Farmers in Greece dump apples and chestnuts in Europe's latest agriculture protest
ATHENS — Greek farmers dumped chestnuts and apples on the pavement outside an agricultural fair Saturday and promised to escalate protests after a Tuesday meeting. The farmers were from the Thessaly region, in central Greece, and came to the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki on buses to join their colleagues from the north who had come with their tractors Friday. In recent months, similar protests have swept Europe as farmers on the continent take their grievances over inflation, foreign competition and the costs of combating climate change to the streets.“The millions of euros that the prime minister says he is giving us to cut down on production costs are a pittance,” said Kostas Tzelas, a farmers’ federation leader from Thessaly, referring to promises of support by Prime...

Ukraine war: No more easy deals for Russian convicts freed to fight
MOSCOW — Russia has been releasing prisoners to fight in Ukraine for more than a year, originally offering them a pardon and freedom after six months, even if they have been convicted of a violent crime. But the BBC has discovered this deal is a thing of the past. Now, they no longer get a pardon, face tougher conditions and instead of going home early, they must fight until the end of the war."If you sign up now, be ready to die," writes a man called Sergei in a chatroom for former Russian prisoners fighting in Ukraine. He says that since October he's been part of a new type of army unit with the name "Storm V" which convicts are now being assigned to."Before you could wing it for six months. But now, you have to make it until the end of the war," he...

Grindavik's people may never return after Iceland volcano spills lava into town
REYKJAVIK, Iceland — The resilient community of Grindavik has for the past weeks and months experienced the relentless forces of nature, once again proving why Iceland is often called the "Land of Fire and Ice."Three homes in this town on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland were destroyed this month when molten lava spewed through two fissures created by the Svartsengi volcanic system.Once a thriving fishing village with vibrant sports teams and a youthful population, Grindavik now lies empty. Its people have fled and are beginning to face up to the realization they may never be able live there again. So uncertain is their future, one woman said she wished her home had been swallowed up by lava.Over the past three years, the peninsula — approximately the size of the...

Ukraine's embattled army chief calls for new approach after setbacks
KYIV — Ukraine’s embattled army chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, says Ukraine must adapt to a reduction in military aid from its key allies and focus ever more strongly on technology if it is to win its war against Russia. In an exclusive essay for CNN, submitted amidst a swirl of rumors surrounding his future, Zaluzhnyi also addressed the challenge of mass mobilization, a source of tension between himself and President Volodymyr Zelensky. The general’s article makes no reference to his relationship with the president, nor to reports Zelensky is poised to announce his dismissal after four years in the job, a move a source said could come within days.Instead, the military commander seeks to build on an argument in an essay published three months ago, in addition to commenting for the first...
