Eurozone inflation climbed to new record high of 10.7% in October
BRUSSELS — Inflation in the eurozone is expected to have reached a new record high of 10.7% in October. If confirmed later in November by Eurostat, the bloc's official statistics agency, this would be the first inflation reading crossing the 10% threshold. The increase was fueled by energy prices, which Eurostat estimates were 41.9% higher than in the same month last year. Prices for food, alcohol and tobacco are meanwhile believed to have risen by 13.1% year-on-year.Inflation was at 9.9% in September.Baltic countries remain the most deeply affected with the annual inflation remaining above the 20% mark. Estonia leads the pack with a 22.4% estimate. That's largely because they are particularly vulnerable to fluctuation in energy markets.According to Eurostat, the price of natural...

Putin hosts leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan for talks in Sochi
SOCHI — Russian President Vladimir Putin is hosting the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to help broker an agreement after recent violent armed clashes.Putin’s talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will be held at the Russian leader’s Black Sea residence in Sochi on Monday. The negotiations reflect an attempt by the Kremlin to shore up its influence in the region.Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-old conflict over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh.The enclave is part of Azerbaijan but had been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces since a separatist war ended in 1994.During a six-week war in 2020, Azerbaijan reclaimed parts of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories.More than 6,500 people died in the...

Black Sea grain exports blocked as West slams Russia for breaking deal
KIEV/ MOSCOW — The transport of Ukrainian grain was blocked in the Black Sea on Sunday after Russia suspended the export agreement, which is vital for global food supplies, a decision blasted by Kiev, Washington and the EU.Moscow said the decision was taken after a drone attack on the ships in Crimea, but Ukraine denounced it as a “false pretext” and called for pressure to be brought to bear to ensure that Russia “recommits to its obligations”.The Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) overseeing the agreement confirmed that no cargo movements had been approved for Sunday. Nine cargo ships were able to use the Black Sea corridor on Saturday and “more than ten others” are ready to do the same in both directions, it said.Russia’s abrupt move on Saturday to halt the UN-brokered Black...

TEHRAN/LONDON — Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard issued a new warning on Saturday to Iranians joining the protests that have roiled the country since last month."We are again telling our youth, the minority who have been deceived, stop wicked acts. Finland's Marin apologizes for lack of action on rights of indigenous Sámi people
HELSINKI — Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has said she's sorry for delays in acting on new human rights legislation for indigenous Sámi people. It comes after Euronews highlighted ongoing problems with the Sámi Parliament Act, which Marin's government had promised to pass in their current legislative program.Four of the five parties in government are understood to support the legislation, which was drafted after lengthy negotiations with the Sámi Parliament in Inari, Lapland. However the Centre Party, which relies on voters in the countryside to shore up its support and typically takes a protectionist line on issues impacting rural areas, has emerged as a major stumbling block. The Sámi Parliament Act would, among other things, enshrine the right of self-determination for...

Russia suspends grain export deal after 'massive' Crimea drone attack
MOSCOW — Russia has said it is suspending its participation in the agreement to ensure the continuation of Ukrainian grain exports — vital for food supplies to poor countries — linking the decision to a drone attack on Russian ships in occupied Crimea on Saturday morning. The Defense Ministry announced the move, and it was also reported by the state news agency TASS."Taking into account the terrorist act carried out by the Kiev regime with the participation of British experts against ships of the Black Sea fleet and civilian vessels involved in the security of grain corridors, Russia suspends its participation in the implementation of the agreement on exports of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports," the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Telegram. The move comes a...

KIEV — Ukraine has carried out a “massive” drone attack on the Black Sea Fleet in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol, damaging one warship, Russia says.Nine drones were used, a top official said. Ukraine has not commented.Without providing evidence, Russia accused British troops of being involved in Saturday’s attack — and in blowing up gas pipelines last month. In its response, the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Russia was “peddling false claims of an epic scale”.Saturday’s attack comes as Ukrainian troops successfully retake territory occupied by Russian troops since they launched their invasion on Feb. 24.Russia has replied by launching large-scale attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly on the country’s energy grid.Crimea was annexed by Russia from...
