The month of peace, tolerance and civilization building
Terrorist groups have accustomed us to killing and bombing in the holy month of Ramadan. As soon as the holy month arrived, Daesh (the self-proclaimed IS) was quick to remind us of its despicable atrocities by the suicide bombing of all the members of three families, young and old, in churches in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia. We have not forgotten the extent of Daesh’s madness when it attempted to target the Great Mosque of Makkah in Ramadan 2017, and its failed attempt to target fasting Muslims in the Haram Al-Madinah in Ramadan in 2016. Muslims have witnessed bloody Ramadans where unspeakable acts of aggression have been perpetrated by Daesh in markets and mosques to implement Baghdadi’s message that there is, “No work in this holy month better than Jihad”.The question we pose...

There is another Holocaust in the making
Every time I hear that leaders around the world gather at monuments to solemnly remember the Holocaust of the previous century, I want to scream about another Holocaust that has been going on before our eyes for the past 65 years and more. This one is orchestrated by none other than the descendants of the first Holocaust, who today form the Israeli government. Israeli occupation forces have been systematically murdering and maiming the innocent in Palestine for over seven decades now.The Free World could be forgiven during World War II for the crimes Hitler committed against various groups. News did not travel very fast in those days, and neither were there instantaneous broadcasts of live pictures and film illustrating the viciousness of the Nazi occupation. However, today we should not...

Pakistanis celebrate Youm-e-Takbir
The Pakistan Repatriation Council (PRC) recently organized a symposium in Jeddah titled “Nuclear technology – our need and obligation” to mark the 20th anniversary of Pakistan’s detonation of its first nuclear bomb. This day is known as Youm-e-Takbir (Day of Greatness) when the country entered the nuclear club in 1998.There had been pressure from Western powers against detonating nuclear devices but the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif defied this pressure by stating that it was a matter of life and death for the nation, and that it was a non-negotiable issue as far as Pakistan was concerned.Prominent leaders of the Pakistani community in Jeddah attended the symposium, which began with the recitation of a few verses from the Holy Qur’an. Hamid Islam, deputy convener of PRC,...

New ministers — new state and market partnership!
THE stock market was up 5 percent in response to the new royal decrees. They include appointments at the ministerial level, as well as deputy ministers, and the creation of royal protectorates in most of the upper half of the country. That’s in addition to other natural parks that were protected by prior decrees, especially in the southern part of the country. It is hard to tell what has more to do with the upsurge of the share market. However, most analysts seem to agree that it was the appointment of technocrats from the private sector. Six ministerial posts went to highly trained professionals from the national oil company, ARAMCO. They come with impressive list of certificates, experiences and achievements, to join other successful leaders from the same company, like Minister of...

Emirates and the beautiful decision!
COMPETITION in the world of economy requires serious players to review their plans and change their strategies immediately. There comes the role of skilled and experienced management who reads the directions of the changing wind and thus manages the movement of the boat and puts it in the safe direction to gain ground. This is what the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) did recently. It issued a historic resolution that offers great facilities for talented and investors, including raising the percentage of foreign ownership of companies to 100 percent by the end of the current year and granting residency visas to investors. This is an open and practical acknowledgment that the rules of the game are changing because strong and serious global competition imposes itself and creates a...

‘This Saudi employee is absent from work’
THE above headline is not derived from my opinion, but it is related to an incident that took place at a sportswear shop last week. This incident sparked a heated debate in social media and instigated a campaign against expat workers in managerial positions. What triggered this sea of words? It all started with a sign that was pasted on a desk that said, “This Saudi cashier is absent from work”. This sparked great anger and people called on the company to hold this expat manager accountable and accused him of racism. In the meantime, the sportswear shop issued a statement saying that this was an isolated incident and promised to investigate the incident to the full and to apply severe punishment.I agree with the company’s statement that this incident is isolated and the work of one...

Protests in Iran and the erosion of the brinkmanship policy
Public protests have continued to take place in various cities throughout Iran since January. The main focus has been on the failure of President Hassan Rouhani’s government to revive Iran’s struggling economy, address high unemployment and inflation and combat alleged corruption. However, these soon turned into radical political protests calling for the overthrow of the regime that is spending huge amounts of money on conflicts elsewhere in the Middle East while people are suffering at home. The aim of this high expenditure appears to be the destabilization of the region in order to extend the influence of the Iranian regime.Furthermore, the United States withdrew earlier in May from the nuclear deal and imposed new economic sanctions on Iranian entities, which involves the exit of...

Shoura Council on the right track
It was refreshing to read that finally the anti -harassment law that had been languishing in the Shoura Council for a considerable period of time mustered enough positive votes to be approved and be sent to the Council of Ministers for ratification. The full details will be released soon.Harassment is a social disease. Simply defined, it is the act of systematic, persistent and unwanted actions by an individual or a group against another. The types of such vile acts are not simply confined to sexual harassment. It also includes racial prejudice, personal malice, an attempt to force someone to quit a job, apply illegal pressure to collect a bill, or merely gain sadistic pleasure from making someone fearful or anxious. In many countries, such activities may be the basis for a lawsuit if they...

Memories of observing Ramadan abroad
Saudis are accustomed to receiving Ramadan in a special way that is not seen elsewhere in the Muslim world. In Ramadan, we Saudis virtually turn the nighttime into daytime and vice versa at least in major cities. In the past in the countryside, Ramadan was not received in the same way as it was in cities. But after electricity came to small villages, people in those regions, especially youngsters, started celebrating Ramadan just those living in urban areas. When I asked my non-Saudi friends about the Ramadan switchover, most of them said that they were content with the Saudi style of celebrating the holy month. At the same time, others said that they had some reservations about the way that Saudis observed Ramadan.Going down memory lane, I recall my Ramadan experience as a diplomat in...

Volunteering — the art of giving!
My wife and I arrived late — ten minutes before the Maghreb prayer in the Prophet Mosque, in Madinah. Failing to find an empty space inside (it was a crowded Ramadan night), we stood waiting and looking for a suitable space at the grounds outside the Holy Mosque. Soon enough, a local came to us with a complete solution. He provided mats to sit and pray on. For our breakfasting, he offered dates, yogurt and bread, as well as, cold water, juice fruits and sweets. Others came with other kinds of homemade drinks and food. We had to say “no thanks” at the end, and pass some to neighbors — who exchanged their food, too, with us and others! After the call for prayer, “adhan,” we feasted on the provided “iftar” and drank the coffee and tea other providers gave us. Within minutes,...
