What’s next in Al-Hariri made-in-Iran drama?
A TRAVELER visited a village for the first time and was shocked to witness a weird scene. The villagers were carrying a dead person to his grave, while he was shouting I am alive... I am alive! All he heard before they buried him was: Shut up and go to sleep! The village court has decided that you are dead!I remembered this story as I followed the insistence of some Lebanese that Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri was being held in Saudi Arabia against his will, even though he met with heads of state, foreign ministers, ambassadors of the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and the European Union, the head of Lebanese church, and many others. He also made a trip during his short stay to the United Arab Emirates, had a live interview with a Lebanese channel, made several calls to...

Occupied Lebanon!
THE resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri is a natural reaction of anyone, who has a sense of dignity and self esteem, is forced to accept his continued presence in a team that threatens his ministers with arms and extortion and supports a sectarian system with no purpose other than to destabilize the region and indulges in money laundering, drug trafficking and militia financing.Hezbollah is undeniably and unmistakably a terrorist organization that does not deserve to live in a respectful and honorable manner, and therefore it has no place to continue officially in Lebanese political life even if some Lebanese decide to accept this criminal group and “beautify it” by giving it funny titles such as the resistance movement or the opposition axis. This criminal group is...

Brazil is back on track
Just over 18 months ago, I took office as the President of Brazil with the task of facing up to the most severe economic crisis in the history of Brazil along with its deep social impacts on our people. Faced with this kind of challenge, I have put forward a transformation agenda without recourse to populist measures. The agenda comprises the broadest set of structuring reforms for the past 30 years based upon the pillars of fiscal balance, social responsibility and increase in productivity. The results are already visible. The economic recession in Brazil has been reversed and the Brazilian economy has grown for the last two consecutive quarters. Some analysts have forecast a 1 percent growth in GDP in 2017. Inflation, which was about 10 percent in May 2016, stands below the inflation...

The truth behind the US show of force in Asia
As President Donald Trump toured Asia, three US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier battle groups were exercising together in the Pacific. It’s an awesome display of US military power and reach, a reminder of Washington’s unparalleled ability to project global force. At the same time, however, it’s also a sign of how stretched those forces have become.Getting three carriers to the Pacific has been an intrinsic part of Washington’s strategy to intimidate North Korea. But to do so required pulling forces from a host of other potential conflict areas, including the Gulf. The ever-increasing demand for military resources in a growing number of places is causing increased concern in the US military. In June, a report by the US Army War College described America’s military clout as...

Will expat dependents fees be postponed?
In an interview with Al-Arabiya TV Channel, which was published by Okaz newspaper, Finance Minister Muhammad Al-Jadaan stressed that government senior specialists and economic experts have agreed that it was possible to extend the period of some reforms by up to 3, 4 or 5 years, if needed, whether such reforms are related to energy prices or something else. The government will announce the types of reforms whose period will be extended.Al-Jadaan also said that instead of implementing 50 to 100 percent of the reforms within a certain period of time, it was possible to postpone the implementation for up to a year or two years, especially in light of the Kingdom’s borrowing capacity. It is not important to achieve fiscal balance by 2019 or 2020 as much as it is important to achieve...

The public has spoken
The recent arrests and the freezing of assets of princes, businessmen and public servants have been met with robust approval by the public. With its swift and decisive actions, the newly formed anti-government commission has declared its intentions publicly and has avowed to continue targeting more corrupt people by casting a much wider net.It should be noted that corruption has been one of the elements that served as a springboard to the Arab Spring. And we have not been immune to it. Perhaps, the most public example was the aftermath of the Jeddah rains in 2009 in which 130 people died in the resulting floods. It was determined that bribery played a major part as city officials had granted housing permits illegally on city land not zoned as residential areas. According to an independent...

Lebanon’s choice: Havana or Honolulu?
IN international relations, at some point, some conjunction, a nation must choose which way to go. There is a limit to how much you could play others for time, hoping that you may, somehow, win them all.Neutrality is a solution when you can’t decide. And Lebanon chose that option, but unfortunately couldn’t stick to it. A government influenced by one party which is totally owned by a foreign power, couldn’t be neutral. On the other hand, there is also a limit to how far other nations can understand and appreciate, wait and tolerate such submission to an enemy state. Instead of getting better, it gets worse. Lebanon is being used as a base for terrorist activities and aggression against other states. Under the legal cover of a normal, democratic, functioning government, decisions are...

Can Rahul Rescue the Congress?
What’s Rahul Gandhi having these days for breakfast? The scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty has been on a roll having discovered, in the words of that whacky hero in movie, Austin Powers, his ‘mojo’. His stinging attacks on Narendra Modi over issues like the catastrophic demonetization and the stillborn GST (goods and services tax) have the BJP running for cover.Rahul Gandhi’s performance in Modi’s home turf Gujarat has been simply breathtaking, attracting huge crowds for a change. He has been mobbed wherever he goes in the poll-bound state, with the public eagerly lapping up his clever one-liners and no-holds-barred attacks on the government’s disastrous performance on various fronts. It may not amount to much but is certainly a sign of shifting popular mood that for the...

Enemies of the environment
RECENTLY, an environmental campaign was started by a Green group the Association of Sudair that called on people to start and sustain a drive to plant more than 100,000 trees in the next ten years. About 250 people, mostly young people in addition to some elderly, participated in this green drive and managed to plant more than 6,000 trees. The campaign was well organized and systematic. The volunteers, dressed in uniforms, were given free saplings and were then asked to plant it in a specified place. Many other organizations too participated in this green drive by providing the organizers with these plants. The organizers’ aim was to increase the green space by selecting and planting types of trees that can survive in a harsh environment that suffers from lack of water.Another Green...
