Ignorant authors and criticism
THE Riyadh Book Fair, which took place from March 14-24, is a cultural carnival and a continuation of many other book and cultural activities in the Kingdom and in the region. I have visited many book fairs, in Saudi Arabia and in the region, and it was a welcome sight to see people, especially youth who are addicted to electronic gadgets, browsing through the tens of thousands of book titles and touching a book instead of an iPhone or an iPad in this book fair. This trend among the youth, I hope, will grow and that the book will once again become an integral part of the youth’s free time and thus fix and enlighten them of what electronic gadgets are destroying.Incidents that accompany book fair gatherings did happen in the past. We used to see conservatives complaining about some book...

Jews: The forgotten story in the Arab world!
THERE is a sensitive issue that does not get enough attention, and I know well in advance that this subject will evoke extreme emotional reactions. The subject, I dwell on here, is the rights of the Jews of the Middle East in their former countries. Irrespective of the immediate cynical responses, or not, the citizens should have their rights in their country first before we care for the others. The Jews were part of pure Arab societies and the region was their home. They were forcibly driven out as a result of persistent harassment, questioning their loyalty. If the sustained pressure did not yield the desired result, their property was nationalized. They were subjected to systematic target often being accused of betrayal and disloyalty despite the fact that they were proponents of the...

Women empowerment: Catching the train
THE empowerment as it is called cannot happen in isolation whether it is like giving a weapon to a soldier or a train ticket to a passenger.Women empowerment is about enabling women to utilize their potential, liberating them to have their own discretion in their lives and considering women as equal to men rather than inferior or superior. We will understand this by a simple example of catching a train and reaching a destination is the achievement of empowerment. For example, we would like to empower Mona and Lilia and free them from any gender bias or inferiority feelings caused to them earlier. The first phase of enabling women empowerment is that the government makes rules that everyone must consider Mona and Lilia their equal, cause them no harm and accept them in the society. However,...

A new Cold War between Russia and UK
WHERE will the case of the alleged use of poison gas against former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal take the relations between Britain and Russia? As Britain sought the support of all the Western countries on the issue, it is not certain whether the issue would further exacerbate or not. These countries were quick in coming out in support of their ally, even though it was in varying degrees. Despite giving full support to its ally, France and Germany are not in favor of allowing the case reaching such a stage of escalation by giving hints that they are awaiting the outcome of the investigation. As for the United States, it has been quick to respond with imposing sanctions on Russia. The US attributed its swift action to Russia’s intervention in the US presidential elections that...

Mental health should be meticulously diagnosed before treatment
A GROWING number of patients are seeking the help of psychiatrists, and how business was booming for those prescribing the magic pill. There is no question that regional developments and uncertainties have led many to a life of anxiety and depression. Not all mental issues have to be treated by drugs. From the little I know, there is little in the way of local therapeutic help, or psychiatric treatment through a concentrated study of the patient’s medical and social background at hospitals. There are few if any established groups manned by qualified therapists for group therapy as in other countries. At such major hospitals, it is not uncommon to notice swarms of patients waiting dolefully for their monthly prescriptions of mind-soothing drugs. The psychiatrist on duty seems to have a...

Soft Hindutva is no cure for Congress
INDIAN Muslims fell out of love with the Congress, long before Rajiv Gandhi decided to unlock the doors of Babri Masjid, unleashing a monster that still continues to maul the Indian polity. The Muslims haven’t still gotten over the fact that it was under the Congress that idols were first sneaked into the 16th century mosque in 1949 and it was a Congress government that allowed ‘shilanyas’ (foundation) ceremony for Ram temple in Ayodhya. Again, it was under Narasimha Rao of the Congress that a Hindu mob was allowed to amass and eventually destroy the mosque on Dec. 6, 1992.No wonder the Congress remained the most despised party for Muslims throughout the 90s, perhaps even more than the BJP. They strategically voted against it wherever possible, keeping the party out of power for long...

What the Crown Prince didn’t say!
AGAIN, we make headlines! Again, our Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman “MBS” is making waves in world media. And, again, Iran and company are in a media blitz against the prince and his nation.“Tomorrow is going to be fully full!,” says Nabeel Maghrabi, the studio engineer responsible for TV satellite transmission at one of the top Jeddah providers. “I’ll be standby for the whole week, starting Monday. We had a lot of reservations and expect back-to-back recordings. Most of our clients are new. US, European and Asian TVs are taking every available spot, day and night,” he explains. He is not alone. Other providers are busy, too. Commentators, like me, are expecting the same thrust. Not that we mind — not at all. We love to talk about our young prince and his “vision.”In...

US, Russia, China: What’s going on?
TOP politicians in the United States are very concerned. There are those who believe that the Unites States America is facing a severe crisis with regards to its foreign relations and that its role in the world has changed dramatically and drastically. The current administration of Donald Trump is, to say the least, unconventional and unpredictable.Perhaps members of the ruling Republican Party themselves are the first ones to realize this. Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney has decided to run in the upcoming election in Utah to become a member of the US Senate. Romney, who is regarded as a “big” man from the party, can serve as a shield against Trump’s causal and brazen acts, the role which was played by Senator John McCain, but the latter seems exhausted battling cancer and...

Helping a child to smoke!
NEARLY two weeks ago social media was afire with a video clip that left many smoldering at the foolishness of a man’s act. The clip showed a man with a child on his lap, and the man was making the child smoke a cigarette. The video sparked outrage and many vented their anger in social media. The video clip was short but the anger was great as many people called for authorities to quickly intervene and save the child from, what they thought at that time, the abusive father. They even went further by declaring the ‘father’ unfit to raise his child calling on the government to take control of raising him.The clip was ten seconds long and showed the ‘father’ placing the cigarette in the mouth of this child. The child inhaled the smoke and started coughing, while the ‘father’...

How Iran finances Hezbollah
HEZBOLLAH is the ‘righteous son’ of the Iranian Revolution in the context of the Iranian attempt to export the revolution. Its birth was attained by the Iranian ambassadors in Syria, Ali Mohtashami and Mohammad Hasan Akhtari, the latter of whom stated: “Hezbollah, Hamas, and the (Islamic) Jihad are the legitimate sons of the Iranian revolution”. Since its establishment in the early 1980s, the main financial support for Hezbollah has come from Iran. Although Hezbollah later tried to rely on other means of (self)-financing, such as money laundering and drugs, financial support from Iran has remained the backbone of both its domestic and its overseas operations. For example, Iran’s annual financial support of Hezbollah reached $60-100 million, i.e. $5-10 million per month as...
