On girls escaping to the unknown
Al-WatanI AM closely following these days the divergent opinions in our society about girls escaping from their homes with each group sticking to their own points of view. One of these groups put the blame squarely on the media and purported instigators, saying the girls who escape from their families are victims of media hype.Others put the blame on the severe restrictions imposed on women in the country and the customs and traditions prevailing in Saudi society as well as certain regulations that curtail their freedom.Social media influencers, each one of them with his or her large following, were also divided over the issue. Some of them put the blame on the girls themselves for escaping and question their morality without paying any attention to the dignity of the individual. They also...

Collecting millions to spare a murderer
Al-YaumIT starts with a quarrel over parking space, running red light, or an altercation of over any minor issue. Then it escalates into a fight and often reaches a level where one of the parties is murdered and sent to prison. He regrets his mistake and repents, is pardoned and his family calls for help to pay the blood money to spare him from execution.Sadly, this is a scenario that repeats in many parts of the Kingdom. The problem is that some members in society, often family elders, are indirectly helping this phenomenon to reach a dead end without any solution. They teach their sons to take their rights by force, and ask them not be weak and not to leave their cousins alone in a fight. They even relate sarcastic tales about people who saw their cousins in a problem or in a fight and...

From Rahaf to the grasshoppers
Al-MadinaTHE world media, human rights organizations and the United Nations were busy the past week with the case of Rahaf Al-Qunun, the Saudi Arabian girl who fled her family in Kuwait and escaped first to Thailand and then to Canada. From her accent, it looks like her family had given her a good education. However, the same world media and the rights groups did not pay any attention to the battered girls who escape from their poor families all over the world on a daily basis.Girls escaping from their homes is not a strange phenomenon in Arab societies nor rare at an international level. This happens even in very open societies for many reasons. Some girls escape because of violence, harassment, drugs and relationships. Others escape because of the family's poor financial...

What is behind the Saudi teen’s escape?
OkazIS there is any foreign conspiracy behind the Saudi teenager's escape or was it purely a family matter? To answer this question, I will have to write two articles discussing all aspects of the case. Therefore, I will consider this article to be the first part of the series.First, what happened with Rahaf Alqunun? Why did this girl escape from her secure family environment and threw herself into the unknown? Can anyone talk with this girl to find out what really happened? At the same, can anyone engage in a dialogue with her family members, who have been silent on the matter till now? The family, however, has the right to voice their side of the story.Rahaf chose her fate. Escaping to an unknown country, which is strange to her cultural environment, is an unsafe path for a girl of...

The Iranian agents at Yemen talks
Al-MadinaIT seems as if the East and West alike do not want a solution to the Yemen crisis and instead they want to prolong the war so they can exploit more of our natural resources and hinder our developmental leap. They want to see us busy in wars and conflicts so they could loot the last of our riches. Is it plausible that the United Nations deals with a gang of Houthi outlaws who overthrew the legitimate government in Sanaa as if they are representatives of the Yemeni people and provide them with a private jet to travel to Geneva or Stockholm and luxurious resorts to stay? They are just a bunch of lawless gangsters in our Arab land, and are managed and controlled by Iran. Is it possible that the United Nations, when the Yemeni national army was closing in on Al-Hodeida to liberate it,...

The plight of our retirees
Al-MadinaIN the house of every retiree in Saudi Arabia, there can be a number of jobless males and females. In addition to their daily expenses amid the ever-rising cost of living, this retiree has to repay his loans and installments, and foot the many utility bills. The more the retiree grow old, the more his need for medical attention and treatment. The retiree will have to visit hospital back and forth. All this happens when the monthly pension of the retiree does not increase even by a single halala. The retiree is forced to live accepting this harsh reality. The retired person who loved his country so much, remained loyal to the rulers and worked hard every day serving the nation in his heyday, does not deserve to suffer like this following retirement. The retirees contributed to our...

Expat feelings toward Saudization
Al-JazirahI AM surprised by people who ask whether the Saudis have the necessary experience to work in retail shops selling medical equipment, construction materials and car spare parts, which are some of the sectors that have been Saudized starting last week. Before giving my response to this question, I ask with all due respect to everyone, did any of the expats who left the market now have any experience when they started work in these shops. The answer is a big no.Then why do we doubt the abilities of the youth of our country to adapt and learn the essentials of the job after joining the work? We allowed the expats to work without any previous experience in many fields. In the past five months, sales jobs in 12 sectors were Saudized and the last ones were sweet shops and carpet...

War on Hezbollah is near
OkazALL of a sudden Hassan Nasrallah appeared on Al-Manar TV, which is owned by Hezbollah, wearing his overcoat and, in a shaking voice, he called for help from Saudi Arabia, specifically from King Abdullah, saying, “Had I known about the repercussions of what happened, we would not have carried out the operation.”Before that Nasrallah appeared bragging about his daring operation of July 2006, in which they breached the Lebanese-Israeli border, kidnapped soldiers and killed some of them, while the remains of one of the were held for ransom. Is Nasrallah going to appear on the Hezbollah TV again calling for help to find an escape route? After a week of heavy air strikes by Israeli warplanes on every civilian and military target from Beirut to the country’s southern border and Israeli...

Invading a morgue?
OkazTHINKING of the video clip showing a group of men sneaking into the medical college morgue at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah makes me sick. I forced myself to watch the video on my mobile phone so that I could write about it.The video showed five men who went inside the morgue walking around human bodies and touching amputated parts. They outdid British director Alfred Hitchcock, the king of horror movies. The difference here is, instead of faking the scene for horror, the whole picture was real. Instead of using sound effect for horror, the scary laughter of the men was heard in the background.I will understand when a person jumps over stadium walls to a football field to watch a match of his favorite team. I will understand when people push through the lines trying to buy tickets...

Thank God, I am not an official
MakkahI HAVE to admit that I was quite disappointed when I did not see my name among the people who were recently appointed to various positions by the government in a recent decision. After a while, I calmed down and started to think about the matter further. Then I realized that I am very bad in managing my own home and my public relations with neighbors and people I meet in grocery stores and restaurants are minimal. The responsibility of a public office is much more difficult and complicated than managing the affairs of my children, which I failed to do properly.Complacency gives comfort. I know that the government is aware of who is who and how to appoint people in different positions. I was happy that I was not required to take up any government positions because it involves great...
