RIYADH — Syria has officially recognized the Republic of Kosovo’s independence, marking a historic diplomatic breakthrough achieved during talks held in Riyadh with the support of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kosovo welcomed the recognition by the Syrian Arab Republic and expressed gratitude to President Ahmed Al-Sharaa for his “leadership and support for the people of Kosovo.”
“This is a decision of historic significance between the two states, based on mutual respect for the long struggle for freedom, mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and commitment to bilateral cooperation,” the statement said.
Kosovo’s government also extended deep appreciation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whose leadership and guidance were described as instrumental in achieving what it called a “historic result” during the trilateral meeting in in Riyadh.
“The people of Kosovo and the people of Syria have sacrificed for too long to achieve their freedom,” the statement continued. “It is in recognition of that suffering and sacrifice and with the highest commitment to supporting each other internationally and through bilateral relations that we achieve this agreement today.”
The announcement paves the way for the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between Pristina and Damascus — a step seen as part of Saudi Arabia’s growing role in fostering reconciliation and mediation efforts across the region.
