Combating Islamophobia in the UK indigenously and exogenously
It has been quite a while since my articles on this subject appeared in this newspaper. However, in the meantime, some developments are unfolding within, and outside, the UK. This article will attempt to assess the potential impact thereof. On March 22, 2018, I received a message from The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of the City of London, through the executive director of his office saying:“The Lord Mayor and I would like to thank you for making us aware of your concerns regarding the safety of Saudi investments in the UK and for sharing your articles in the Saudi Gazette with the Court of Common Council and Court of Aldermen.”The initial response of any writer is usually a sense of gratification that the word did hit home. In this particular case I felt more than that; a sense of...

Why don’t we just wait in line?
QUEUES may be exhausting to wait in if they are too long, but they are usually there for organizational purposes. We see them everywhere, such as in cinemas, theme parks, passport control in airports, etc. What I don’t understand is why some people disregard queues. I see people jumping to the head of the line at a counter. I sometimes see that happening at hospital receptions and in shops.Sure we want to be served fast, but shouldn’t we also think about the other people who are waiting in the line who also wish to be served as quickly as possible? Why don’t we put ourselves in their shoes? Wouldn’t we be annoyed if someone (a latecomer) skipped ahead of us and went straight to the counter? It does not seem fair to everyone, does it? That is if we want to talk about fairness.People...

WWE: From TV to reality
I STILL remember sitting on the lap of my father in the late evening watching TV from the old box-shaped device with an antenna on top which every once in a while we had to move to get the signal right. We would wait the whole week for Friday night so we could watch (World Wrestling Entertainment) WWE (formerly known as WWF). My father would be as pumped as the WWE stars competing in the match.Although these shows were presented by an Arab commentator, he was no match for the comments that my father used to make. We used to sit 10 meters away from the TV with me on his lap but by the end of the show I would be thrown to one side of the room. My father heavily grunting, sweating and emotionally high shouted to Jimmy Superfly Sanuka not to waste time and go to the corner of the ring to jump...

Work culture: Involvement, growth and creativity
When I was young, my father would tell me the story of a farmer who divided his land between his two sons before dying, so that they could cultivate the land in order to earn their livelihood. After the farmer died, the elder son would get up early, collect his workers and would march off to his field with the attitude of “Come on let’s go and work” while the younger son hired workers for a price and told them to go and plough the fields and bring back the produce to him when ready.Slowly the elder son began to prosper whereas the younger one, who was lazy and demanding, began losing money and finally became a pauper. Although the younger son would blame many things for his failure, he refused to examine his attitude towards work, which was the main reason for his downfall. The basic...

Wake up Mother India! Your daughters are calling.
In the eyes of the world, India is greatly admired for its social ideals ingrained in the values of democracy, and it is progressing towards gender equality. That said, for a citizen of this celebrated nation, it is quite appalling to see the hashtags: “Beware in sending your females to India”, “Women are not worthy as cows in India”, “India is women’s graveyard”, “Don’t make India a Rape Republic” or a number of other abrasive phrasings of the same bitter tone in public protests and on social media. This is very much understandable for all those who are conversant with the present harsh realities in the country where the number of rape killings is horrendously high. All of those, like me, who feel proud of having been born in this noble country are now seized by a...

Broken blood relations
Sometimes tales remain untold and hurtful happenings lie buried in deep memories. The bonds of family blood relations weaken amid enraged emotions, frequent discord and unpleasant separation. How sad it is when grownup children, from one father and one mother, abstain from communication due to trivial issues! The beauty of childhood in human lives is that it is a phase full of playfulness, innocence and cheerfulness. Even if children are at times at odds with each other, there is quick accord and all is forgotten. That is the spirit that strengthens their bonding with love and solidarity. As children pass through adolescence and enter into adulthood, a whole new world appears. There are more likes and dislikes, shifting pursuits, disparate deliberations and traces of egotism and many more...

It is time that Arab media focused on investigative journalism
The 1972 Watergate scandal created some of the biggest buzz in the world. Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, was involved in the scandal that was discovered by American reporter Bob Woodward who transformed investigative journalism and laid the foundation for the freedom of the press seen today in the US. The ceiling of liberty for journalists in the US and Europe is higher than the one allowed for journalists in the Middle East or the Third World, as Westerners describe it.We must admit that investigative journalism has not for the past years been practiced here in the way it has in the US and Europe due to several obstacles. However, the current situation requires a new form of investigative journalism that is different. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the most...

In praise of mothers
I am writing to dedicate this to all mothers everywhere in the world: My mother, my wife, my aunts, my mother-in-law, and every mother out there. Your day is so special that we celebrate it on various days in almost every country in the world. In the Arab world we celebrate it on March 21 and in many countries it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.A mother’s job is the most valuable and valiant of all with a lot of work with unreasonable overtime and no income in return. From my personal experience, I can speak of two mothers, my own mother and my wife. Let me start with my mother whom my siblings and I kept busy all the time. She is a very opinionated woman with a strong attitude and a big heart. I should know because I try to emulate her with every breath I take. She is not a...

There are still gaps for e-commerce to fill
The application of e-commerce is becoming widely accepted among businesses and consumers. The numbers of virtual stores and online customers are on the rise. In recent years, a number of regular - brick and mortar - stores have started to embrace e-commerce as an important channel for offering their goods and services. The continuous quest for optimization is a characteristic of business people and incorporating e-commerce is a major milestone in continuous optimization efforts.Certain factors influence the acceptance of e-commerce, among which is the increase in the cost of labor. While e-commerce will not replace labor, it will ensure adequate manpower requirements and will help employees make the most of their time when they receive orders online instead of running regular - brick and...

Saudi-US relations are strong and strategic
The recent visit of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, to Washington was not the first of its kind. It was preceded by his historic visit to the United States when he was Deputy Crown Prince. This visit to Washington aimed to strengthen mutual strategic relations and raise the level of military, economic, security and political consultations and co-operation between Washington and Riyadh. The relationship between the two countries has been deeply rooted for over 80 years when diplomatic relations were initiated in 1933, followed by the establishment of the first Saudi diplomatic mission in Washington in 1944 and the first US embassy in Jeddah 1944, which moved to Riyadh in 1984.On the political and security level, the US administration is aware of the...
