The ‘sinful’ eclipse
The “heavens” and “celestial objects” have intrigued human beings on different intellectual levels throughout history. Mathematicians, physicists and astronomers have been interested in unraveling their scientific mysteries while ancient cultures attempted to understand them through myths and legends. The changes of these heavenly bodies and their movements have inspired and evoked a wide range of emotions in people’s hearts and minds from love and serenity to fear and lunacy that have been manifested in the great works of poets and writers around the world. So, imagine what happened to our ancestors when they saw the sun or the moon suddenly darken; it must have felt apocalyptic. Some cultures considered solar and lunar eclipses to be signs of their god’s wrath or bad omens....

Some are more equal in new India
Some elitist clubs and hotels in British India, the last surviving bastions of the Raj, until not long ago famously proclaimed: “Dogs and Indians Not Allowed!”We have certainly come a long way since those discerning times when men and their social standing were determined on the basis of the color of their skin. Today, as India proudly celebrates its 70th year of independent existence, we couldn’t be freer as a people. However, as borders become increasingly irrelevant in a globalized, networked world, for some there is no getting away from discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, caste and color. One of the magnificent obsessions of Prime Minister Modi has been his urge to reach out to the enterprising and economically influential Indian diaspora and talk of the enduring...

A twilight of reckoning
Every day, Palestinian civilians are being murdered in cold blood by the ruthless and heavily armed Israeli forces operating in occupied Palestine. Coupled with the viciousness of the armed Israeli settlers who have illegally encroached on Palestinian lands, the situation is beyond dire. It is a holocaust of some proportions as ethnic cleansing is in full swing under the patronage of Benjamin Netanyahu, who will undoubtedly one day be charged with having committed crimes against humanity. And yet, the world watches in silence.Along with thousands of illegal settlers, Netanyahu is calculatedly following the game plan set by his mentor Ariel Sharon, a former Israeli prime minister who once said in a recorded interview: “I don’t know something called International Principles. I vow that...

The Palestine issue and President Trump
There is no doubt that Palestine is one of the most complicated problems on the face of the earth. There are not many other problems that have caused such wars as have been fought over Palestine. There are not many people who have been subjected to so much injustice, persecution, murder and displacement as have the Palestinians. The people of Palestine have been expelled from their land, have been victims of massacre, and have been forced to flee their homeland and take shelter in neighboring countries. A large number of them are languishing in refugee camps in miserable conditions with the hope that their rights will be restored to them one day and that the conscience of the global community will bring them international justice. There are currently reports that US President Donald Trump...

Trump’s business in the Middle East
HARDLY ever the world has agreed on the greatness of a politician — for a good reason. A philosopher, once, listened to a eulogy of a great statesman. “Here’s lie a decent honest, man,” the eulogist announced. The philosopher commented. “Oh, I didn’t know there were two men in that coffin!”Men of principles have always been rare commodity in political circles. Few were allowed to lead — Prophets included. In modern history, we were lucky to have such men during great challenging events, such as wars, conflicts and depressions. They inspired, unified and led their nations — and the world beyond. In America we had Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Theodor Roosevelt. In Europe: Charles De Gaulle, Winston Churchill, Joseph Tito. In Africa, Nelson Mandela,...

‘Ban coffee’
I WAS engaged in an interesting discussion with a group of friends of which some of whom are managers and heads of sections at private companies while others are regular employees both in private and public sectors. As is the case with every discussion after random talk, the discussion generally veers toward a central topic. So did our discussion when after the initial casual talk our discussion gained heat with a cool central topic — coffee.I know the word must have jarred you readers for a debate on java (slang for coffee) was the least expected topic by you all. But let me bring you’ll back to the issue from the start. The discussion started with all weighing in on the bad performance of some employees during the month of Ramadan. All of us attributed many reasons to the bad or poor...

Bye bye Netanyahu!
THE curtain seems to be coming down on the era of the controversial Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Now Israel is actually preparing for a political future soon without Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s end is approaching after his eight-year rule in which there was no political rival and no effective opposition. The period also witnessed relative security in the border areas as Arab region was occupied dealing with terrorist and extremist organizations such as Daesh (the so-called Islamic State), Al-Qaeda and Hezbollah. As the Arab world was reeling from internal fighting, Israel focused on its economy, registering a significant growth exceeding 4 percent. The country also broke the psychological barrier in the development of political and diplomatic relations by forging ties with...

Qatar looks for solutions in Kerala
It has been three months since the Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar. There is no immediate settlement in sight, and the four countries will not back down on the conditions and demands they have set. After all, their patience has worn thin due to Qatar’s policies, which are against all international norms and conventions. The situation has been complicated because of the malicious policies of Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, former Emir of Qatar, and Hamad Bin Jassim, former Prime Minister of Qatar, and because of Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad’s refusal to address the demands which he pledged to do, and his refusal to abide by the six principles announced by the states which call for combatting terrorism.Qatar’s government has been seeking support in...

Ottawa doesn’t seem to care about Canadian languishing in French jail
Independent Jewish Voices of Canada is urging Canadians to phone the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and insist politely but firmly that the prime minister intervene with the French government and ask for Hassan Diab’s immediate release and return to his home in Canada. The Diab case has been in the news for years. Canadian authorities know his case by heart. Still the government has adopted what looks like a do-nothing approach.Dr. Diab is a Canadian academic. France wanted to question him because a synagogue was attacked in Paris in October 1980 killing four people and injuring 46. Authorities sought his extradition for questioning saying that Diab’s handwriting resembles five words written by the suspect on a hotel register in 1980.Diab maintains that he was not in France at...

Europe’s extremism problem
In a panel discussion of MiSK Tweeps held on the sidelines of the Riyadh summit on May 22, Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir addressed the French allegations of Saudi support for Islamic extremism in France, saying: “We have long been accused of supporting and financing extremist mosques and Islamic centers in France. The Saudi response has always been to ask for proof in order to shut those centers down. Nevertheless, we end up in a barren discussion with the French side having no such proof. The problem is that such baseless fallacies and assumptions have become a reality in public opinion.”He went on to say that a “French parliament report on foreign financing of mosques in France, published in July 2015, proves that the Gulf financing of mosques and Islamic centers makes up only 1...
