The Gaza conflict’s forgotten shipping crew held hostage in the Red Sea
MANILA — Hope is fading for the imminent return of the international crew of the cargo ship hijacked by the Houthis in November, with a senior Filipino diplomat saying he does not expect a release until the war in Gaza is over, while the Houthis say the fate of the sailors is now in Hamas’ hands.A Houthi-owned helicopter hijacked the Galaxy Leader cargo ship on November 19 in the Red Sea, as rebel gunmen laid siege to the vessel and took the ship’s crew of 17 Filipinos, two Bulgarians, three Ukrainians, two Mexicans and a Romanian hostage. It’s now been more than 116 days since the hijacking, and according to a senior Filipino government official, there is no indication that the Houthis are open to releasing them until the hostilities end.“There’s really not much that can be...

BP and UAE's NewMed suspend $2 billion gas deal in Israel as Gaza war drags on
LONDON — BP and an oil company owned by the United Arab Emirates have shelved talks to buy a 50% stake in Israel’s leading natural gas producer, judging the $2 billion deal too risky as the war in Gaza rages.NewMed Energy said Wednesday that all three companies had agreed to “suspend discussions” on the deal “due to the uncertainty created by the external environment.”BP (BP) and Abu Dhabi’s state oil company Adnoc had “reiterated... interest in the proposed transaction,” it added in a statement, without detailing the conditions under which talks might resume.“There can be no certainty that discussions will resume or that an agreement will be reached in the future, nor as to the terms of an agreement should one be reached,” NewMed Energy said.BP declined to comment...

Israel says it plans 'humanitarian islands' for Gaza displaced
JERUSALEM — Israel's military has said it plans to move displaced Palestinians in Gaza to what it called "humanitarian islands" in the middle of the strip, ahead of any offensive in Rafah. Some 1.4 million people are sheltering in the southern city after fleeing the fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas in northern and central areas. It is not clear what the "islands" will look like, or how they will operate. But the military suggested that aid and temporary housing would be provided. No timeframe has yet been given about when the operation could happen. The UN and US have warned that a full-scale assault in Rafah could be disastrous.Israel has repeatedly signalled its need for such an operation, insisting Hamas cannot be fully removed in Gaza without targeting...

Aid airdrops into Gaza slammed by humanitarian organizations
GAZA — Twenty-four leading human rights organizations have criticized deliveries of aid into Gaza by air and sea, claiming they are “not an alternative" to land.In a joint press release, the NGOs — including Amnesty, Action Aid International and Oxfam — urged states to focus on achieving a permanent ceasefire and “safe and unhindered” humanitarian access through land crossings into the Palestinian enclave.“States cannot hide behind airdrops and efforts to open a maritime corridor to create the illusion that they are doing enough to support the needs in Gaza," the 25 NGOs wrote."Their primary responsibility is to prevent atrocity crimes from unfolding and apply effective political pressure to end the relentless bombardment and the restrictions which prevent the...

UN aid convoy uses new land route from Israel to reach north Gaza
GAZA — The UN says a new land route has been used to deliver food to northern Gaza for the first time in three weeks. The Israeli military said six lorries from the World Food Programme crossed via a gate in the Gaza border fence.Tuesday night's delivery was "part of a pilot to prevent Hamas from taking over the aid", it added. It comes amid global pressure on Israel to allow more access to the Palestinian territory for aid amid a looming famine as it continues its war on Hamas.A boat carrying 200 tonnes of food aid for distribution by a charity also set sail from Cyprus on Tuesday, inaugurating a new maritime corridor into the Palestinian territory. It is expected to arrive near Gaza on Thursday. However, it has been widely pointed out that access by road remains the quickest...

Human rights groups sue Denmark over arms exports to Israel
COPENHAGEN — A group of the world’s most prominent human rights organizations is suing Danish authorities over the continued exports of arms to Israel even as more than 30,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in Gaza by the Israeli military. The local branches of Oxfam, Amnesty, Action Aid and the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq have announced a lawsuit against the Danish National Police and the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Their action asks Danish authorities to stop Denmark’s arms exports to Israel on the grounds that there is “a clear risk that weapons and military equipment that Denmark, directly and indirectly, exports to Israel will be used to commit serious crimes against civilians in Gaza”.According to the group, this would represent a...

EU says Israel is using starvation as a weapon
NEW YORK — Starvation is being used as a weapon of war in Gaza, the EU's foreign policy chief has claimed.Josep Borrell described the lack of aid entering the territory as a "manmade" disaster.A Spanish ship carrying desperately needed food supplies has left Cyprus for Gaza, but the UN says this cannot replace the delivery of aid by land.Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has meanwhile vowed to press on with an offensive in southern Gaza. The quickest, most effective way to get aid into the territory is by road, but aid agencies say Israeli restrictions mean a fraction of what is needed is getting in.Attention has instead shifted towards alternative routes including sea and air drops.Israel says it is not to blame for Gaza's food shortages as it is allowing...

Israeli police use batons to push back worshipers from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque
JERUSALEM — Crowds of Palestinian worshippers were allowed in to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, after the first day of Ramadan fasting. On the previous night Israeli forces beat back groups of people trying to access the site. The congregation at the Al-Aqsa compound on midday Monday was far smaller than in previous years. At some entrances, Israeli forces could be seen turning some worshippers away, citing unspecified security concerns. At one entrance, however, worshippers could be seen filing through without being stopped. The compound is the third holiest site in Islam. The site has long been a major flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tensions have soared in recent years as Israel has allowed increasing numbers of Jews to visit the compound....

LARNACA — A ship taking almost 200 tonnes of food to Gaza left a port in Cyprus early on Tuesday, in a pilot project to open a new sea route of aid to a population on the brink of famine. The charity ship Open Arms was seen sailing out of Larnaca port in Cyprus, towing a barge containing flour, rice and protein. The ship belongs to a Spanish charity of the same name.Exactly where it plans to dock when it reaches Gaza has not been disclosed. The mission, mostly funded by the United Arab Emirates, is being organized by US based charity World Central Kitchen (WCK), while the Spanish charity supplies the ship."Our goal is to establish a maritime highway of boats and barges stocked with millions of meals continuously headed towards Gaza," said WCK founder Jose Andres and chief...
