Goodbye, my lovely children
THE month of March this year spells the end of long established family arrangements for a lot of expatriates, many of whom are from the Asian continent. It is in this month that the end of school year exams is being held, and it is in this month that many of the graduating expat children will bid goodbye to a land they have been residing in.For parents it is an emotional time as families are being wrenched apart by the decision of the head of household to send them back to their home country, a decision that was heavily considered and taken bearing in mind the added expenses the expat had to bear for the allowance of maintaining his or her family members here. While the host country deems the dependent levy vital to its goals, it is a burden for many expats who just cannot bear the added...

Saudi women make the most of International Women’s Day
THE idea of celebrating the International Women’s Day dates back to the beginning of the second half of the 19th century when demonstrations were staged by thousands of women in New York City in protest against the ill-treatment they had been subjected to. They demanded a change in the difficult circumstances under which they were forced to work. Police used force to disburse these demonstrations. But the struggle by women seeking their rights continued for a long time and New York City’s streets again witnessed women’s march in the beginning of the 20th century. The activists demanded women’s rights such as shorter working hours, better pay, an end to child labor and the right to vote. A group of women workers also carried banners proclaiming “Bread and Roses.”The campaign for...

Syrian blood on the hands of world powers
NOTHING in recent times, perhaps with the exception of Israel, has exposed the ineptitude and sheer spinelessness of the United Nations and the blessed international community as Syria has. All the glorious international institutions and fine laws have proved useless in dealing with one obstinate and murderous tyrant. The UN has repeatedly warned of the unraveling of Syria and its disastrous consequences for the rest of the region and the world beyond. UN Human Rights Commissioner warned that Syria would be “transformed into hell!” Well, how different hell would be from what we have been witnessing in Syria for the past seven years?More than half a million are dead and more than half of Syria’s population now lives as refugees across the region and beyond. But rest assured; the world...

Crown Prince’s tour — frequently asked questions
IT seems whatever our Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman says or wherever he goes, a media storm follows. I was asked by almost every major TV network about the Crown Prince’s visits to Egypt and Britain. Questions cover politics, economics, military, culture and religious issues. Reporters are curious about the recent laws that affected social life, empowering women and youth, while liberating culture, social life and entrainment. Here’s some of my answers to frequently asked questions:How much success has the UK visit achieved?I believe the visit has achieved more than we expected. The economic agreements signed exceeded $100 billion, not including the purchase of 48 Typhoon fighter jets or the signed $30 billion in business deals. Britain has showed great interest in Saudi Arabia’s...

‘Sensational’ talk
OVER 15 years ago, I attended a three-day brainstorming event, which brought me together with politicians, media professionals and opinion makers from the Arab world and the United States. In one of the interactive sessions conducted by the director of dialogue, a “sensational” Middle East par excellence media was the expression chosen to describe the news correspondent of Al Jazeera channel. Fox was another channel, which was also described the same way. These two TV stations are the most exaggerated channels in the terms of their editorial slant in the news.I was not surprised at the time when Al-Jazeera adopted a permissive and asymmetrical approach to its news coverage, and gradually it turned out to be a mere “tool” in the hands of the coup regime in Qatar, which used the...

Social media and boycotting relatives
BOYCOTTING relatives and sometimes parents is a major sin in Islam. When I say ‘boycotting’, I mean, it is a time when relatives do not call or visit each other or even ask about each other. They do not share good moments with them or even condole one another in the event of deaths in the family. In addition, the ostracizing, in nearly every case, comes with the harboring of great hatred against the other and his family with some even going as far as intending or just wishing harm on the other relatives. The reasons that could lead to this great sin vary. There are those who simply envy their relatives, there are those who are so gullible that they are easily poisoned by rumors to hate other relatives, there are also inheritance or business problems between relatives and then there are...

Arab globalization through ‘Saudilization’
IN September 2017, after decades of multitude of efforts to develop the generation and put the best foot forward as Saudis in globalization, two pools of the population — the young and the women have succeeded. The government of Saudi Arabia equally supported by coming up with sustainable development program — The Saudi Vision 2030. The Saudization strategy was the first step to start this long-planned journey wherein we have now reached to a state, which we can proudly say “Saudilization”.In terms of competing with globalization, the government of Saudi Arabia under the rule of late King Abdullah and his successor King Salman have forwarded and developed the nation with five-fold strategy which has become so much successful in the last two decades that third world countries and...

Dar Al-Hekma students excel in an impressive research forum
OVER 76 bright students presented 32 research papers during the research Forum held at Dar Al-Hekma University on March 4. All the topics presented were up to date and impressive, however, due to limited space I can only share a few of them. The young researchers had a good command of the English language and they delivered their presentations with great confidence and eloquence. It was obvious that they have researched their subjects well and based their conclusions upon proper scientific methodologies. Some students conducted their research individually and others showed great enthusiasm working as a group.Sawsan AlGhamdi, Hajer Qadh, Malak Ghazzaw, Najd Binobaid, Tahani Alamoudi presented a paper about “The New Decree of Allowing Women to Drive and The Different Marketing Strategies...

The undiscovered treasure
NO matter how many natural resources a country has, the human resource is the most important, especially the well-trained and well-qualified. This type of resource is priceless and is viewed as the real resource of a country. It is strange that we have rich human resources that can help accomplish a gigantic industrial revolution, especially if we train them well, yet we have not trained them and preferred to recruit workers from outside. Apparently, we do not have a strategy that helps us provide Saudi workers doing jobs that are on demand at the labor market. The General Statistics Authority's reports show that unemployment has reached 12.8 %.Any country that fails to develop its human resources, will definitely fail in achieving any industrial development no matter how hard it...

Why Saudi families are overjoyed to be able to enter stadiums
WHY should Saudi families not be overjoyed to enter stadiums? I come from a family in which my uncles were captains of the Al-Ittihad football team. They played in games I never had the chance to watch because they were not filmed those days in the late 1960s. For many years, I heard about the skill, performance and achievements of my father and uncles on the pitch through word of mouth. I attend football matches abroad with my family but have never done so here in the Kingdom. I have attended matches in which the Saudi national team has played abroad, but never in Saudi Arabia. I attended, as a sport reporter, Saudi volleyball and water polo finals in 2008. However, these events took place in closed rooms behind opaque glass screens so no one would know a female was there.I used to watch...
