An airline under attack
Saudia Airlines, the Kingdom’s national carrier, has recently come under increasing attack by critics on social media due to an extraordinary number of flight delays that began just before the month of Ramadan. Critics sharpened their pens against the entire management of the airline as they poured their scorn on various social media sites calling for massive changes. Accusations were hurled as airline personnel were desperate to correct an abnormal situation caused by a number of factors. The airline immediately issued a public apology to its passengers for the delays in scheduled flights during the last few days, stressing that they were due to “exceptional circumstances”. The national carrier admitted that “several flights” were impacted due to the “heavy traffic...

Berlin airlift anniversary raises thorny geopolitical questions
This week, dignitaries and Western military veterans celebrated the seventieth anniversary of the Berlin airlift, the mammoth year-long effort to break a ground blockade by the Soviet Union. Whether the United States and its allies would go to the same length to support an ally today, however, remains a very open question. That, at least, appears the growing belief in Moscow and Beijing, both intent on pressuring their neighbors who are also US allies. It’s a perception the US military is going to increasing lengths to counter, despite - or perhaps in some respects because of - questions over where President Donald Trump himself stands. That uncertainty, however, risks opening the door to ever more dangerous confrontation. The question goes to the heart of the always messy paradox of...

War with Iran?
Everywhere I go, people ask: What’s up with Iran? Is America serious, this time? Are the mullahs bluffing, as usual? Is it going to be war? People are worried. War is not our piece of cake. Our region has had its fair share of wars. Iran and Iraq fought for eight years from 1980-1988. Then came the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait for over a year (1990-1991). And lastly, we had the American invasion of Iraq to topple Saddam’s regime under the pretext of the need to destroy weapons of mass destruction. Not to mention the war in Yemen and Syria, initiated by Iran and its proxies. During these wars, millions were killed or injured. They cost the region hundreds of billions of dollars and missed development and investment opportunities. Therefore, I understand the concern about yet...

Brotherhood and Hamadain: Erdogan dummies
Those who follow the policies of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan know the extent of his madness and constant frenzy to become the “new Ottoman” caliph, by exploiting the unrest in some Arab countries. He uses the Muslim Brotherhood outfit to achieve his goals and plans. He has provided its leaders and cadres a safe haven in his country and granted them licenses to establish satellite channels for the purpose of incitement, extortion and distortion as well as to attack countries through the marketing of lies and outdated slogans. Erdogan has sought to strengthen his friendship with the Hamadain regime, which represents the misguided Muslim Brotherhood’s fortune. He also forged an alliance with Iran’s Mullah Regime in search of cover that allowed him to truncate the northern...

Catastrophic water crisis!
While the water crisis in the Arab world is intensifying, this vital issue remains behind the scenes because of politics, terrorism and militancy. Egypt has been engaged in long and arduous discussions with Ethiopia to secure and consolidate its share of the Nile River, as the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam threatens Egyptian water safety. The dams of Turkey have become a clear threat to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Syria and Iraq, and the level of the rivers in both countries is threatened by the impact of life and agriculture. Syria, Lebanon and Jordan are all threatened by a severe shortage of water due to Israel and its various encroachments. Groundwater has been severely reduced in other Arab countries due to policies that have failed to rationalize its consumption. This challenge...

Medical procedures to make you lighter in the pocket
There are an increasing number of ads on social media heralding the arrival of some renowned physician or plastic surgeon coming to a local medical facility for a short visit. Readers are urged to seize the opportunity and book an appointment for a consultation. Renowned to whom, I wonder? Possibly to his family and a small group of close friends, I surmise. Back in the 1960s, a popular Western was airing weekly on TV titled “Have Gun, Will Travel.” It depicted a cowboy who went wherever the buck was available. Right or wrong was of secondary matter to him. He was a mercenary of sorts. An analogy to some of the lucrative medical practices today would be more like: “Have scalpel, will travel.” This visiting specialist’s qualifications are usually listed under the ad, and...

Graduation time: What’s next?
I was invited to speak to high school and college graduates. They sat there full of pride, happiness, hope ... and questions! I told them that I did not come to provide them with answers. No one could do that but themselves. What’s next? Many will volunteer to help them. Our young people will get a lot of recommendations from family, friends and teachers, and end up with many great ideas that make a lot of sense. The problem is they are now more confused than before! Which road to take? What makes the most sense? Should they choose a profession that has more monetary return, a better future and higher demand in the job market? Should they take the high but hard road, or the fast and enjoyable ride? Pick the prestigious profession or follow their hearts? I told them: There...

Terrorism strikes Sri Lanka!
As in Christchurch, New Zealand, terrorism has chosen another island nation. More than 300 people were killed and dozens were injured in a series of terrorist acts in different hotels and churches on the island of Sri Lanka. A peaceful country, located south of India, Sri Lanka enjoys a 97 percent literacy rate, the highest in South Asia, and is an amazing mix of religions, including Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. The island, which produces the finest tea in the world, was colonized by the Dutch, Portuguese and finally by Britain. In 1960, Ms. Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the world’s first non-hereditary female head of government when she was elected Prime Minster of Sri Lanka. And, of course, the country is world famous for its precious stones, especially the Ceylon royal...

Terrorism strikes Sri Lanka!

This is not the way to address grievances
The world has become very strange. The bizarre and gruesome events in Sri Lanka last week make one painfully aware that criminals come in all forms and disguises. This time they were hiding behind the cloak of honorable members of the business community who had no transactions in mind except to put into action their deviate ideas of mayhem and destruction. In that they are criminals, there is no question. For what they were planning to perpetuate was an act of violence against innocent people. The authorities must deal with them swiftly and firmly. And we the public must be supportive of counter-terrorism agencies as well, for indiscriminate violence touches each one of us.While terrorism is being exercised often on a large scale against innocent people through state-sponsored mandates...

Is Omar Al-Bashir an offender or a victim?
The arrest and ouster of Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir has brought his 30-year reign to an end. In the military statement read out by Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf, the phrase used was the “toppling of the regime.” He added that Bashir had been arrested and was in a safe place. According to media reports, a large hoard of cash was found at the home of Bashir that included millions in US dollars, euros and other foreign currencies.Investigations are ongoing against Bashir on charges of money laundering and illegal possession of large sums of foreign currency. Protests erupted against Bashir’s regime a few months ago over a government decision to end subsidies and a subsequent sharp rise in bread prices. The unrest quickly escalated into nationwide demonstrations in a...
