Frederiksen’s government hangs in balance as it battles for centrist votes in Denmark
COPENHAGEN — Denmark is holding a national election on Tuesday, expected to change the Scandinavian nation’s political landscape as new parties seek to enter parliament and others see their support dwindle.Neither the center-left nor the center-right is believed to be able to capture the 90-seat majority in the 179-seat Folketing legislature. That could leave a former prime minister who left his party to create a new one this year as the kingmaker if his votes end up being needed to form a new government.Domestic issues have dominated the campaign, ranging from tax cuts and a need to hire more nurses to financially supporting Danes amid inflation and soaring energy prices because of Russia’s war in Ukraine.Denmark’s more than four million can choose lawmakers from among 14 parties....

Ukraine war: Grain deal continues despite Russia pullout
KIEV — Three more vessels left Ukrainian ports on Tuesday, the UN-led center coordinating the Black Sea grain export deal said, despite a Russian decision to suspend its backing of the scheme. The center said the ships’ movement has been agreed by Ukraine, Turkey and the UN, while Russia “has been informed”. On Monday, 12 ships carrying 354,500 tons of food sailed from Ukraine.Russia halted its backing for the deal on Saturday, accusing Ukraine of using a safety corridor to attack its fleet. The UN said there were no ships inside the corridor that night.Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attack in Crimea — Ukraine’s southern peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of “blackmailing the world with hunger” — a...

UK minister Braverman slammed over migrant ‘invasion’ remark
LONDON — British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been accused of using inflammatory language after describing the arrival of asylum seekers on England’s southern coast as an “invasion”.Her comments in parliament on Monday came a day after a man used firebombs to attack an immigration processing center in the port town of Dover. The number of people crossing the English Channel in small boats has soared this year, putting enormous pressure on border staff, facilities and the system dealing with their claims.“The British people deserve to know which party is serious about stopping the invasion on our southern coast and which party is not,” Braverman, the British interior minister, told the House of Commons in response to opposition criticism.“Some 40,000 people have arrived...

UK government slammed for 'wretched' migrant center
LONDON — Members of parliament from across the UK political divide have demanded that the ruling Conservative government improve the "wretched" conditions at an overcrowded facility for migrants.Hundreds of people who crossed the English Channel in small boats have been moved to Manston, a former airfield in southeast England after another processing center was hit with gasoline bombs on Sunday by an attacker who then killed himself. There already were 3,000 people at the facility, which is intended to hold about half that number.Home Secretary Suella Braverman is due to deliver a statement to parliament on Monday to answer questions about conditions at Manston, following demands for her to do so from MPs.It is supposed to be a temporary processing center where new arrivals...

Russia launches ‘massive’ attack on key infrastructure in Ukraine, say authorities
KIEV — Russia conducted a “massive” barrage of strikes on critical infrastructure in Kiev, Kharkiv and other cities on Monday morning, Ukrainian authorities reported.“Another batch of Russian missiles hits Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. Instead of fighting on the battlefield, Russia fights civilians,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.“Don’t justify these attacks by calling them a ‘response’. Russia does this because it still has the missiles and the will to kill Ukrainians.”Part of the Ukrainian capital was cut off from power and water supplies due to the attacks, Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Some 350,000 apartments were affected, according to him.Ukrainian sources claim Moscow forces used drones and strategic bombers in Monday’s wave of...

Hungary closing public facilities due to soaring cost of energy
BUDAPEST — Dozens of cities are closing venues across Hungary due to soaring energy costs. The most common public facilities affected are theaters, spas, pools, libraries, museums and sports venues.Szeged, a city of 160,000 people, is one such city having to tighten its belt. The deputy mayor says their gas bill has increased sevenfold and the government does nothing to help.“The Hungarian state has created a dysfunctional system in the municipal sector from Jan. 1 (when the price change kicks in for many). There are municipalities that have been partially dysfunctional since September, trying to perform at least the mandatory public tasks, but with reduced public transport or closed facilities,” explained the city’s deputy mayor, Tamás Kovács.The situation is the same across the...
