Austria still opposed to Schengen accession of Romania and Bulgaria
VIENNA — Austria is still firmly opposed to the long-coveted Schengen accession of Romania and Bulgaria, arguing the passport-free area needs to become "better" before becoming "bigger."The unambiguous resistance has been well documented over the past few years and was once again expressed on Tuesday morning ahead of a meeting of home affairs ministers in Brussels."Schengen must become better and not bigger. I don't see much progress here yet, so I can't imagine any change now," said Gerhard Karner, Austria's federal minister of interior. In Karner's view, the number of border controls that European countries have imposed in recent months is a strong enough reason to prevent further expansion of the Schengen Area, which currently encompasses...

Australia and France reset relationship after 'back-stabbing' defense deal
PARIS — France and Australia are to reset their bilateral relationship after a two-year 'cold war' following a 'back-stabbing' defence deal that saw Canberra renege on a huge military contract to buy submarines from Paris. This week, foreign ministers Catherine Colonna and Penny Wong signed a new deal to share military bases and training facilities in the Pacific, clearly hoping to put the past few years behind them and move on."We are determined to step up, beef up our cooperation with the partners in the region including of course, with the number one partner for us in the region, Australia," Colonna said.Wong added that Australia was keen to work more closely with the French military, particularly in the Pacific.Speaking at the National Press Club before their...

Couples 'devastated' by UK migration visa rule changes
LONDON — Couples planning a new life in the UK have been left heartbroken by changes restricting who can apply to live in the country. From April 2024, British citizens or people already settled in the UK will need to show they earn £38,700 before their overseas partner can live here with them — a sharp jump from the current threshold of £18,600.They also still need to show they are in a marriage or civil partnership when they apply for a family visa, intend to be within six months, or that they have been living together for at least two years.Ministers say the increased income threshold will help cut immigration levels, which have reached record highs in recent years, and ensure families can support themselves.Lee, 24, from Belfast, told BBC News: "This policy means that the...

We've [been] woken up by explosions in the neighbourhood and it's scary," says 42-year-old Anna Petterson, who lives in Bro and has three children. Migrants are rescued by locals on the shore of a beach, close to the southwestern city of Cádiz, Spain
Spanish hero saves migrants forced off speedboat at gunpoint
MADRID — It took Javier González a minute to reach the migrants who had been forced from the speedboat off the Spanish coast, but by the time he got there, one of them had already died.Javier González and his crew were filming a promotional video on the beach at Sancti Petri, on the Spanish coast of Andalucía, when they spotted a speedboat approaching the shore with more than twenty people on board.Although the image was not unusual for González, as the beach is a "hot spot" for drug traffickers or incoming boats, what the Spaniard saw this time made his blood run cold. The 27 North African migrants on the boat were being thrown into the water one by one, in the middle of a storm."There was a strong current, they didn't know how to swim and they had a lot of clothes...
