Myanmar junta suspends aid access to a million people in state devastated by Cyclone Mocha
GENEVA — Myanmar’s ruling junta has suspended humanitarian access to western Rakhine state, where more than a million vulnerable people are in urgent need of aid a month after a powerful cyclone devastated the region, the United Nations said. The UN’s humanitarian office (OCHA) said the decision to stop aid access in the already-impoverished state has paralyzed the humanitarian response to Cyclone Mocha and crippled life-saving aid distributions to storm-hit communities.“Four weeks into this disaster response and with the monsoon season well underway, it is unfathomable that humanitarians are being denied access to support people in need,” UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ramanathan Balakrishnan said in a statement Monday.Balakrishnan said it was “yet another devastating...

Iran women defy hijab law despite threats
TEHRAN — Women in Iran are defying fresh attempts by authorities to use technology to enforce the compulsory dress code that has been a focus of continuing protests across the country. In April, national police chief Ahmad Reza Radan announced the launch of a “smart” program involving surveillance cameras to identify women failing to cover their hair or wear loose-fitting clothing in public despite the threat of fines or imprisonment. He warned that those caught breaking the hijab law for a second time would be referred to courts, that cars carrying female passengers with uncovered hair would be confiscated, and that businesses turning a blind eye would be closed. However, his announcement provoked derisive responses on social media, with women posting photos and videos of themselves...

Thousands evacuated as Mayon volcano oozes lava
MANILA — Around 13,000 people have been evacuated in north-east Philippines as the country’s most famous volcano, Mayon, continued to ooze lava.Riding lorries and buffalo-drawn carriages, people living within the “permanent danger zone” or six-kilometer radius fled to shelters.Known for its “perfect” conical shape, Mayon started spewing lava last week.
