Hilal and sport fanaticism
I WAS one of the members of a large group of sports fans in Madinah at a private gathering arranged especially to view the keenly-poised AFC Champions League final match return-leg between the Riyadh-based team Al-Hilal and Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan on Saturday being beamed from Tokyo. The match ended in favor of the Japanese team 1-0, after the teams had drawn 1-1 in the first leg in Riyadh. For the record, the Japanese club won 2-1 on aggregate and lifted the title. As Saudis, the normal thing for us would have been to support Hilal in the hope that the Riyadh club would land an international title on Saturday and add another championship to the record list of the team’s achievements and another feather in Saudi football’s cap. Initially everything was normal as all voiced support...

War on corruption and rule of law!
THE world is following with great interest the consequences of the war on corruption that has been unleashed in Saudi Arabia. However, there seems to be widespread confusion caused by the informal “news” that is being circulated against those who are under arrest and are being investigated. This is contrary to the official approach, which is committed to the public without clarifications or disclosure of names. These momentous events present us a great opportunity to establish the rule of law and build institutions by giving the judiciary a chance to establish a fair and proper system of litigation wherein cases are adjudicated on the basis on their merits not on the popular sentiment. The indicted defendant is not innocent and therefore the accused is innocent until proven guilty which...

What Merkel’s political woes mean for the EU
Want to be pessimistic about Europe? Let me count you the ways. The latest reason for pessimism is Germany, which from being the undisputed leader of Europe has suddenly descended to being the basket case. The latest blow: Angela Merkel’s struggle to keep control of the government after her struggle to cobble together a new ruling coalition collapsed last weekend.Merkel, a leader of apparent modesty and inexhaustible good sense, now must choose between another exhausting round of coalition negotiations, a minority government or fresh elections.Meanwhile, Britain is leaving the European Union, and the vast task of disentangling nearly 45 years of unity at times seems beyond the UK’s weak Conservative government. But the people spoke in a referendum on Brexit, and no one can grab the...

Industry is the key to becoming an advanced country
The nation’s industry faces numerous challenges, the foremost of which is capital flight estimated at SR 2.65 trillion, according to Shoura Council member Dr. Abdullah Al-Harbi. Today, any Arab investment is questionable and will be under suspicion of funding terrorism until proven otherwise. Therefore, there are fears that these funds may be frozen by US and European authorities without any justifiable reason or based on false accusations. Therefore, these funds should return to the Kingdom as soon as possible and should be employed to enhance industry and economic growth.According to economic experts, the only way to encourage investors to return money is to improve investment opportunities. We should not only issue laws encouraging investment, but should also compete with other...

German political limbo threatens European reform push
Half a year ago, the political stars seemed perfectly aligned for a deep reform of the European Union and its euro currency.Emmanuel Macron had won the French presidency on a promise to relaunch Europe. And Angela Merkel, on track to win a fourth term as German chancellor, looked ready to embrace his bold vision, telling an audience in Bavaria that it was time for Europe to take its fate into its own hands.Following the collapse of German coalition talks, however, the prospects for a meaningful leap forward in European cooperation, driven by newly minted governments in Berlin and Paris, look dimmer than ever.“Political uncertainty has crossed the Rhine,” said Jean Pisani-Ferry, an economist and academic who helped write Macron’s election program. “Europe has gotten used to having a...

Iran-backed Houthi missiles
The launching of ballistic missiles on Saudi cities by Houthi militias is not unprecedented, as they did not spare even the holiest and most sacred place on earth, Makkah, from their attacks last June. Although Saudi defence forces have thankfully been able to intercept all the missiles, the latest attempt to target Riyadh on November 4 represents a serious development in the war in Yemen. As the backer and the guarantor of these militias, Iran has crossed every red line in the conflict with Saudi Arabia in particular and with the countries of the region in general.Providing an out-of-state terrorist group with ballistic missiles is a serious issue that is contributing to the continuation of the conflict and hindering a political settlement of the crisis. It is also a serious threat to...

When Aoun ‘hallucinates’, parroting Khamenei
Exactly one year ago, on the 1st of November last year, I wrote an article titled “What will Aoun achieve?” Actually, all the opinions I presented came true, as it was a correct reading of the history of the current Lebanese President Michel Aoun, his "disturbed" approach, personal interests and his old and reawakened dreams!Undoubtedly, Saad Hariri’s resignation from his post as Lebanese Prime Minister will not turn into a big crisis between Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. However, it has become a real crisis for the Iranian influenced and funded camp in Lebanon. At the peak of the pyramid of power, Aoun has been affected by a slight mental derangement that has made him leave aside his presidential affairs and devote his time to firing statements accusing Saudi Arabia of holding...

What follows the rain?
THE last time heavy rain briefly lashed our city, it created enough problems and inconvenience to warrant public complaints being aired on TV and in the press. Days and weeks after that rain, neighborhoods remained flooded with standing pools of water, a breeding ground for a host of pesky creatures whose only aim in life is to infect you with some disease or the other. As I write these words, will this recent rain paralyze major portions of Jeddah and leave thousands stranded giving credibility to charges of corruption against those in the civil sectors and ministries responsible for rainwater and sewage disbursement? If the situation has not improved one bit, what other conclusion is one expected to draw? What is even more painful is that many of the recent road re-surfacing works that...

Pakistanis celebrate Iqbal Day
ALL Pakistanis celebrate Iqbal Day, the day when the renowned Muhammad Iqbal, a Muslim poet, philosopher, politician, statesman, and great economist was born. Known as ‘Poet of Islam’ and ‘Poet of the East,’ Iqbal was born on Nov.9, 1877 in Sialkot. His father Sheikh Noor Muhammad admitted him to the mosque to learn the Noble Qur’an and take religion classes. However, Syed Mir Hassan, a friend of Iqbal’s father, told the father that Muhammad Iqbal was brilliant and should not attend only religion classes at the mosque but should be enrolled in school so that he could attend science classes. Iqbal would have a brilliant and promising future ahead of him, Syed Mir Hassan said to the father.I was invited to attend two seminars in Jeddah to celebrate the birth of this prominent and...

Rohingya genocide and global indifference
More than six million Jews are said to have perished in the organized mass slaughter, perhaps history’s first, in Germany and across Europe under Hitler. Millions more were forced from their homes and lands of their ancestors. Their crime? They simply belonged to a different race and faith and did not fit in the crazy scheme of things of Hitler’s Aryan supremacist fantasies. Just as the Rohginya Muslims do not fit in the yellow, Buddhist paradise of Myanmar today.I often wonder how the world could have just stood around and allowed the Jewish holocaust on its watch. The world, or rather the West, did eventually act to stop Hitler, largely when the German juggernaut threatened its own existence. The influential Jewish lobby also played its role in forcing the US to intervene in Europe,...
