Ebola rears its terrible head again
When the largest-ever outbreak of the deadly Ebola disease struck West Africa in 2013, there was worldwide panic. The medical response mirrored the earlier irruption of Avian Flu except that tackling Ebola involved far more intensive treatment of victims, by medical personal who all too often risked and sometimes lost their own lives in caring for them. And there was another important factor that almost certainly influenced the global reaction to Avian Flu. In the end, influenza is a common condition occurring regularly every winter. Though Avian Flu was alarming, treatments became available. It was an inconvenience rather than a threat to life. Few people now remember that in the three years from 1918, more people died from the so-called Spanish Flu pandemic than during the...

Woman on the road
Who would have thought that playing Nintendo Mario Kart as a kid would come in handy on the streets of Riyadh. Knowing how to drive with a 360° view at all times, to swerve, brake, speed up then slow down to get from point A to B among the other racers. Now saying this I do enjoy driving, I just use a more colorful vocabulary and gestures than I have before. As I realized to drive you need to be a mathematician, to take that 360° view so as to measure how much sq2/distance is required between you and the car in front of you to allow ample space for safety but not enough that another car jumps in, essentially forcing you to slow down to add more safety space until you seem to be going backwards rather than forward. Now my extended safety distance is usually determined by the severity...

How to win an argument with Iran
We have an Arab proverb that explains the strategy of nutty children: “He hit me and cried, then outran me to complain!” I remember this every time I face an Iranian or Qatari counterpart in a debate. Their strategy is simple: They attack you first with whatever they are accused of. Before you list your grievances and their misbehavior, they use your own list against you. By the time you finish your defense, the program time is over, and you are left in the dust in the defendant’s corner. My strategy is to start with my list before answering theirs. Depending on whether the program host is professionally unbiased, I usually manage to turn the tables on them. Thanks to the new global awareness of what is really happening and who is guilty of what, my task is becoming...

Consensus politics hit in EU elections
The loudest message from Sunday’s European election results is that opinion in the continent is polarizing. It is going too far to say that the political center ground is being hollowed out, but voters in the 28 member states have punished long dominant centrist parties by supporting anti-establishment candidates. The 751-seat European parliament has long been dominated by three out of eight main groups. The center-right European People’s Party bloc remains the largest and has traditionally formed a grand alliance with center-left Socialist and Democrat blocs. However, all three lost MEPs and have thus forfeited their absolute majority. They will need to look for support from the Liberals and the Greens who were significant winners in this election. The other main victors in...

War clouds send Iran’s mullah regime into begging for a solution
‘Will a war break out?’ Is this the most precise question or the next: ‘When will the war break out?’This is the question everyone, especially in the Mid-East, is asking. There are two narratives: The first is preferred by US President Donald Trump’s Administration because it believes Iran has ill intentions and the Americans have detected Iranian preparations to carry out an imminent attack on US targets. This has caused Washington to send big military reinforcements to the region, revise its military plans and redeploy its forces in the Arabian Gulf waters with the consent of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. This is a clear message to Tehran that any attack against any US target or its allies or both will have a crushing military response. The second narrative puts the blame...

War clouds send Iran’s mullah regime into begging for a solution

Deal and stick!
Donald Trump is not a politician in the traditional sense, nor is he a classic businessman. He is known as a man of “deals”. In his book The Art of the Deal, he outlines his approach and in foreign policy he is always looking for a deal without taking into account the traditional strategic principles of previous US administrations. Confirmation of this is the deal of the economic agreement with Canada and Mexico, looking for a deal with North Korea, and looking for the biggest deal with China to force it to take a more equitable position, in Trump’s view, in its trade with America. Now that Trump has canceled the nuclear deal between America and its allies with Iran, the US president has approved a series of painful economic sanctions in an attempt to deter the Iranian regime from...

More is not merrier
While some national football associations as well as FIFA President Gianni Infantino will no doubt be disappointed at the news that plans to expand the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams, up from 32, have been abandoned, many others should welcome it. While it is set that the 2026 World Cup will be enlarged to 48 teams, Infantino had toyed with the notion of bringing forward the increase to the 2022 tournament in Qatar. But meeting a few days ago, FIFA, world football’s governing body, said that after a “thorough and comprehensive consultation process” the change “could not be made now”. That conclusion should come as a major relief. The change would have required Qatar to share hosting duties with other countries in the region, however, at this stage, Qatar cannot co-host with...

Theresa May
Brexit leads to the exit
Even though Brexit dominated her time at 10 Downing Street, Theresa May could not in the end deliver on her pledge to steer Britain out of the European Union, leaving her successor to try to finish the job. The problem is whether May’s replacement will have better luck in delivering what she could not. In her almost three years in office, May, who said she will quit as Conservative leader on June 7, tried valiantly to deliver on the will of the people’s referendum and take Britain out of the EU while suffering as little damage as possible. But it soon emerged that unraveling 45 years of relations with the bloc was more complicated than previously thought and fraught with potholes. The quest that consumed May’s tenure as prime minister began well enough. Although she was...

Modi’s new mandate
AS his surprise landslide win became clear on Thursday Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that his second five-year term would see an inclusive government. This sentiment is common to most newly-victorious politicians. Nevertheless, it must be hoped that Modi recognizes that over the last five years, extremists in his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have fostered dangerous divisions, particularly with the Muslim community. Indians need to define themselves purely as citizens of their great country. A unified India can take pride in its economic and technological achievements and look to advance to claim its place as an economic superpower. Investors were certainly pleased by the BJP’s unexpected triumph. On Monday after exit polls predicted an easy Modi victory, the Bombay...

The countless blessings that the Creator bestows
In this blessed month, I get overwhelmed when pondering the blessings Allah has bestowed on me though I did not deserve them. So I was not upset when diagnosed with incurable, slowly developing blood cancer. I have already crossed a Canadian male’s life expectancy – 81. Who can expect to emulate the Prophet Noah (peace be on him), who lived to be 900? Who would even want to, given that old age brings helplessness, pain and dependence on others? We are fortunate that my mother and mother-in-law lived with us till they passed away. My wife Nishat and mother-in-law watched TV in the evening, with Nishat doing the translation. My mother’s passion was to learn English and I spent the evenings teaching her. She could understand when someone talked to her slowly in English, but she...
