Forum... and honor!
I PARTICIPATED in the annual grand media festival, known as the “Arab Media Forum” organized by the Dubai Press Club recently. It was under the theme “Impactful Media Trends.”The forum brought together prominent personalities from diverse fields from different countries of the Arab world to discuss a wide range of topics. The organization was as impressive as other usual events that are held in Dubai. The forum offered me a good opportunity to communicate and interact with distinguished figures from various fields and attend symposia in which I listened to the introductory speech of friend Mamoun Fandy, who analyzed the new Middle East with a media vision and Professor Sawsan Al-Shaer talking about new media dimensions.Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Al-Khalifa reviewed the...

Sports investment: The power of soft power
When the Duke of Wellington, the leader of the English army at Waterloo, was asked the reason behind his victory in the battle, he replied: “The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton”. Eton College is one of the finest, largest, and richest private schools in Britain and in the world.Sports have never been just about physical activities. They have been used by many countries to showcase their image and brand on the international scene and to enhance their citizens’ national identity. They are also a significant contributor to increasing income and supporting economies by improving tourism and increasing investment. Therefore, Saudi Vision 2030 pays great attention to sports. One of the key objectives of the vision is to promote the regular practice of sporting...

Is there any justification for the attack on Khales Jalbi?
Khales Jalbi is a Canadian Muslim national of Syrian origin. He studied medicine in Germany with a specialization in vascular surgery. Apart from being a physician, he is a thinker, writer and critic. He worked in the Kingdom for more than 30 years as a doctor being transferred to several regions of the country. He also used to write in many Saudi newspapers.I knew him as a writer before I learned that he was a doctor. I was keen to read his articles whenever I had an opportunity to do so. In his writings, Jalbi tended to criticize some heritage sites, and called for a review of the texts associated with some of them. This provoked one sheikhs to blame him for treachery and apostasy. He also sought Jalbi’s deportation but that did not happen.Jalbi responded to the sheikh’s plea in a...

Taken for a ride!
Recently, my morning reverie and the gentle calm before the day begins were shattered when my friend Barakat burst into my office frothing at the mouth and fuming in anger. Barakat who works at one of the country’s larger corporations was obviously in an elevated state of distress and agitation. After a prolonged interval of soothing and words of comfort, I managed to calm him down long enough to get to the cause of his frustrations. It seems that he had just been to his boss asking for a performance review and a promotion to a vacant position. His boss, as some bosses are inclined to be, took him for a ride on the long road to nowhere. He explained to his subordinate that the company’s output was below par, profit margins were off target and the company was seriously considering...

Is the party over for the BJP?
The general elections in India are still a year away. Yet given the state of the nation today, the electorate cannot seemingly wait to throw out the dispensation that came promising ‘ache din,’ not to mention tall claims like 20 million jobs, bullet trains, Rs15 lakh ($23,000) in every bank account and, above all, good governance. With disasters mounting on every front, that talk of ‘ache din’ sounds like a bad joke today. Indeed, the joke is on us — the people of India. Forget good governance and endless dreams of emerging as the next great power, ordinary Indians should thank their lucky stars if they manage to survive another day or week under this regime unscathed. The economy is in a mess. Yet the bulls of Bombay Sensex continue to gallop and the rich get richer. But markets...

Prince MBS in Paris — what to expect?
THREE weeks in the United States, after many days in Egypt and the United Kingdom, and the energetic Crown Prince is still on the go. His “Charm Offensive” tour, as TIME magazine described it, is continuing in France and probably Spain. During his world tour, Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman met with all relevant figures for his Vision 2030. They included royals, presidents, prime ministers, ministers, and a long list of religious, political, military and academic leaders. His meetings with bankers, CEOs of energy, space and entertainment firms are quite important for the Vision 2030.In Paris, MBS will attend cultural events, political meetings and an economic forum. A mega tourism project between the two countries is to be announced. No other mega deals are expected, however. A...

Bahrain: Book fair and castle!
AWAY from politics, away from the economy, as far as possible, I like to visit book fairs in the Arab world. I know quite well the suffering of writers and the challenges of publishing houses in dealing with the variables and habits of reading during a time of transformation. Every book exhibition has to present itself as “different” and “attractive” to capture the interests of readers and visitors. There is a big difference between the book fair as an opportunity to sell and manage the largest number of copies of books and an exhibition which is presented as an integrated cultural event, combining the presentation and sale of books and holding events suitable for the occasion. In terms of quantity and numbers, there are many book fairs held in the Arab world. Some countries even...

Battered women and invasion of privacy
THE curious case of the ‘battered woman of Abha’ had all the twists that a veritable mystery novel would take, keeping the reader engaged till the end. The case, that went viral in social media, too had its share of twists and turns, but in the end it was the underlying message that assault and battery are the basest form of acts or threats against another human being that needs to be taken from this incident. It is also a cowardly act that needs to be condemned and against which corrective or punitive actions need to be instituted.Coming back to the incident on hand, for the past few days social media has been super active with a throbbing interest in the case of the battered woman in Abha after it was posted online by a concerned party. The video clip was just around ten seconds...

Trudeau loses some luster but still strong
When Justin Trudeau became leader of the Liberal party, the Conservatives were leading in the polls with the New Democratic party second. Trudeau, whose Liberals were third, campaigned as a compassionate man who respects citizens, favors equality and promotes justice. His party won a majority of seats in the election. He remains popular though three years in office have produced some disappointments.Trudeau made several campaign promises, some of which he has not implemented. But he remains committed to improving the lives of the Aboriginal people, fighting racism against blacks and protecting the environment, three daunting tasks that require courage, wisdom and compassion.Trudeau remains popular with the people and indeed with much of the world. His Liberals lead in polls, but by a slim...

What should be done with joint stock companies that are run at a loss?
Before establishing a company, feasibility studies should be carried to gather information about the scope of the business activity that the company intends to engage in. This information should then be thoroughly reviewed to pinpoint the extent of the company’s success as well as the risks involved in addition to projecting the revenue and profits of the company. The competent authorities should review all the studies and information pertaining to the company, especially if the company plans to offer their shares to the public.A number of companies have been established over the past years. There has often been an overwhelming response from the public to buy shares when these companies launched their initial public offering. However, the allocation of the shares of many of these...
