EU democracy is under attack by mercenary spyware, claims new report
BRUSSELS — EU democracy is under attack by the increasing use of mercenary spyware that violates privacy rights, silences opposition and the free press, and shields governments from public scrutiny, a new report by a committee of the European Parliament has said.Once installed in a device, spyware allows the invader to conduct real-time surveillance, find passwords and sensitive files, track locations and plant fabricated evidence. It is usually installed through a malicious app or website link and leaves very few traces for its detection.Pegasus, developed by the Israeli-based company NSO Group, and Predator, a less sophisticated version, are the most well known brands across Europe. The report, presented as a draft version on Tuesday, accuses EU countries of practicing “omertà,”...

Cardinal Ricard among 11 French bishops accused of abuse
PARIS — French Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard has been named by the Church as one of 11 serving or former bishops accused of cases linked to abuse. In a statement, the cardinal said he had abused a 14-year-old girl when he was a parish priest 35 years ago and would now withdraw from his functions.A year ago, a panel found evidence of thousands of pedophiles operating in the French Catholic Church for decades. All 11 accused face either prosecution or disciplinary action in the Church. The latest revelations came during the French bishops’ conference in Lourdes in southwestern France.Archbishop Eric de Moulins-Beaufort told reporters the 11 included a former bishop of Créteil, Michel Santier, who retired last year after he was accused of committing sexual abuse two decades earlier. Some are...

Polish leader blames low birthrate on women using alcohol
WARSAW — A women’s rights group in Poland has urged people to demonstrate after the country’s ruling party leader claimed that Poland’s low birthrate is partly caused by young women drinking too much alcohol.Opposition politicians, activists and celebrities accused Jaroslaw Kaczynski, a 73-year-old bachelor, of being out of touch. They also argue that Kaczynski, the most powerful politician in Poland since 2015, is himself partly responsible for the low birthrate in the central European nation of 38 million people. In particular, critics point to increased restrictions on abortion that have discouraged some women from seeking to get pregnant. Others note the difficulty that young people have in raising families amid inflation that is reaching nearly 18%.A women’s rights group...

Greek supreme court calls for probe into wiretapping scandal
ATHENS — Greece’s supreme court has called for an investigation into a wiretapping case that has rocked the country for months, following revelations that more political personalities were illegally wiretapped. The left-leaning weekly Documento claimed in a report on Sunday that former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras as well as the current ministers for foreign affairs, finance, development, labor and tourism were victims of wiretapping.Vangelis Marinakis, a prominent mogul with media and shipping businesses as well as two football clubs, was also reportedly wiretapped. The weekly, which has links to the left-wing opposition party Syriza, said it had information from “two people who had a key role in the surveillance”.The newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Kostas Vaxevanis, said he would...

Lab-grown blood given to people in world-first clinical trial
LONDON — Blood that has been grown in a laboratory has been put into people in a world-first clinical trial, UK researchers said.Tiny amounts — equivalent to a couple of spoonfuls — are being tested to see how it performs inside the body. The bulk of blood transfusions will always rely on people regularly rolling up their sleeve to donate. But the ultimate goal is to manufacture vital, but ultra-rare, blood groups that are hard to get hold of.These are necessary for people who depend on regular blood transfusions for conditions such as sickle cell anemia. If the blood is not a precise match then the body starts to reject it and the treatment fails. This level of tissue matching goes beyond the well-known A, B, AB and O blood groups.Professor Ashley Toye, from the University of Bristol,...

Kyiv mayor warns of winter without heat, water or electricity
KYIV — The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has warned residents they must prepare for the worst this winter if Russia keeps striking the country’s energy infrastructure — and that means possibly having no electricity, water, or heat in the freezing cold winter months.“We are doing everything to avoid this. But let’s be frank, our enemies are doing everything for the city to be without heat, without electricity, without water supply, in general, so we all die,” Klitschko told Ukrainian state media.“The future of the country and the future of each of us depends on how prepared we are for different situations,” he added.Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelensky said late on Sunday that about 4.5 million people were without electricity. He called on Ukrainians to endure the...

Glasgow set to become the UK’s first ‘feminist city’
GLASGOW — On Oct. 27, Glasgow City Council unanimously backed a motion stating that women should be at the heart of all aspect of city planning, becoming the first city in the UK to embrace ‘feminist urbanism’.Feminist urbanism advocates for a type of urban planning that promotes inclusivity and puts the needs of women, non-binary and genderfluid people at the forefront of the way we think of the urban landscape. Because, perhaps unsurprisingly, our cities are far from being gender-neutral.Scholars of feminist urbanism argue that men have historically been in charge of designing the cities we live in, and they did so thinking of their own needs and habits, often overlooking or sidelining issues of safety and accessibility affecting women and sexual and gender minorities. The cities we...
