LONDON — England manager Gareth Southgate has resigned following their defeat against Spain in the Euro 2024 final, confirmed by the English Football Association on Tuesday.

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager," Southgate said in a statement.

On Sunday, Spain defeated England 2-1 to claim the UEFA EURO 2024 title at Berlin's Olympiastadion.

Southgate, who joined England in 2011, guided the Three Lions to the Euro 2020 final, where they were defeated by Italy, and to the 2018 World Cup semifinals, where they were beaten by Croatia.

During his playing career, the 53-year-old represented Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough. — Agencies
