Yemen: End of marriage of convenience!
AS we bless and support the uprising of the General People’s Congress party and its leader, former Yemeni President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, against their former allies, the Houthis, we should not forget the bizarre (but educating) story that led to this unholy marriage between two opposing parties. In political relations, as in human, there is always the so-called “intersection of interests” that transcends differences, however deep and strong, to unite forces toward similar goals and to achieve certain interests. This intersection is like a marriage of convenience that lasts until the mutual aims are achieved. Then, each party returns to its original project, private agenda and permanent interests.British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, summed up this principle when he declared that...

Hadiya and the bogey of 'love jihad'
Love conquers all. Hadiya is an inspiring example of what love, in this case divine love, can accomplish pitted against greatest of odds. The frail young woman, a Hindu student from Kerala who embraced Islam while studying medicine in Tamil Nadu, has demonstrated extraordinary courage of conviction. She has been at the heart of a major political storm roiling India right now and has paid a tremendous price for remaining steadfast in her new faith.Hadiya, formerly Akhila Asokan, has incurred the wrath of her family, including her typically male chauvinist father who insists he cannot accept a “terrorist” in his family and has gone to absurd lengths to force his 25-year-old daughter to leave her new faith and her Muslim husband. She has faced a hostile judiciary who instead of giving her...

Shame and defame
I RECENTLY came across a video clip of what appears to be a Saudi man questioning a security guard working at a hospital. The video clip reveals the man excited, angry and shouting at the guard, and even claiming that ‘he was not Saudi and that he was an Arab expat from Yemen impersonating as a Saudi man.’The agitated man in the video clearly accuses the security guard of faking his identity while taking on the Saudi identity. The helpless security guard is seen replying respectfully that ‘he is from a tribe in the south within the Saudi border, with a special case.’ He also said that his paperwork for citizenship was still under process. Not only that, the Saudi man kept accusing the security guard of being a Yemeni hiding under the garb of Saudi nationality. At one point he even...

Goodbye Lebanon we knew!
IN full public glare Saad Hariri, accompanied by his wife and son, visited Paris and met with the French president at the Elysee Palace. With his appearance and participation during the Independence Day celebrations in Beirut, Hariri exposed a web of lies and rumors woven around him by the terrorist organization Hezbollah.Presently, the Saudi-Lebanese relations are at an unprecedented crossroads. This crisis has revealed the extent of hatred and lies against Saudi Arabia and its symbols is being spread by a lot of Lebanese politicians and their flock.Irrespective of the situation, Lebanon has changed a great deal and now it needs to answer some pertinent questions, portraying a true picture of its identity and the mission. The country has been promoting itself as a beacon of science,...

Will Trump’s anti-Muslim tweets destroy US-UK special relations?
BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May’s temptation must have been to counterpunch after receiving Donald Trump’s advice to concentrate her mind on the militant threat to Britain rather than reacting to his retweeting of British far-right anti-Islam videos. “@theresamay, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom,” the US president tweeted to his 40 million-plus followers. “We are doing just fine.”“Two of America’s worst mass shootings (Las Vegas concert/Texas church) have happened on your watch,” she might have tweeted back. “Shouldn’t POTUS focus on gun laws?” She didn’t do that, of course. Her actual response was brusque. “It is wrong for the president to have done this,” she concluded...

Delhi can learn from other megacities to clear its toxic smog
Delhi must adopt anti-pollution steps taken by other megacities like Beijing and Mexico City if the Indian metropolis is to get serious about tackling its annual smog crisis, experts say.A toxic cloud covered India’s capital, New Delhi, and surrounding areas this month, causing respiratory problems among residents and leading to school closures, flight cancellations and the declaration of a public health emergency. The causes of the problem include the poor quality of diesel used to generate electricity and to power the vehicles clogging the streets, dust and smoke thrown out by a thriving construction industry, and biomass and kerosene used by the poor for heating and cooking.Stubble-burning on farmland around the city, described by local officials this month as a “gas chamber”, is...

What a waste of words
The recent rains in Jeddah once again exposed the depth of inefficiency that plagues our civil sectors. Following a brief rain, the lack of a proper drainage system caused severe flooding in neighborhoods and led to the reported death of three individuals.Once again, the residents of the city vented their anger and frustration against this latest affront. Coupled with the ongoing high-profile investigation that has led to the arrest of several princes, leading businessmen and public servants, the public is demanding more action and wants to know how the billions of government-allocated funds for the city’s infrastructure have been spent.Exactly 10 years ago, Jeddah Municipality held a much-touted event unveiling their “Jeddah 1450” plan. According to the vice mayor for planning and...

Sheikh Ibrahim Bin Musalam: May he rest in peace
Sheikh Ibrahim Bin Ali Bin Musalam, a dedicated dawah activist in Al-Baha, recently passed away at the age of 90. He spent his life pursuing religious education and promoting dawah activities diligently and perseveringly. He lived on a monthly salary from the Shariah Institute after graduating from the School of Shariah in which he enrolled when he was 40 years old.Sheikh Ibrahim was born in a small village in Baljurashi Governorate, Al-Baha Region and spent his childhood in Wadi Al-Mada village whose people were illiterate because there were no teachers or mosques in the village at that time. Sheikh Ibrahim moved to Jeddah and worked for a small hotel. He joined the memorization sessions of the Holy Qur’an run by Sheikh Ahmed Barzan who also taught students how to read and write. He...

Arab Spring in new Saudi Arabia!
THE Lebanese journalist exclaimed: “You have occupied the media world, Saudis!” Most headlines in newspapers, TV channels and radio stations, beside the social media, have been allocated to you for two years now. Take, for example, these three mega issues raised in one day: The war on corruption, the Iranian missile on Riyadh, and the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s resignation, being announced in Saudi Arabia!”“I have postponed my vacation, repeatedly, because of you guys! Finally I am allowed to take it next week. Could you please take some rest and let me have my much-awaited and needed break,” she added, laughing. She called again, less than 48 hours later, to ask for my comments on Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman’s interview with The New York Times! I joked: It...

Padmavati: Time for silent majority to speak
Let us get this straight. All this mayhem over ‘Padmavati’ roiling India is not really about the imagined romantic encounter between a Hindu queen and a Muslim emperor, as Hindutva hotheads insist. Except for the epic penned by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, which celebrates love between Alauddin Khilji and Padmini or Padmavati, there are no credible historical accounts to suggest such romantic interest ever existed or evolved. Indeed, as my friend Amaresh Misra and other distinguished historians insist, there is no evidence to suggest Padmavati even existed! Legendarily beautiful as she was, she existed in the imagination of Avadhi poet Jayasi.Clearly, the notion of unrequited love between a Rajput princess and the reigning Muslim emperor of Hindustan was too good as a story to resist for the...
