Zelensky to open Munich Security Conference with Russia banned for the first time in 20 years
KYIV —The leaders of France, Germany and the UK will join dozens of others Friday at a security conference in Germany to discuss the next steps in supporting Ukraine as the Russian invasion nears its one-year anniversary. For the first time in two decades, Russian leaders were not invited to the Munich Security Conference, a yearly gathering of world leaders, politicians and security experts, which is set to open with a video address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.US Vice President Kamala Harris is returning to the conference a year after she shared warnings, just days before the invasion began, that Russia was about to attack its neighbor.Harris will meet French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of...

Western allies including the European Union have this month reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine as Russia’s war in the country nears the one-year mark.
‘We could be faster’ with support for Ukraine, MEPs say
BRUSSELS — Western allies including the European Union have this month reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine as Russia’s war in the country nears the one-year mark. But many, including EU chiefs Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel, have also conceded that more could have been done and still needs to be done to ensure Ukraine can defend itself and eventually win the war.MEPs largely agree.Like the vast majority of the European population, EU lawmakers approve of what the bloc has done so far.The EU has so far spent €67 billion in military, humanitarian and macro-financial assistance and rolled out nine packages of sanctions against Russia to cripple its economy and ability to finance and wage war.For lawmakers, the unity displayed by the 27 EU countries is particularly...

Russian military reserves ‘significantly depleted’, analysts say
KYIV —Russia’s costly military campaign in Ukraine has likely “significantly depleted Russian equipment and manpower reserves necessary to sustain a successful large-scale offensive in eastern Ukraine”, said the Institute for the Study of War.The International Institute for Strategic Studies reported that Russia lost about 50 percent of its T-72B and T-72B3M tanks.Ukraine’s supply of Western weapons and material means it likely continues to have a window of opportunity to initiate large-scale counteroffensives over the next few months, analysts say.But how effectively it can do so will depend on the speed and scale at which the West provides it with the necessary material, particularly tanks and armored vehicles, it added. — Euronews

Turkiye’s oldest mosque and world’s oldest church destroyed by earthquake
ANTAKYA — In the ancient Turkish city of Antakya, the oldest church in the world and the oldest mosque in the country were reduced to rubble after two massive earthquakes hit in just 8 hours. The domes and walls of the 1st century Antioch Orthodox Church, known as Antakya Church, and the 7th century Habib-I Nejjar Mosque have almost completely collapsed.“Unfortunately our church was destroyed after the earthquake. All its walls have fallen down and it is not in the condition for prayers,” said Sertac Paul Bozkurt, a member of the board of Antioch Orthodox Church.“Sadly Antakya is in great trouble. As the community here, of course, we are deeply sad, we are in great despair. We have big losses. We lost around 30-35 people from our church community.”“This is the oldest church, the...

Serbian nationalists protest against Western plan to normalize ties with breakaway Kosovo
BELGRADE — Hundreds of Serbian nationalists rallied in Belgrade on Wednesday calling for President Aleksandar Vučić to reject a Western plan to normalize ties with neighboring Kosovo and pull out of negotiations. The right-wing protesters shouted “treason” and carried banners reading “no surrender”, as they blocked traffic before gathering near the Serbian presidential building in central Belgrade. The protesters were also strongly pro-Russian, one banner read: “Betrayal of Kosovo is a betrayal of Russia!”Serbian media reported that one group pushed through metal fences towards the entrance at the end of the rally but was prevented by riot police from reaching the door. The protest comes amid efforts by US and European Union officials to mediate a solution for the...

Lukashenko warns Belarus will join Russia in war if attacked
MINSK — Few people know Vladimir Putin quite as well as Alexander Lukashenko does. The authoritarian leader of Belarus is a firm Kremlin ally and backer of what Putin refers to as the “special military operation” — what most of the world calls Russia’s war in Ukraine.Since his full-scale invasion of Ukraine a year ago, Putin hasn’t sat down with Western journalists. But Thursday in Minsk, Lukashenko took questions from a small group of foreign media, including the BBC.“Last year you allowed your country to be used as a staging ground for Russia’s invasion,” I reminded Lukashenko. “Are you prepared to do so again?”“Yes, I’m ready,” he replied. “I’m ready to provide [territory] again. I’m also ready to wage war, alongside the Russians, from the territory of...

Russian balloons over Kyiv in new wave of attacks
KYIV — Ukraine’s army has said Russia fired 36 cruise missiles on Thursday, a day after six apparently radar-reflecting balloons were spotted over Kyiv. The missiles fired from land and sea killed a woman and hit critical infrastructure, officials said.Ukraine noted there had been a change in Russian tactics, in an apparent reference to the balloons above Kyiv. Most of the balloons were shot down, Kyiv’s military said, adding that they were being propelled by wind power.Images circulating on social media show an unsophisticated design, with a radar-reflecting, cross-shaped structure trailing under the balloon suspended by a line.Balloons with reflectors have also been spotted over the eastern region of Dnipropetrovsk in recent days.“These objects could carry radar reflectors and...

High Representative Josep Borrell said the EU sanctions on Russia were like a “slow-acting but certain poison.”
Keeping EU unity over the Ukraine war ‘has not always been easy,’ Borrell admits
STRASBOURG — Forging and maintaining political unity among the 27 members of the European Union in order to stand up together against Russia’s illegal and brutal invasion of Ukraine “has not always been easy,” Josep Borrell, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, has admitted. His comments were a reflection on the unprecedented and radical measures the EU has taken over the past year, many of which entailed prolonged, heated and down-to-the-wire negotiations.“It hasn’t always been easy, but so far we have managed” to keep unity, Borrell told Euronews on Wednesday after addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg.“Some (member states) complained, others disagreed, but in the end, we maintained the unity we needed.”Until now, the EU has slapped the Kremlin with nine...

Can ‘earthquake diplomacy’ help NATO membership chances for Sweden and Finland?
BRUSSELS — In the hours after two massive earthquakes hit southern Turkey, the well-oiled wheels of humanitarian assistance started turning in Sweden and Finland. The Nordic nations are locked in something of a stalemate with Ankara over their NATO memberships — as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan holds up the process, demanding that Stockholm and Helsinki meet strict criteria before moving forward with ratification. So could ‘earthquake diplomacy’ soften Turkey’s stance towards the NATO applicants? It’s worked before in the region.Back in 1999 a powerful quake hit near the Turkish city of İzmit, and the Greeks were among the first to respond with aid, despite decades of enmity between the two neighbors.A few months later when a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit Athens, the...

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the 10th package of European Union sanctions against Russia on Wednesday morning.
EU plans to target Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in new raft of sanctions against Russia
BRUSSELS — The 10th package of European Union sanctions against Russia will ban exports of critical industrial goods worth €11 billion, blacklist propagandists and, for the first time ever, target entities linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps for aiding the Kremlin to wage war on Ukraine.“Putin is not only waging a brutal war on the battlefield but he is also viciously targeting civilians,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said while announcing the proposal on Wednesday morning. “The aggressor has to pay.”It comes as NATO warns that a major new Russian offensive is already underway in eastern Ukraine, with the city of Bakhmut enduring relentless artillery fire. The Commission’s proposed exports ban will cover electronics, specialized vehicles, spare...
