RIYADH — Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Frahan lambasted using freedom of expression as a tool for disseminating hatred and cultural confrontation as burning Qur’an repeated continuously.

He said that freedom of expression represents a moral value that spreads respect and coexistence among peoples.

Prince Faisal made his remarks at the emergency discussion session in the Human Rights Council on the incident of burning the Holy Qur’an on Tuesday.

He said that the incidents of burning copies of the Qur’an contribute to inciting hatred, violence, and hostility. “These acts exploit freedom of opinion and expression, in a way incompatible with human rights.”

“Global culture of tolerance and peace can only be sustained through concerted international efforts to promote the principles of respect and acceptance of religions in all societies,” he added.

Prince Faisal renewed Saudi Arabia's strong condemnation of the incidents of burning copies of the Qur’an.

He stressed that these acts cannot be accepted with any justification, and that they incite hatred and racism, and directly contradict with international efforts seeking to spread the values of tolerance.

He said: “The Kingdom is looking forward to adopting the proposed draft resolution “combating religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence” in accordance with human rights.
