When media is used as a weapon against us
WHILE I was recently browsing the Internet, I came across an article written by Saudi columnist Muhammad Al-Sulami from ‘An7a’ news website titled ‘A letter to the Information Minister’. It perked my interest in what he wanted to say, and I took time out to read it.In his letter, he questioned the true message of our media production, which influences and shapes the image of persons and personalities in the minds of the receivers. He asked, “Why are we engraving the image of a police officer, who is protecting and serving us, in the minds of the future generation, as a backward, illiterate person who was born in the past century, even if the production was a comedy?”He said that police officers are smart and intelligent and because of these acumen along with the inherent...

An occupier against an occupier in Syria!
TO know the magnitude of the tragedy caused by Bashar Assad’s regime to his country, one must look carefully at the recent confrontations that took place between the Iranian and Israel forces on the Syrian territory.Israel occupies the Syrian Golan Heights and uses it to launch rockets into the Syrian territory. On the other hand, there is an unreasonable presence of the Iranian army occupying the entire Syrian territory. Iran has more than ten military bases and having more than ten thousand fighters in addition to thousands of other mercenaries and militias affiliated to sectarian Hezbollah, the same regime that boasted about “occupying” Damascus as well as Baghdad, Beirut and Sanaa. It is painful and sad to see an “occupier” fighting another “occupier” from and on the...

The United States: A premier destination for investment
As the Chargé d’Affaires at the US embassy to Saudi Arabia, I invite Saudi business leaders and institutional investors to participate in this year’s SelectUSA Summit, to be held in Washington, DC June 20 – 22. The United States is the world’s premier destination for foreign direct investment. The SelectUSA investment forum not only unlocks attractive opportunities for individual and institutional investors, it also helps strengthen and deepen the enduring economic ties between the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These ties enable mutually beneficial investment and growth to flourish across education, healthcare, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, entertainment, agriculture, and many other sectors.Investors today have options and seek rewarding and...

Canadian PM calls for inquiry into Gaza deaths
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hurriedly called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after the Canadian prime minister asked for an impartial investigation into the shootings by Israeli forces that killed more than 100 Palestinians and wounded more than 12,000 people, including a Canadian doctor, who said he was deliberately targeted. The Israeli lobby, enthusiastic to defend the indefensible when it comes to Israel, swung into action to put the heat on Prime Minister Trudeau to back down and back Israel even when its government defies international law, builds illegal settlements on occupied land, blockades Gaza, attacks neighbors and oppresses the people of the West Bank. The prime minister is being supported by Canadians who hold the view that both Israelis and Palestinians have a...

How do we welcome Ramadan?
In a hadith (saying of the Prophet), Al-Tirmidhi reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘On the first night of the month of Ramadan, the devils are chained, the jinn are restrained, and the gates of Hellfire are closed and none of its gates are opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and none of its gates are closed. A caller announces: O seeker of good, come near! O seeker of evil, stop short! Allah will save them from the Hellfire and that is during every night of Ramadan.’”Do Muslims today adhere to the approach promulgated by the Prophet (pbuh) regarding the fasting month? Do they embrace the true spirit of fasting and apply the wisdom for which fasting was made obligatory? It is true that we abstain from eating and drinking during the daytime in Ramadan,...

Trust us, we’re doctors.
Black plumes of smoke wind upwards in the sky over Myanmar. Lines of people stretch as far as the eye can see; some carry household items like pots or plastic bags, most have nothing. These people are bound for a refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. A million people live there now. It’s muddy, hilly and densely populated.I ask you now to take a moment to see this crisis from a medical perspective. To see vulnerable human beings who are cornered, in fear and in need of help.We are Doctors Without Borders; a medical organization, not a human rights group. This distinction may seem obvious, but I reiterate it often, to highlight the fact that our primary concern is our patients and their treatment. This is not to say that we don’t speak out about human rights abuses when we witness...

In Ramadan, let us focus on doing what is right
The holy month of Ramadan is well into its first week. It will continue for the next three weeks and Muslims around the globe will engage in acts to seek mercy, forgiveness and redemption from eternal damnation. But in the days and weeks leading to this month, there were a number of activities that were tragic to witness, especially in the occupied territories of Palestine as peaceful protesters were picked off by Israeli snipers and killed. There were also further reports of brutalities in Kashmir, Myanmar, Syria and elsewhere. It was during Ramadan that the Holy Qur’an — the holy book of Islam — was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Self-purification through fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a month of introspection, a month of mercy, patience and...

Social responsibility — who’s responsible?
I WAS invited to a seminar about social responsibility in Saudi Arabia, sponsored by a major Saudi bank. In attendance, there were a number of business editors in Saudi media. The program started with a presentation of social projects and initiatives sponsored by the bank. They included training, education and jobs for orphans and girls, in addition to support for disabled children.During the questions and answers time, journalists were demanding more of banks —much more! They regarded the said programs as “too little, too late.” Some went even further calling for the government to tax banks and companies for charity works. The bank’s representatives were in the defensive mode, showing how much they spend for these projects (hundred of millions), the benefits they achieve for the...

Slap of the century
SINCE his days as a presidential candidate, he has repeatedly called Iran’s nuclear deal the worst agreement the United States has ever made in its history and if he becomes president, it will not be allowed to continue. This was Donald Trump’s statement as a candidate, and after he became the president, he repeated it. He explained the reasons for his dissatisfaction with the agreement. He termed the deal as unfair as it allowed Iran to earmark huge sums of money, which runs into millions of US dollars, to support and spread terrorism in the region — directly or through terrorist factions and militias such as Hezbollah, the Houthis and others — and thus continuing to be a supportive force for terrorism.Maintaining his open, frank and unambiguous position, Donald Trump scrapped the...

‘The Year of Hunger’ — food for thought
NEARLY two weeks ago, the anniversary of the tragic memory of what Najd people called at that time ‘the Year of Hunger’ was remembered with solemnity. It was described as the worst famine ever to hit the area, nearly wiping out the entire population of the Najd area. This was the year when people were forced to eat dead animals and lived on the protein got from cooking animal skin, which is generally discarded or used for tannery. The skin had to be cooked for a long period to make it tender and edible.I had heard vaguely about ‘the Year of Hunger’ but did not make an effort to delve into its details or really learn more about it. The details of that era, once I learned about it, proved to be shocking and is sure to make one cry at the hardship and tragedy wreaked by the drought....
