Is Saudi Arabia going to seek its rights?
OkazFINALLY the Washington Post revealed the mystery behind a sponsored campaign against the Kingdom through a series of articles written by the late Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi and its direct connection with Qatar Foundation International, which was supervised by Maggie Mitchell, a political, media and intelligence agent. It was also revealed that she was directly connected to that institution. The Washington Post was behind the fall of Richard Nixon from the US presidency after the Watergate scandal. It is hard to believe that this giant media institution was misused for more than a year without the management knowing the background of Khashoggi's articles, their main objectives and who was behind them.Of course, they knew all these but they chose to reveal the details after...

My predictions for 2019
OkazARAB satellite channels, especially the Lebanese ones, hosted a large number of astrologers and soothsayers who usually appear around this time every year to sell their illusions. Aside from targeting simple people, these clairvoyants flatter politicians with sweet predictions while they strike fear in the hearts of celebrities with premonitions of imminent disaster. They throw baits to the famous personalities who get in touch with them to obtain further information about their bright or dark future. This way, these people can easily extort money from the famous and powerful.I must admit that these fortune tellers are extremely smart and they have good talent in analyzing data and drawing conclusions. This makes their predictions come true oftentimes. Simple people who believe in the...

A house in two days
WE all have seen the Ministry of Housing build a house, to be specific putting together the pieces of a house, in two days. This was a nice effort but at the same time it cannot be described as an achievement. I am not trying to undermine the efforts of the Ministry of Housing, but I cannot call it an achievement because the construction method was being used for many years elsewhere. Many of the government buildings were built that way many decades ago.It is not an achievement for another reason. Let us assume that the ministry was the one to invent this type of construction on Planet Earth but the problem of people searching for houses cropped up in Saudi Arabia not because of the time required for constructing one. If it were so, then I believe people would accept the idea of building a...

New rumors about expat fees
Al-MadinaAS part of efforts to achieve financial balance, the Kingdom in the middle of 2017 started levying fees on expatriate employees and their family members living in the country. The expat fee was aimed at encouraging the Saudization of jobs and to close the wide gap between the costs of employing Saudis and expats in the private sector. This initiative was also meant to attract and retain skilled foreign labor with high qualifications, especially as 84 percent of the expat workers in the Kingdom did not have even a high school education. The move also aimed at getting a clear of picture of the total expatriate population and the exact number of the foreign workers in the country. It was also meant to support the government financially because the new fee was expected to generate...

Who is Lindsey Graham?
Al-MadinaWE cherish the US as a very close ally and we respect its citizens. Sadly, there are some members in the US Congress who exaggerate in a very bad way and uleash attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These people claim to be committed to safeguarding human rights but at the same time they spare Israel even of the mildest criticism when the rights of the Palestinian people are blatantly infringed upon in their occupied homeland. Prominent among such people is the US Senator Lindsey Graham, who is one of the biggest supporters of Israel, a fact that he does not hide at all.Graham staunchly supported Israeli positions that deprived the Palestinians of their basic human rights.I will cite some of Graham's stands, as obtained from American and Israeli sources. I believe it is...

Marriage licenses needed
Al-Madina newspaperACCORDING to its monthly report, the Ministry of Justice in the month of Safar recorded 10,593 marriage contracts all over the Kingdom while 4,776 divorce certificates were issued in the country over the same month.About 46 percent of these cases were in different areas in Makkah and Riyadh provinces. The data related to divorce made available by the ministry in periodic statistics indicates that it is on the rise year after year. The rate of divorce reached 46 percent of the total number of marriages. This means that half of the marriages are likely to end up in failure. The statistics also showed that 60 percent of marriages failed in the first year itself. The aftermath of divorce is painful, both at the individual and national level. Divorce can lead to an increase in...

Rationalize spending
Al-Madina newspaperBUSINESSMEN who make money by selling products and services on special occasions are the most rich and the ones who are able to smartly rip people's pockets and eat into their savings. Those who deal in weapons on the black market are the perhaps the most dangerous of businessmen because they incite conflicts around the world and then sell weapons to the antagonists. Others are businessmen who monopolize the sale of basic products such as food, medicines and clothes. The moment they see trouble on the horizon or political instability, they empty the shelves of products and hoard them in their warehouses, only to release them back to the market at a very high price. Then there is this type of businessmen who are called seasonal vendors. They sell their unsold products...

Did the Saudis win or lose in Yemen?
Okaz newspaperTHE Yemen war will mark its fourth anniversary in March. For those who need to remember, the Yemeni crisis started when the Houthi militia moved to seize weapons, missiles and airplanes after the coup to capture the capital city of Sanaa. This was something unprecedented. No country in the world will allow a militia to take over power. This militia was undisciplined, did not respect the law and did not recognize the conventions of war.In addition, the militia was controlled by regional powers with huge military capabilities to inflict serious damage. This was exactly what happened when they launched more than 100 ballistic missiles targeting Saudi cities. At the beginning of the war, the battle was limited to the Saudi border regions. Bombshells were dropped on heavily...

The embarrassing sign at our gas stations
Al-JazirahPAY in advance. This is the sign that welcomes motorists at some of our gas stations these days.No doubt, this is the worst sign that anyone might come across at gas stations anywhere. It gives a bad impression of the social behavior of our drivers.A foreign visitor to our country will be surprised by this sign and may not understand the reasons why it was put up on the walls of our gas stations. In the past, gas station workers used to place rocks near the pumps to throw at motorists who speed off without paying after refueling. Now we have these signs displayed at gas stations.I assume that this is a result of teenage behavior. Some of them fill up their cars and then escape without paying. This type of behavior is happening almost in all societies. There are ways to deal with...

An open dialogue with Prince Abdullah Bin Bandar
OkazTHE Deputy Emir of Makkah, Prince Abdullah Bin Bandar, was a guest at a special gathering with a number of opinion writers in Jeddah recently. He had a frank and candid talk with the opinion writers, who all had one common goal, which was to serve the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and participate in its development.Prince Abdullah is a young prince who emerged as a prominent public figure in a short period of time. The youth are seen as the bridge that will carry the country to the next stage where we will achieve the vision of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. I was keen on meeting with the prince to get an overview of the future based on his vision.I asked him where he would see the Kingdom in 10 years. He said he was optimistic for many reasons.Prince Abdullah’s optimism for a bright...
