UNICEF urges support for children, as wildfires rage across Greece
GENEVA — The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday called for urgent assistance for children caught up in wildfires in Greece, considered to be the worst Europe has seen since the turn of the century.Fueled by record temperatures and high winds, the deadly fires that began across the country in July have so far claimed 27 lives, including two children — both asylum seekers, according to news reports. They were among 18 bodies discovered by Greek authorities on Aug. 22 in the national forest of Dadia, in the northeast, reportedly all asylum seekers. A 19th body was found last Thursday. As of the end of 2022, around 86,600 refugees and asylum seekers have been sheltering in Greece, with refugees from Ukraine accounting for around 25 percent.Children have been among the hardest hit by...

Super blue Moon: Rare spectacle set to light up skies
LONDON — The biggest and brightest Moon of the year will be visible on Wednesday and Thursday from around the world. It will be a rare chance to see what is known as a blue supermoon — the last one was in 2009.A blue Moon happens when the pattern of days in a year means there are 13 full Moons instead of the usual 12.If the skies are clear, the best time to see the spectacle in the UK will be in early hours of Thursday morning. This blue Moon is also known as a supermoon and will appear larger and brighter than usual. That is because the Moon is near the closest point in its orbit around Earth. But anyone hoping to see the Moon tinged the color blue will be disappointed. The name of the Moon has nothing to do with color but instead is so called because it does not fall in the usual scheme...

Migrant hunters in Greece show off captured 'trophies' after wildfire season
ATHENS — As the popular belief spreads that migrants are to blame for the fires that have ravaged Greece, self-organized civilian 'militias' are hunting them down.A man opens the back of his green camouflage van and triumphantly shows off the "25 pieces he hunted" earlier in the day.His 'hunting trophies' are terrified migrants. The scene takes place in Evros, the border region with Turkey in north-eastern Greece, and as he speaks in the video he justifies his actions by blaming the migrants for the fires that have ravaged the region."They will burn us," he says, encouraging the Greeks to follow his example: "Organise to catch them! The mountains are full of them".The migrants look into the camera without understanding what is happening, but...

YEREVAN — They call it the Road of Life, as it is the only route connecting 120,000 ethnic Armenians living in Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh region with the Republic of Armenia. But for nearly nine months the Lachin Corridor has been blocked by Azerbaijani authorities, resulting in severe shortages of food, medication, hygiene products and fuel in the breakaway region.Eighteen-year-old Hayk is standing on the balcony of a modest hotel in Goris on the Armenian side of the border with Azerbaijan, speaking to his mother on a video call."No eggs, no sugar, there are no sweets at all, bread is being rationed, got up at 04:00 the other day to stand in the queue," says his mother, speaking from the Karabakh town of Martakert.Hayk is not his real name. I have changed it for his own...

Prigozhin buried in private funeral in St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG — Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has been buried in a private funeral in St Petersburg, his press service has said.It said the ceremony, in his home city, was held in “a closed format”, and all those “wishing to say goodbye can visit the [city’s] Porokhovskoye cemetery”.Prigozhin, 62, was confirmed dead by Russian authorities after genetic analysis of 10 bodies found in a crashed plane on Aug. 23 near Moscow. The Kremlin has denied speculation it was to blame for the crash. But a number of Russia watchers — both in the country and abroad — have described Prigozhin as a “dead man walking” since an aborted armed mutiny he led back in June. All 10 people on board — including Prigozhin’s right-hand man Dmitry Utkin — died in the crash in the Tver region,...

UN appeals for nuclear test ban amid ‘alarming rise in global mistrust’
GENEVA — The United Nations on Tuesday called for more global action to end nuclear testing, warning against the danger of “collective suicide”.In his message marking the International Day against Nuclear Tests, Secretary-General António Guterres appealed for key countries to ratify the international treaty that bans experiments for both peaceful and military purposes.“This year, we face an alarming rise in global mistrust and division,” he said. “At a time in which nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons are stockpiled around the world — and countries are working to improve their accuracy, reach and destructive power — this is a recipe for annihilation.”The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) therefore represents “a fundamental step in our quest for a world free of...

'Dying by the dozens every day' — Ukraine's losses climb
There has been a dramatic rise in Ukraine's number of dead, according to new estimates by unnamed US officials. The BBC's Quentin Sommerville has been on the front line in the east, where the grim task of counting the dead has become a daily reality. The unknown soldiers lie piled high in a small brick mortuary, not very far from the front line in Donetsk, where 26-year-old Margo says she speaks to the dead."It may sound weird... but I'm the one who wants to apologise for their deaths. I want to thank them somehow. It's as if they can hear, but they can't respond."At her cluttered desk outside the mortuary's heavy door, she sits, pen in hand. It is her job to record the particulars of the fallen.Ukraine gives no official toll of its war dead - the...
