Sino-US trade war hots up
Given President Donald Trump’s reluctance to read any briefing that takes up more than one side of a piece of paper and his addiction to sending short tweets, it is unlikely that he himself wrote much of his best-selling book “The Art of the Deal”. But whoever put together his thoughts produced a work that ought to tell those who come up against Trump a great deal about what he is going to do next. The Chinese, however, work to different criteria and indeed a different time span. Even if the leadership in Beijing studied the book, they probably concluded that the man in the White House is a loud-mouthed vulgarian entirely lacking in subtlety and with no appreciation for the very Chinese value of “Face” - the protection of all-important reputation. The increasingly...

Sino-US trade war hots up

It is the principle that matters
The other day on my way home, I stopped at a local supermarket. This particular supermarket was overflowing with foodstuff that was jamming every aisle and making navigation difficult in the tightly crowded lanes. The supermarket itself was dressed up for the occasion with the staff decked out in maroon blazers with dark pleated trousers. The trolleys or grocery carts were new and shiny with a hint of space-age design. The ambiance inside gave one the feeling of being in a wedding hall and not a market. After making my selections and paying for my purchases, I made my way home. The following day, I reached in the fridge for a container of ricotta cheese, one of my purchases of the previous day. On opening it, I noticed some green mold on the surface of the cheese. It was upsetting....

Bluster in the face of failure
Boeing, the world’s largest aircraft maker, is in a serious jam. On Thursday civil aviation regulators from Brazil, Canada, China, and EU will join US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) officials to review Boeing’s efforts to fix the software on it 737 Max aircraft, two of which have crashed in Indonesia and Ethiopia killing 346 passengers and crew. All 400 of the 737 Max aircraft Boeing has sold from an original order book of over 5,000, are currently grounded. Given the US lawsuits piling up against it not simply from bereaved relatives but also airlines facing massive losses, it was not surprising Boeing was slow to admit that the cause of both crashes was almost certainly the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). Thanks to a false sensor reading, this...

Confronting Iran: What’s next?
The hotheads in Tehran have done it again! After attacking four oil tankers off the coast of the Emirates near the Strait of Hormuz and oil installations in Riyadh and Yanbu, their militias have bombed the US embassy in Baghdad. Large amounts of Hezbollah-made illegal drugs have been found in pilgrimage buses coming from Lebanon. What’s next? It is not a secret that the Revolutionary Guards command hundreds of thousands of followers in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, in addition to hundreds of sleeping and active cells in the Gulf states. As usual, the mullahs avoid direct confrontation. In the last four decades, they have built powerful bases inside Arab neighbors. These include Sunni and Shiite terrorist organizations and groups like Al-Qaeda, Daesh, Al-Nusra, Al-Jihad...

The winner in 2020: Trump!
The 2020 US presidential election will not be resolved for more than a year, but the race has started, and more than 20 Democratic candidates, along with one Republican and candidates from other parties have announced their intent to challenge US President Donald Trump. However, it seems that at the moment the road is paved for a great victory for Trump due to the impressive performance of the US economy. US unemployment is at its lowest level in more than 49 years, job creation continues month by month, billions of dollars of investment flow uninterrupted into the US economy, US corporate earnings are positive and the dollar continues to dominate the world. Experts state that Trump’s firm decision to reduce taxes to companies and investors has had a positive effect on the economy....

Is it war or just a show of strength?
There is no doubt that the plan to deter Iran is on the table of US President Donald Trump. It includes the military option which will be ferocious. In a remarkable development, Saudi Arabia and some other GCC countries have agreed to an American proposal to redeploy US forces in Arabian Gulf waters so as to warn the Mullahs against any attempt to start a military escalation, attack Gulf countries or jeopardize American interests. The United States has ordered its non-essential government staff to leave Iraq. Holland has halted its diplomatic mission in Baghdad and Germany has suspended military training in Iraq. Britain has increased its readiness and warned its employees to be more careful, and some oil companies have evacuated their staff. All of this is because of the rising tension...

Eurovision ruse
The just concluded Eurovision song contest rarely passes off without some kind of controversy. This year the issue was the location of the event itself: Tel Aviv. While Israel was trying to show off its sunny Mediterranean beaches, it was also using Eurovision as a cover as it strives to escape from its responsibility for the tragedy called the occupation. All the singing and dancing at Eurovision could not hide this ugly reality. Although Israel is not in Europe, it hosted Eurovision for two reasons. Last year the contest was won by an Israeli singer and because the winning nation gets to host the following year’s contest, this year Eurovision set up shop in Tel Aviv. Secondly, Israel qualified for the competition because the Israel Broadcasting Authority is a member of the...

Israeli disinformation
Fake accounts have proliferated on Facebook, Twitter and other major online platforms with the aim of swaying political opinion in many countries and leaving the companies scrambling to respond. The latest source of these fake accounts: Israel. Facebook has said it detected dozens of its accounts that were engaging in what it called “coordinated inauthentic behavior”, another way of saying election interference and other forms of public manipulation via news and social media. This is the first time Facebook says it’s detected such activity from Israel, and Facebook even names an Israeli commercial entity, Archimedes Group, that it says was behind the behavior. Facebook has now banned Archimedes Group, purging 65 Israeli accounts, 161 pages, dozens of groups and four Instagram...

Dead woman walking
UK Prime Minister Theresa May cuts a tragic figure. She inherited a Conservative majority from David Cameron when he resigned after Britain voted to leave the European Union. Promising voters that “Brexit means Brexit”, May called a snap election, to strengthen her hand in leave negotiations in Brussels. It was political folly of the first order. Her party lost its overall majority and could only stay in government with the support of ten truculent MPs from Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party. EU negotiators were never going to make it easy for the UK to become the first member state to break away. They trashed May’s proposal that future trade relations should be discussed alongside the British departure deal. They forced her to accept a $47 billion exit bill....

Food for thought
Food is history. Food is culture. But food is also political, sociological, psychological, philosophical and probably many other things as well. And with the Ramadan season upon us, it seems like now is a good time to revisit our relationship with food, which is one of the oldest relationships in the history of humankind. There is no doubt that food brings people together and facilitates conversation. After all, its value is not only nutritious but extents to building a community, or any bond for that matter, because it is what people have in common. To eat is to be open to the other person and the blessings of the world. That is why food constitutes an important element in any travel experience because to experience a culture, it is important that one experiences its food as well, to be...
