Ukraine military seeks extra 500,000 soldiers — President Zelensky
KYIV — Ukraine's military wants to mobilise up to 500,000 extra people, President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed, as the war with Russia nears a two-year mark.At a news conference in Kyiv, he said his commanders were seeking "450,000-500,000 individuals", admitting this was a "sensitive" and costly issue. He said he needed more details before backing the move, hinting that 500,000 soldiers were already on the front. His comments come in the wake of aid setbacks from the US and the EU.Republicans in the US Congress first blocked a $60bn (£47bn) military package for Ukraine earlier this month. This week, representatives of both the White House and the State Department said the US was planning one more military aid package to Ukraine — but that it had limited...

French couple lose court case over African mask worth millions
PARIS — A French couple who sold an “extremely rare” African mask for €150, only to find out it was worth millions, saw their motion to cancel the original sale rejected by a court in the south of France. The couple, who are in their 80s and retired, argued there had been an “authentication error” and that the mask’s buyer, a small town second-hand dealer, knew how much the object was really worth when he bought it in 2021.But the court rejected their claims, saying the couple hadn’t made any attempt to get the mask valued before selling it."Their negligence and carelessness characterise the inexcusable nature of their error. Therefore, their request to cancel the sale on this basis is dismissed," the judges said in their decision. The court also ruled that the...

German farmers protest with their tractors at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, December 19th 2023
Angry German farmers drive their tractors to Berlin over diesel tax
BERLIN — Leaders of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition last week agreed to fill a hole in next year's budget by reducing climate-damaging subsidies and slightly reducing some ministries' spending, among other measures. That was necessary after Germany's highest court annulled an earlier decision to repurpose 60 billion euros originally meant to cushion the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic for measures to help combat climate change and modernise the country. The manoeuvre fell foul of Germany’s strict self-imposed limits on running up debt.As more details of the deal have emerged, so has discontent, notably over a plan to cut tax breaks for agricultural diesel and scrap an exemption from car tax for farming vehicles.Even Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir has...
