Street cleaners are entitled to our charity
A video went viral on social media recently showing a person offering a bottle of cold water to a street cleaner who was working in the hot sun. The man was sitting in his car and distributing bottles of water to those passing by. The cleaner was happy to get a bottle of cold water free of charge. However, condition of street cleaners tells us something more like the following: “Thanks a lot, but my needs and my rights are more than this bottle of cold water.”When I once stopped my car to give a street cleaner a small amount of money with which he could buy a bottle of water or a sandwich or something similar, some people traveling in their cars or walking nearby started staring at me. Some of them looked at me with satisfaction, while others looked angry. One of them scolded me...

Don’t hand your child a loaded gun
Less than a fortnight ago, two young men lost their lives in an automobile accident in Jeddah. One of the victims was in his teens and the other barely out of it when their lives ended so prematurely. The vehicle they were driving was one of those bordering on a racetrack model, souped up and very fast. At the speed they were driving, apparently a tire blew out and the car flipped over smashing into a row of trees and bursting into flames. In view of the fact that the date for women driving on our streets is getting closer, there have been in the local press in recent weeks some features on such issues calling for the government and specifically the traffic department to do something about such drivers. Column after column has been written imploring the traffic authorities to take firm...

The new age of Saudi railways!
IT was a historic trip for me! I would have declared: “That’s one small step for (a) man; one giant leap for mankind.”Wait! It wasn’t a Mars landing, or anything near that. But for those waiting for such a train trip to Madinah for ages, it seems so. Thankfully, I was among few hundreds invited to test ride a high-speed electric train from King Abdullah Economic City to the Prophet City. Others had joined Prince Faisal Bin Salman, Madinah Governor, in a longer journey between the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, via the yet-unfinished Jeddah station. From Jeddah, a third trip was led by Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal.It was an amazing experience for all of us. It wasn’t like the first time we traveled in a high-speed train. Many, including me, have had such experience,...

Creating our own cinema content
LAST week, history was made following the reintroduction of cinema in our country after more than three decades of being off screen for whatever cultural or religious reasons. The joy of Saudi people following the decision by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, to bring back cinema as a key component in the shaping of the Saudi entertainment industry knew no bounds. A great segment of our society was finally relieved, and saw the decision implemented with the screening of the film Black Panther in Riyadh. There are a good percentage of our society who still see cinema as a medium of cultural invasion and a threat to our values. There were naysayers everywhere for every change citing this very reason to sustain the status quo without caring to join the...

'Ebola Qatar'!
AT one of the Arab airports, I was sipping coffee, waiting for my plane to take off, and I was surprised by someone with a Gulf accent coming near and asking me, do you mind talking to a Qatari businessman? I felt as if I was meeting an alien from another planet in a neutral space. I told him I do not prefer as it will make my blood boil and ruin my session. He said quickly, “I follow you; I follow your writings, your media presence and your continuous attack on Qatar.” He added, “God is with you and I follow your admiration and love for Bahrain. How can you love Bahrain more than Qatar?” I interrupted him and told him I thought it was time for Abu Haifa to extend his feet.Bahrain is a civilized country and you are a rogue state. Bahrain has presented a cultural model called...

Goodbye dear Abdul Majeed
A few weeks ago, on March 20 to be exact, I canceled all my engagements and appointments to travel to Jeddah airport to bid adieu to Abdul Majeed, who was my domestic driver.Abdul Majeed worked with me for more than 20 years, including 18 years under my sponsorship. As for the first two years, he was under the sponsorship of another citizen living in Makkah. The subject of transferring his sponsorship from the Makkah man to my sponsorship is a story worth telling. Before hiring him, I had a housekeeper from Bangladesh. He decided to go back to Bangladesh for good and he brought Abdul Majeed to me to replace him. I asked him if he had a residency permit (iqama). I also told him that he should obtain permission from his sponsor in writing saying that he had no objection in allowing Abdul...

Getting my point across
The other day I was in a supermarket. After having collected my goods, I made my way to the cashier to have my purchases rung up. The total came to SR 149.30. I handed the cashier two SR100 notes, only to receive a SR50 riyal note back along with the receipt, and with no explanation. No chewing gum or a package of facial tissues either. When I asked about the missing 70 halalas, I was told, rather rudely by the cashier, that the store did not carry any change. This jolted my usually mellow demeanor. A line was forming behind me, and I had a choice: Either to shut up meekly and walk out, or to make a stand in the face of those waiting impatiently behind me. I chose the latter course, as my sense of principles was affronted.“Now look here, my friend,” I told the cashier rather gruffly....

Messages to Iran — ‘The Way Out for Dummies!’
HOW hard is it for a mature leadership to understand a clear message, especially if it comes with a bang? How about a double, triple... and more, in a short span of time?Only recently, the world has sent too many messages to Iran, that could easily be included in a book titled: “The Way Out for Dummies!”The idea here, is that some weird heads in Tehran need 101 lessons to help them fathom the cost of intervention in the Arab world, and to provide them with the best ways to exit. These leaders have put their country in a self-made quagmire so deep and sticky that it looks like they might use a good advice to get out of it. Bad company, like Russia and North Korea, won’t be able to help, so cool heads and strong muscles are required. The question is: Are the strong-headed, dark-aged...

A ‘Muslim bogey’ to unite Hindus
COMMENTING on Hindutva’s ambitious project to “unite all Hindus”, Aakar Patel, former editor and current executive director of Amnesty International, offers an interesting argument. While it shouldn’t take much effort and imagination to unify an 85 percent strong majority, Hindus are not a monolithic community. Far from it. While Hindutva insists on bringing everyone under the overarching canopy of Hinduism, communities like the Sikhs, Jains and now even Lingayats bristle at being branded as Hindus.Much like Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism came into existence as reform movements against unjust social practices sanctioned by Hindu clergy. Buddha preached against idol worship and exploitation by the priestly class. Buddhism, which is today one of the world’s largest religions, paid a...

Ghazi Al-Gosaibi, the legend
GHAZI Abdulrahman Al-Gosaibi, the legendary former minister, poet, diplomat and administrator, is a name that will forever be engraved in the minds of people. In my opinion, such an astute minister and a diligent person comes once in a lifetime and blessed are those who knew him and those who learned from him. The later generations can only benefit from his experiences and examples, but Al-Gosaibi has done one better by getting his ideas penned into a book that is full of nuggets that one can choose and learn from. People must read his autobiography to understand him as a person, as a diplomat and as an administrator for it is full of positivity and a guideline to anyone who wants to start a career in life.Recently, the Ministry of Education decided to include Al-Gosaibi’s book “A...
