Russians are queueing up to see the Barbie film, as unauthorised copies appear in their cinemas
Russians queue up to see Barbie film despite sanctions
MOSCOW — Officially, the Barbie movie isn't showing in Russia. But unofficially...A giant pink house has been erected next to the food court in a Moscow shopping center. Inside: pink furniture, pink popcorn and life-size cardboard cut-outs of Barbie and Ken who are beaming from ear to ear.No wonder they're smiling: the Barbie film is pulling in the crowds at the multiplex opposite, despite Western sanctions. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a string of Hollywood studios stopped releasing their movies in Russia. But unauthorized copies are getting through and being dubbed into Russian.Over at the cinema it's a bit cloak and dagger. When I ask one visitor which movie he's come to watch he names an obscure 15-minute Russian film and smiles. To avoid licensing...

British man arrested in Portugal after party stabbing death
LISBON — A 27-year-old man believed to be a British national has been arrested in Portugal after allegedly stabbing another British man to death and "desecrating" the corpse.Police said the suspect was detained in the central town of Soalheira, where he had been the organizer of a party. The 37-year-old victim had been taken to a secluded area and attacked with "unusual violence", they said. The two men are not thought to have known each other personally.Early local media reports said the stabbing followed an argument during some kind of game, but police said there seemed to be "no connection with online games or challenges".They added that the actual motive was not yet clear. In a statement on Wednesday, the Judiciary Police, the national agency dealing with...

Armenians rush to help Karabakh ‘brothers and sisters’
KORNIDZOR, Armenia — Every hour, the number of people fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh climbs even further. The official count of refugees is now close to half the population of the enclave. The scenes at the border suggest the region is being emptied of ethnic Armenians. As they come, the aid effort in the town of Goris is intensifying. On Tuesday night, exhausted families slept in cars as they waited to register their arrival. There has been a renewed scramble to help on Wednesday. Local hotels are full, offering rooms for free, and Armenians are posting on social media, offering housing all over the country to refugees. There’s talk of turning a school in Goris into a dormitory until something more permanent can be found. But the authorities are adamant they can cope. One senior official told me...

Brussels calls on tech giants to help fight election disinformation
BRUSSELS — The European Commission is concerned about disinformation coming from Russia in view of upcoming national and European elections.Speaking on Tuesday in Brussels, Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said she is convinced the Kremlin is already active in trying to manipulate European voters. As a result, she wants digital platforms that signed up to the so-called Voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation to work on combatting it."The very large platforms must address this risk, especially when we have to expect that the Kremlin and others will be active before our European elections," Jourova told reporters."I expect signatories to adjust their actions to reflect that. There is a war in the information space waged against us and there are upcoming elections...

Spain fines 'Big Four' consulting firms for 'marathon' working days
MADRID — A year after the Spanish Labour Ministry began investigating working practices and conditions at the so-called 'Big Four' consultancies - Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG - the public body has decided to impose a fine totaling at least €1.4 million.Authorities were investigating whether employees were actually working longer hours than their records showed. In some cases, employees of the Big Four complained about spending up to 16 hours per day at work. All four companies have been approached for comment.Spanish media report the investigation was not easy as the consultancies lacked an hourly register, which is a requirement for all companies since the change in Spanish law in 2019.This alleged lack of accountability made it easy for “marathon working days” to become the...

'Bursts of anxiety': Impact of Ukraine war on Russians laid bare in poll
BRUSSELS — New research has highlighted Russians are increasingly feeling the pinch and seeing a more gloomy future due to fallout from the Ukraine invasion – but parts of the population apparently remain resolute. The Open Minds Insitute (OMI), a research hub focused on disinformation and propaganda, found in a recent poll that around 80% of Russians were worried about their financial well-being.This figure was a noticeable 30-point jump since the question was last asked in May.In a statement sent to Euronews on Monday, OMI founder and CEO Sviatoslav Hnizdovskyi said the rise "might indicate a trend where refrigerator reality beats TV propaganda, potentially leading to increased dissatisfaction among the Russian population if it continues."Handling an angry and hungry crowd...

Russian video ‘shows Black Sea fleet commander alive’
MOSCOW — Russia’s Defense Ministry has released a video showing the Black Sea Fleet’s commander at a conference, despite Ukraine claiming to have killed him. It’s not clear when the footage, where Viktor Sokolov appears on a video link with the defense minister, was filmed. The Ministry said the meeting with senior officials happened on Tuesday.Ukraine special forces said on Monday Adm, Sokolov and 33 other officers died in a missile strike on the fleet’s HQ in Sevastopol, occupied Crimea. They did not name the admiral directly, nor did they offer any evidence that he had died. They now say they are “clarifying” the reports.“As it is known, 34 officers were killed as a result of a missile attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation,” they said...

Ban smoking and vaping in schools worldwide urges WHO
GENEVA — Young people continue to be “relentlessly” targeted with tobacco and nicotine products, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Tuesday, in a call to ban smoking and vaping “whether sitting in class, playing games outside or waiting at the school bus stop”.According to the UN health agency, the tobacco industry’s approach has resulted in increased use of e-cigarettes, with nine out of 10 smokers starting before the age of 18 — and some as early as 11.“Considering that children spend nearly one-third of their waking hours in school, and much of the peer pressure they encounter occurs within these educational environments, schools play a pivotal role,” WHO said.Schools are in “a uniquely powerful position to play a major role in reducing the serious problem...
