Is Saudi Arabia going to seek its rights?
OkazFINALLY the Washington Post revealed the mystery behind a sponsored campaign against the Kingdom through a series of articles written by the late Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi and its direct connection with Qatar Foundation International, which was supervised by Maggie Mitchell, a political, media and intelligence agent. It was also revealed that she was directly connected to that institution. The Washington Post was behind the fall of Richard Nixon from the US presidency after the Watergate scandal. It is hard to believe that this giant media institution was misused for more than a year without the management knowing the background of Khashoggi's articles, their main objectives and who was behind them.Of course, they knew all these but they chose to reveal the details after...

Saving the nation’s print media
OkazIn the past two years, Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman has contributed a number of national initiatives that have activated different sectors of the national economy. These initiatives involved the selection and financial support of qualified teams of experts that have worked to overcome the challenges facing some economic sectors. However, little has been done to address the difficult challenges facing the nation’s print media, which is facing an uncertain future and is threatened with closing down. A number of newspapers have announced directly or indirectly that if something is not done soon to address their problems, they may have to cease publication. The projects and vision of the Crown Prince are the only way to save the print media. Financial support and domestic and foreign...

2019: What lies ahead!
Now that we have entered 2019, it is natural to attempt to analyze the information that we have to determine what the new year holds in store for us.America will remain a major driver of events, as it is the center of influence on the world’s politics and economy, but it will continue to face internal political polarization. President Donald Trump will enter into a violent confrontation with Congress, especially as investigations of thorny and inflammatory issues intensify. The independent Mueller investigation extending to members of Trump’s family will have a negative impact on the ability of the president to devote himself fulltime to politics and to accomplish what he promised during his election campaignChina will experience an economic slowdown and will focus its attention on...

The ‘Occupying Power’
For outgoing US Ambassador Nikki Haley to call the United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “corrupt” and a “cesspool” was a harsh assessment. Coming one day after the US and Israel officially quit UNESCO, Haley’s social media tirade was also ironic. UNESCO was co-founded by the US during the founding of the UN after World War II to foster peace and protect ancient historical sites. This latter role has been constantly undermined by Israel. Israel has been severely criticized for its failure to fulfill its legal responsibilities with respect to holy sites in Jerusalem. It was specifically charged with denying access to Muslim worshippers and not taking adequate steps to curb the campaign of settler extremists to assert Jewish claims in the Al-Aqsa Mosque...

The ‘Occupying Power’

The Houthis must be dealt with forcefully
OkazWe said it before and we say it again, we should never assume good intentions from the outlaw militia Houthis who are occupying Yemen with the full support of the Iranian National Guard and the Lebanese gang of Hezbollah. All previous attempts to reach a peaceful solution to the Yemeni problem have failed because the Houthis do not want any political solution. To be more specific, they do not have the power to make a decision because they only do what they are told by Tehran. They are only Yemeni in name; their allegiance is to Iran. This is the worst betrayal of the Yemeni people in its long Arab history. Before the talks in Sweden, the Houthi group showed signs of stalling, which was an indication that these talks would end like previous ones. The United Nations insisted on these talks...

My predictions for 2019
OkazARAB satellite channels, especially the Lebanese ones, hosted a large number of astrologers and soothsayers who usually appear around this time every year to sell their illusions. Aside from targeting simple people, these clairvoyants flatter politicians with sweet predictions while they strike fear in the hearts of celebrities with premonitions of imminent disaster. They throw baits to the famous personalities who get in touch with them to obtain further information about their bright or dark future. This way, these people can easily extort money from the famous and powerful.I must admit that these fortune tellers are extremely smart and they have good talent in analyzing data and drawing conclusions. This makes their predictions come true oftentimes. Simple people who believe in the...

Boycott Israel and you’re fired
The new 116th US Congress has much work to do: ending a two-week partial government shutdown, passing bills on healthcare, infrastructure and deciding whether to impeach President Donald Trump on perceived charges of obstruction of justice. However, the House of Representatives should put one more item on its to-do list: annulling a law that states that American citizens must promise not to boycott Israel or else be fired from their job.One recent axing happened to a child language specialist in Texas who was told she could no longer work for her school which provides support for Arabic-speaking children after refusing to sign an oath promising that she “will not” boycott Israel. This new job requirement is the result of an anti-Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions bill that the Texas...

Is space too big, even for China?
The landing of a Chinese spacecraft on the dark side of the moon throws a great deal of light upon the advanced state of Chinese technology. Even the America’s NASA described this first landing on the far side of the moon as an “impressive achievement”. The challenge has always been that there can be no direct communications between a space vehicle and the earth. The Chinese have overcome the problem by using a specially-launched satellite to relay signals between their mission control and the craft. The unmanned Chang’e-4 module made a perfect landing in the scientifically intriguing Von Kármán crater in a region thought to have been hit by a huge meteorite early in the moon’s history. The impact may have driven the object deep into the moon, throwing up part of its inner...

A house in two days
WE all have seen the Ministry of Housing build a house, to be specific putting together the pieces of a house, in two days. This was a nice effort but at the same time it cannot be described as an achievement. I am not trying to undermine the efforts of the Ministry of Housing, but I cannot call it an achievement because the construction method was being used for many years elsewhere. Many of the government buildings were built that way many decades ago.It is not an achievement for another reason. Let us assume that the ministry was the one to invent this type of construction on Planet Earth but the problem of people searching for houses cropped up in Saudi Arabia not because of the time required for constructing one. If it were so, then I believe people would accept the idea of building a...

No matter what it’s called, knowledge is power!
The name has changed over time from distance learning to online, electronic, virtual and digital learning. The objective, however, has stayed the same; that is, to continue learning, developing and advancing one’s education. Distance learning may be a vanishing designation as evolving technology closes the distance between learner and instructor. However, it is now never too late for those who missed the chance to sit in a classroom and pursue higher education. Individuals can obtain a desired diploma or degree from their web-connected devices and study subjects not offered at local universities. World-class universities and institutions are awarding advanced degrees at bachelor, master and doctoral levels in a variety of online majors.Still, obtaining an online degree is not as easy an...
