Canadians rely on the law for protection against abuse
Canadian Muslims live in a country where citizens generally enjoy equality and freedom. But sometimes they are forced to turn to the courts in order to protect themselves from abuse from their own government. For this blessing they have to thank the country’s judicial system and former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who left behind the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom as his legacy for Canadians for all times to come. The most recent example is that of Omar Khadr, a Canadian citizen, whom the government has agreed to compensate and to whom it has apologized for violating his rights and for being complicit in his severe abuse by US authorities. The government had to do so because the Supreme Court of Canada decreed that the government had violated Khadr’s “most fundamental...

What we gain and lose from expat dependents fees
There has been confusion in the Saudi employment market as well as among expatriates following the recent imposition of a monthly fee on the dependents of expatriates working in the Kingdom. This is because of the fee has been placed on each member of an expatriate’s family, including wife and children, and because most expatriates cannot pay these fees, especially since they will double over the coming years, reaching the equivalent of the half of an expatriate’s salary or perhaps all of it.Many expatriates have started thinking about what they should do to solve this dilemma, which they are facing for the first time in the Kingdom. This issue has overshadowed all other topics such as the spiraling house rent, the increase in the education fees of their children and other concerns....

We are all responsible for keeping our city clean
Do some people believe that since the Vision 2030 announcement, they have been granted a license to litter? It appears that way, as I have seen increasing incidents of littering, a practice that shows no signs of abatement.Annual summer vacations make the Jeddah/Makkah region a major draw among the Kingdom’s premier cities for families in towns and villages who make a beeline for the larger cosmopolitan cities and those that have a coastline are usually the ones in greater demand. With its geographical location by the Red Sea, and the relaxed and diverse nature of its inhabitants, Jeddah remains the premier magnet for thousands of Saudis who make their journey to this city. A resident quickly notices such mass migration by increased traffic on roads and in public places such as shopping...

BJP’s endgame, divided opposition
Mayawati cut a rather forlorn figure as she angrily stomped out of the Indian parliament. In a statement later, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief declared she had quit the Rajya Sabha after being “gagged” by the BJP on the issue of Dalit atrocities. If Mayawati’s extraordinary move was political theater aimed at generating some buzz, especially among her Dalit supporters, and whether it worked is too early to say. It didn’t impress political pundits ensconced in television studios. Is it really the end of the road for the tallest Dalit leader once hailed by Narasimha Rao as ‘a miracle of democracy’ and by Newsweek as ‘India’s Barack Obama?’It may not be all over for the four-time chief minister yet but her party certainly faces an existential crisis. Under the...

What a speech, Emir of Qatar!
After I read about the “important speech” of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim Al-Thani last Friday, I tweeted my hopes for a wise stand, brave change of track and creative solutions to our dispute.“For every step that Qatar takes in the right direction, a similar step must be taken by countries that have decided to isolate it. I proposed to begin lifting the ban on the movement of individuals,” tweeted Dr. Abdul Khaliq Abdullah, an Emirati professor. I enthusiastically agreed. Our ultimate goal is to bring back a strayed family member, not punish them. We yearn for a happy home return and feel the pain of our Qatari brethren, unlike those who are feasting on our dispute. They pour gas on fire, and wish for it to last. It serves their agendas to have Qatar in their camp, as a financier,...

Divided UK, inconclusive election could put brakes on Brexit
LUCY Harris thinks Britain’s decision to leave the European Union is a dream come true. Nick Hopkinson thinks it’s a nightmare. The two Britons — a “leave” supporter and a “remainer” — represent the great divide in a country that stepped into the unknown just over a year ago, when British voters decided by 52 percent to 48 percent to end more than four decades of EU membership. They are also as uncertain as the rest of the country about what Brexit will look like, and even when it will happen. Since the shock referendum result, work on negotiating the divorce from the EU has slowed to a crawl as the scale and complexity of the challenge becomes clearer.Harris, founder of the pro-Brexit group Leavers of London, says she is hopeful, rather than confident, that Britain will...

Companies are more important than governments!
COMPANIES are more important than governments. This is the slogan of the new digital economy stage. What is happening today is only an explicit confirmation of that. In the past governments, through their plans and ministries, would outline the economic trends and ambitions, and companies would play in the space allowed.Today, modern technology has provided unprecedented means of empowerment and offered great solutions to simple and difficult problems. Re-engineering has become a reality for all investors in all sectors. The technology offered as solutions by companies, not by governments, to the communications and financial banking sectors has, for example, revolutionized, transformed, and completely changed the traditional business models of these sectors. The method of payment is...

Congressional GOP coming to grips with failure
A brutal reality is settling over Capitol Hill: The Republican effort to repeal and replace “Obamacare,” which has consumed the first six months of the Trump administration, may never yield results. Not only that, the GOP goal of overhauling the tax code requires passing a budget that is months overdue. That means success on the tax front is highly uncertain, despite happy talk from House Speaker Paul Ryan and others.Promised infrastructure legislation is nowhere. And a government shutdown already looms as a possibility in the fall, given slow movement on the annual spending bills needed to fund government. Money for President Donald Trump’s border wall, which faces certain opposition from Senate Democrats, looms as a major land mine. Then there’s the possibility of a...

Don’t write off post-Brexit London just yet
The City of London, with New York one of the two greatest financial centers of the world, is under a greater threat to its primacy than at any time in its 20th and 21st-century history. How it manages that threat will be central not just to the British economy, but also to the island’s constitutional and social well-being.The City, shorthand for the square mile synonymous with London’s financial district, has been a huge strategic and financial asset to the UK for almost 200 years. But Brexit has put it in some danger, and, even as it is under attack from abroad, the City can’t count on much popular support at home.French President Emmanuel Macron makes no secret of his wish for Paris to profit from Britain’s exit from the EU, a desire he voiced in London itself after talks with...

Register ‘illegal’ workers and let them find jobs
The expatriate community is now running from pillar to post trying to correct their legal status and the predicament that they are in.For many, it is not their fault. Take the case of a cab driver who came to me and said that he had paid his sponsor a fee for his iqama renewal. The sponsor took the money and so far nothing has been done and the day of the expiry of the iqama is fast approaching. The sponsor does not answer calls. The real nightmare is for those whose sponsors are in other cities. An Indian expat told me that his sponsor is in Buraidah and has demanded SR10,000. Anyway, the man’s fate has been sealed. A couple of days ago, he was detained and is now is some deportation center. In another case, two expat workers were picked up from the office where they worked. As the final...
