Saudi Gazette report
RIYADH — Travelers arriving in or departing from Saudi Arabia through its land, air and sea ports are required to obtain prior authorization to carry with them controlled medications, effective from Saturday, Nov. 1. This measure is part of the Kingdom's commitment to facilitating travel of passengers suffering from diseases and ensuring the safety of their travel procedures.

A few months ago, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) outlined the procedures for obtaining a clearance permit for controlled drugs containing narcotics and psychotropic substances in the possession of passengers arriving in or departing from the Kingdom.

The regulations prohibit the entry of any medications containing narcotics or psychotropic substances except under strict conditions. This procedure is part of a comprehensive national strategy to protect public health and regulate the movement of controlled medications in accordance with local laws and international standards.

As per the government decision, travelers are prohibited from bringing in medications containing controlled substances unless they have obtained prior official clearance through the designated channels. Travelers are required to declare the medications and provide the necessary documentation. This measure is part of the relevant authorities' efforts to regulate the entry and exit of medications of a sensitive nature and ensure the safety of related health procedures.

It is noteworthy that the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) previously clarified the steps and procedures for obtaining personal clearance for medications containing narcotics or psychotropic substances in the possession of travelers arriving in or departing from the Kingdom.

SFDA stated that all information related to controlled drug permits is available through its Controlled Drug System (CDS) at https://cds.sfda.gov.sa. Travelers can now easily apply for a permit through the CDS platform by creating a personal account, submitting an electronic clearance permit request with the patient's details and trip information, and uploading supporting documents like a prescription, medical report, and proof of identity.

Travelers can also add multiple medications by providing accurate details, including the trade name, active ingredient, drug concentration, dosage form, and quantity or pack size. Applicants must include documents that prove the medical need for the medication, whether it is for the traveler or another patient.

The applicant must agree to the terms and conditions, and then submit the application. Travelers can also track the status of the application, which is clearly classified as "Submitted," "Completed," "Rejected," or "Incomplete." The applicant can take the printout of the permit once the application is completed.
