Windows Phone 8 fades out as Microsoft mulls mobile strategy
SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft has ended support for its Windows 8 smartphones, as the US tech giant focuses on other segments, amid ongoing speculation about its strategy for mobile. Users of Windows-powered phones — which have failed badly against rivals from Apple and Google Android — were invited to upgrade to its latest Windows 10 version after Microsoft officially stopped supporting the earlier version on Wednesday. But Microsoft, which is now concentrating on business services, cloud computing, augmented reality, remains a part of the mobile landscape with applications, digital assistants and other offerings. "I think it's the death of Windows 8 phones; not the death of Microsoft's offerings in mobility," said Moor Insights and Strategy principal analyst Patrick...

Indonesia blocks Telegram messaging service over security concerns
JAKARTA — Indonesia on Friday blocked access to the encrypted messaging service Telegram, citing concerns that it was being used to spread "radical and terrorist propaganda" in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation. The move comes amid heightened concerns over the growing presence and influence of Daesh (so-called IS) group in Southeast Asia as the militant group loses territory in Syria and Iraq. Indonesia itself has seen resurgence in home-grown militancy, inspired in large part by Daesh; a twin suicide bombing at a Jakarta bus station in May killed three police officers and injured several others. It has stepped up anti-terrorism cooperation with Malaysia and the Philippines. "This has to be done because there are many channels on this service that are full...

Australia plans law to force tech giants to decrypt messages
CANBERRA, Australia — The Australian government on Friday proposed a new cybersecurity law to force global technology companies such as Facebook and Google to help police by unscrambling encrypted messages sent by suspected extremists and other criminals. But some experts, as well as Facebook, warned that weakening end-to-end encryption services so that police could eavesdrop would leave communications vulnerable to hackers. The new law would be modeled on Britain's Investigatory Powers Act, which was passed by the British Parliament in November and gave intelligence agencies some of the most extensive surveillance powers in the Western world, the government said. The Australian bill that would allow courts to order tech companies to quickly unlock communications will be introduced...

Google escapes 1.1bn euro tax bill in France
PARIS — Google is not liable for 1.115 billion euros ($1.272 billion) in unpaid taxes claimed by the French state, a French court ruled Wednesday, saying the Internet giant's Irish subsidiary is not taxable in France. "The French company Google Ireland Limited (GIL) is not taxable in France for the 2005 to 2010 period," the court ruled. Google paid just 6.7 million euros in corporate taxes in 2015 in France by booking revenues for its online empire at its European subsidiary in low-tax Ireland, a legal loophole prized by multinationals. The group employs 700 people in France but advertising contracts for its search engine or video-sharing website YouTube are signed with its Irish subsidiary. The French claim was the latest in a series against the California-based group,...

Google Earth to let users post stories, photos in coming years
RIO DE JANEIRO — Alphabet Inc wants users to post millions of stories, video and photos on its Google Earth platform in the next few years, the program chief said on Tuesday at a launch event in Brazil for content focused on showcasing the Amazon rainforest. The "Voyager" tool allows internet surfers to take interactive tours of exotic destinations on Google Earth led by the likes of primatologist Jane Goodall, with photos, information and maps. However, regular users will be able to create their own unedited content for private or public use within two to three years, Google Earth Director Rebecca Moore told Reuters. "The story of your family history, the story of your favorite hiking trip — it could be anything. It doesn't have to be profound," she said at...

Microsoft eyes buffer zone in TV airwaves for rural internet
NEW YORK — Microsoft wants to extend broadband services to rural America by turning to a wireless technology that uses the buffer zones separating individual television channels in the airwaves. Microsoft plans to partner with rural telecommunications providers in 12 states stretching from Washington to Maine to get about 2 million rural Americans connected to high-speed Internet over the next five years. It's also calling for regulatory cooperation from the Federal Communications Commission and broader support from the public sector to expand rural broadband to the more than 20 million people who don't have it. Microsoft's initiative, unveiled Tuesday, comes as policymakers struggle to extend high-speed Internet services to rural areas, which cable and phone companies have...

Tech firms protest proposed changes to US net neutrality rules
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON — Facebook, Twitter, Alphabet Inc and dozens of other major technology companies are participating in an online protest on Wednesday to oppose proposed changes to US Net neutrality rules that prohibit broadband providers from giving or selling access to certain Internet services over others. In support of the "Internet-Wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality," more than 80,000 websites are displaying alerts, ads and short videos to urge the public to oppose the overturn of the landmark 2015 net neutrality rules. Net neutrality is a broad principle that prohibits broadband providers from giving or selling access to speedy Internet, essentially a "fast lane," to certain Internet services over others. The rule was implemented by the Obama...
