Riyadh Airports to launch major terminal transformation plan in early 2026

The operational shift will redesignate Terminal 5 for foreign carriers, Terminals 3 and 4 for domestic travel, and Terminals 1 and 2 for international flights by national airlines

RIYADH — King Khalid International Airport, operated by Riyadh Airports Company, is preparing to implement a major strategic transformation plan — the first of its kind since the airport opened more than 40 years ago.

The rollout is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026 to align with the rapid development of the Saudi capital.

The initiative is one of the airport’s most significant development projects and supports the strategic vision for Riyadh’s airports, introducing comprehensive operational and organizational enhancements.

As part of the plan, a large operational reallocation between terminals will be carried out after redesigns were completed to preserve the airport’s original architectural identity.

Under the new arrangement, terminal 5 will be dedicated to international flights for foreign airlines, terminals 3 and 4 will be designated for domestic flights, and terminals 1 and 2 will continue to serve international flights operated by national carriers.

This major reorganization is expected to increase terminal capacity, improve passenger movement between facilities, reduce waiting times, and enhance the overall traveler experience and service quality.

A final date for the operational shift will be announced once all airport stakeholders and airlines confirm full readiness.

Riyadh Airports, in coordination with the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Airports Holding Company, emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve passenger experience at the Kingdom’s capital airport. It includes a series of development measures aimed at boosting operational efficiency and elevating service standards for travelers.
