Haj is an opportunity to show unity, fight Satan
EVERY year, hundreds of thousands of Muslims from around the world gather in Makkah, a central place of inhabited portion of the Earth. In Makkah, the House of God (Kaaba, Bait Allah) was founded by Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), the father of human race on earth. Hence there is no better way to unite humanity other than to call them to gather in the house of their One and the Only Creator. Every single member of human race on the globe has a natural affiliation with his greatest grandfather, Adam (peace be upon him). Hence every human being would like to visit the house constructed by the ultimate father. The very sacred house was reconstructed by Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh), the founding father of great religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Every Muslim, Christian and Jew today has...

Haj is an opportunity to show unity, fight Satan

Memories of my first Haj
ALL praise to Almighty Allah, I have performed Haj at least 10 times. I still recall the best, most complete and hardest Haj that I have ever performed. That time, my age was below 20. I used to attend religious classes delivered by Sheikh Mahjoub, a Sudanese scholar, who served as imam and khateeb of Bin Mahfouz Mosque in Old Jeddah, which was built by Sheikh Salem Bin Mahfouz, founder of the National Commercial Bank. Bin Mahfouz had built several mosques elsewhere in Jeddah, but this mosque was distinctive as it was the first mosque in Jeddah where carpets were spread out, according to my knowledge. In his classes, Sheikh Mahjoub explained the way in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), performed the Haj rituals. So I decided to perform the pilgrimage of Haj in the same way...

We need more than books
IN A rapidly changing world, we need more than books to mete out quality education. Enough has been written in the past about the shortfalls in our education system and although changes have slowly crept in to keep up with the times, they have not been dramatic enough.A case in point illustrates some of the inadequacies that still exist. Sometimes back, I came upon a GMC Suburban with a group of five teenagers crouched about the rear wheel of the car, closely examining it with animated gestures. As I came closer, I could see it was a flat tire, and from the snippets of conversation I overheard, I could also tell that none of these kids seemed to know what to do next.Approaching them with an offer to help, I asked the group who the car belonged to and if they were licensed to drive. One of...

Should we accept US ‘Mideast Peace Initiative’?
WHEN a Palestinian asked me in an international conference where I came from, I announced: I am a Palestinian from Saudi Arabia. I explained that Palestine and Jerusalem are weaved into our genes.” I went on to give a presentation about the Saudi stand on the new US drive to kick off Arab-Israeli peace process.I told my audience: In his meeting with US President Franklin Roosevelt, 1945, King Abdulaziz was asked, “Why do you object to the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine? Surely you sympathize with their suffering at the hands of the Nazis,” asked Roosevelt. Ibn Saud answered, “Who subjected the Jews to such injustice? We treated them well in Palestine and other Arab countries. If it is justice you are seeking, you should give them a piece of Germany.”It didn’t...

When Hindus and Muslims lived in harmony
AT a time when the Muslims are being hunted like animals on the benign watch of the BJP, two brave new books revisit a time when they ruled the country. The Hindus and Muslims lived in harmony under Muslim rulers, including under the powerful Moguls, argues Audrey Truschke of Stanford University, an authority on South Asian culture and history. In her fascinating book, Culture of Encounters: Sanskrit at the Mughal Court, Truschke suggests that the heyday of Muslim rule, from the 16th to 18th centuries, had been one of "tremendous cross-cultural respect and fertilization and not religious or cultural conflict."Emphasizing that the high-level interaction between learned Muslims and Hindus was marked by collaborative encounters across linguistic and religious lines, her research...

Neymar's dubious deal!
DURING this time every year, the world returns to buy-and-sell deals among international football clubs. This is the so-called transfer season. However, this year the transfer of the Brazilian player Neymar from Barcelona club to Paris Saint-Germain club, was in the spotlight. It made headlines not merely as sports news but as a political issue as well. The deal was exaggerated and unprecedented, prompting surprise and opening questions about the motives of this dubious deal across the world. The reported amount that changed hands is 220 million euros, but other financial details, which were not disclosed, suggested that the total deal was between 500 and 800 million euros, which is of course, an astronomical figure that cannot be followed by a natural or normal sports deal.Paris...

Haj: A sight to behold
GOD SAID in the Holy Qur’an, “And proclaim to the people the Haj (pilgrimage); they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass”.Haj is on (the day after tomorrow) and there is no more beautiful sight than the sight of the hundreds of thousands of Muslims coming from all entry points, dressed in white and with one mission, to perform their once in a lifetime duty in peace and security. We as, the government of Saudi Arabia and its people, take full pride in welcoming the guests of Allah and embrace them with open arms.Saudi Arabia has mobilized all its resources, like it does every year, to ensure that pilgrims will perform their pilgrimage in peace and comfort. All sectors — government departments, passport, security, Haj, health and...

French president hits the headwinds of nationalism
EMMANUEL Macron, president of France with all the glory that commands, has had a wretchedly brief honeymoon. Elected in May with some 67 percent of the vote, he promised to respect and address the “anger, the anxiety and the doubts” which many had expressed, and pledged to “recreate the links between Europe and its peoples.”Since that heady night, he has been plunged from the heights of hope into the apparently eternal hard facts of French political life. His stellar approval ratings descended rapidly from 64 percent in June to an anemic 37 percent earlier this week. Polls are volatile things, but it’s likely this reflects tougher verities than seasonal fluctuation on the part of the French electorate.Macron’s capture of two thirds of the electorate was made when the voters...

There’s another way to prevent extremist attacks
Spain’s counter-terrorism laws are among the toughest in Europe. Its immigration policies are restrictive and the razor-wire fences at its borders are menacing. Yet this didn’t deter a group of young, male, Muslim immigrants - some born in Morocco, some in Spain to Moroccan immigrant families - from turning violently on their neighbors on August 17, killing 15 people in a series of attacks in and around Barcelona. We don’t yet know much about how and why they became radicalized, but it’s likely they felt unwanted in Spain, where, according to a 2016 research paper by sociologist Francisco Javier Ullán de la Rosa of the University of Alicante, two decades of surveys show that “rejection against the culturally different in Spain” tends to focus on Moroccans, who comprise the vast...

Merkel assuming leadership role in world of erratic strongmen
Alarmed by the rise of unpredictable strongmen around the world, Angela Merkel feels she must do more to defend the Western order on which Germany depends. It has been a transformation for the chancellor. Last year, she dismissed as “absurd” the idea that she should head a Western alliance shaken by Donald Trump’s US election victory.Weakened by Europe’s migrant crisis, Merkel even wondered if she should run for re-election. “She asked herself: ‘Can I do this? Am I ready for this?’” one close aide said. But now, with the migrant issue under control in Germany, the 63-year-old is ready. Visibly happier, she is campaigning for next month’s election with renewed conviction: a resolve to secure a world order threatened by leaders like Trump, Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s...
