Compliance or defiance? A Saudi woman’s point of view
As a university student with the entire summer off, I decided to occupy my time with a part-time job or possibly an internship. During my search, I visited one of the Kingdom’s largest department stores, as I have seen many university students working there during the summer. Almost as soon as I arrived at the management department, I was told off with one sentence: “We don’t hire women, only male students to work part-time.” I didn’t understand why. Did they mean that women could not do as good a job as men?I was frustrated and it got me into many Twitter discussions with friends and strangers. Only then did I realize that while many women in Saudi Arabia face the same discrimination everyday, not all of them are aware of the better ways to speak up for their rights. There is a...

Your inner paradise
Self-esteem represents respect‪,‬ truthfulness‪‬ and gratitude to oneself‪.‬ This comes from appreciation of the pros and cons of oneself‪. Loving our flaws and our good points is also a part of self-esteem. Treasuring our mistakes, losses and failures and learning from them is another vital part of self- esteem, for all of them redirect to various gains. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬Glorify your dreams and wishes by means of diligence and perseverance for your self-esteem. Walking away from what we don’t deserve revives our self-esteem. Also, self-esteem is when you are aware of the vibes around you and shield yourself if they are unpleasant. You have self-esteem when you are able to harm in return for being harmed, but you choose patience instead. For patience is the weapon of...

Expats add diversity to the Saudi economy
I would like to draw the reader’s attention to the importance of appreciating diversity and culture and their attributes. This world is a beautiful place and the very existence of humanity in different forms is what makes it worthwhile. As it is said: “The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of people.” Globalization and easy mobilization have allowed people to make closer contact with different cultures and, over time, they have fused together to form a mix.In Saudi Arabia, Jeddah is especially known for its diverse population and cultural mix. People from different countries coexist in Jeddah, while embracing the local norms. The streets of this port city are filled with Indo-Pakistani restaurants, Egyptian vendors, Filipino outlets and shops selling other international...

Media as ‘soft power’
Joseph Nye said: “Soft power is the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than thorough coercion.” The media often plays a key role in today’s international conflicts. Basically, the media takes two opposed and different roles. It takes an active role in conflicts and increases violence, or it stays out of the conflict and remains independent, hence contributing to conflict resolution and violence alleviation. Furthermore, the role played by the media in conflict resolution and the phases before or after conflict is determined by a set of complex factors, such as the relationship between the media and actors in the conflict and the level of independence that those in power have allowed the media. Experts in the media field assert that the media as a soft power...

The incredible machine
One cold, dark night, I went to bed while I wasn’t sleepy. I lay there bored, doing nothing. I started to wonder what I could do. For more than an hour, I roamed around my room and walked on my bed. Finally, a weird idea struck me. I thought about inventing a super gadget, and I believed that I was smart enough to make it. I could visualize the whole thing that I wanted to invent, and it looked perfect and amazing in my imagination. It was an awesome machine that could change your pillow into an electrical one able to memorize all of your dreams, and then when you wake up, you could plug its HDMI into your laptop and watch all your dreams. I was completely overtaken by this idea, and I was anxiously looking forward to making such a machine.I checked the time, and it was very late, 2:00...

A few thoughts on dieting
Dieting is a nightmare for some and a constant struggle for others except those few who are naturally slim with a normal body weight. There are numerous weight-loss programs, books, CDs and TV shows by experts and yet the battle of the bulge continues with most people losing the battle rather than their weight.I would like to share a few points with readers about dieting and losing weight. There are many factors that contribute to maintaining weight in the human body and the most important is our food intake. A person who is thin will put on weight by eating more, especially fatty foods, which help him to gain weight fast.Conversely a person can lose weight if he reduces the amount he eats, especially the amount of fatty foods. Hunger in the human body is controlled by two centers in the...

Beef ban is not a Muslim issue at all
By Dr. Hussain MadavoorCow slaughtering and beef eating have once again sparked a heated debate in India. In this debate, Muslims have no special concern and they need not take it as a religious responsibility to fight for the right to slaughter cows. The question raised by an Indian and the answer given by the permanent Research and Fatwa Committee consisting of eminent scholars of Islam from Saudi Arabia, a few years ago, are worth recalling and highly relevant in this context. The question was this: “Is it permissible for us to slaughter cows in India although we may be beaten robbed and killed if we do so ?” The following was the answer from the fatwa committee. "If slaughtering cows or selling their meat in that country exposes a Muslim to danger and severe punishment it is...

Delay increasing electricity prices
KhaledAl-SulaimanTHE government has decided to announce the new pricing of electricity and fuel in June in accordance with the fiscal balance program. I suggest delaying the announcement until the end of the summer so that people’s electricity bills do not increase with the summer heat.Choosing June is inappropriate because people are generally sensitive to any hike at any time; this is human nature. However, how will they react when the new prices of electricity are announced in the summer when electricity consumption is at its highest? The price of electricity is going to be at its highest level this year.Realizing the impact of an increase in living expenses usually takes a few months. As a result, it is inappropriate to increase electricity prices during the summer. However, if the...

Why some Saudi women prefer to remain unmarried
Samar Al-MuqrinIt is strange that the Ministry of Economy and Planning is so male-oriented when it comes to publishing statistics. The latest statistics released by the General Statistics Authority showed that the number of unmarried women in Saudi Arabia increased to four million by the end of 2015.There were no statistics for men.The ministry portrays the issue as a problem that has only to do with women without recognizing that unmarried men are a greater problem. These statistics are released annually and they inspire TV producers and newspaper columnists looking for causes and solutions. From a male perspective, the most efficient solution is polygamy. However, this derogatorily depicts marriage as an institution based on intimate contact and neglects the idea of couples forming...

Relations between parents and their children
IN earlier days, say 50 or 60 years ago, in Saudi Arabia, Asia and many countries of the world, people in their old age would be looked after by their children and their family in their own homes. In Asia, generally speaking, elderly people were regarded as wise and would wield power over other members of the family, especially the newly wedded wives. It was part of the culture that older people would do less physical work, in an age when life was labor intensive, and would command more power and respect from the junior members of the family. The elderly would make important decisions and would be consulted on many issues and in return they would bless all the members of the family and would guide them with their wisdom and experience. After the 1950s and especially the 1960s, incomes...
