Sept. 15 — the failed plot
WERE we too concerned over the calls to protests on Sep 15? I would say no for those who knew their country and countrymen better. Previous calls — and there were many— ended up with nothing, so why the worry now?The heated discussion in Twitter, in my opinion, is more about the foreign hands behind the movement — mainly Qatar and its Islamists allies, their electronic army, and the fifth column among us. They were responding — in kind — to the Arab boycott and calls for leadership change in Qatar. Only this was not their first attempt. Since the so-called “Arab Spring,” they teamed up with the Obama Administration, Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood to destabilize traditional US allies. The US inspired Academy of Change, in Doha, trained young Saudis, Kuwaitis, Bahraini,...

In Madinah, praying for Myanmar
IF Makkah represents the majesty and glory of God, Madinah is all about His love and mercy. Madinah embraces and welcomes you like some long lost friend, with its endless shower of blessings and benedictions enveloping you. This is my third visit to Islam’s second holiest city and Masjid Nabawi — my first as a Haj pilgrim. After Haj, all pilgrims visit Madinah to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque and offer their respects to the Last Messenger, peace be upon him, who suffered a great deal to bring them the gift of faith. While Haj itself is a life-changing experience, what one encounters in Madinah is totally out of this world and beyond words. The awareness that the one who they grew up loving and venerating all their lives and who remains their bridge to God lies sleeping close by is a...

United and strong
WE all remember the day as if it was yesterday. It was the 11th of March of 2011 when enemies of the Kingdom called for an internal revolution against the government and they called that day ‘Hunain revolution’. The level of propaganda that was carried out before the specified date was so strong that it looked like something would happen. The propaganda was controlled and financed by outside powers that wanted to see the Kingdom destabilized. Haters were so certain that people in Saudi Arabia would follow in the footsteps of those in Tunisia, Syria, Egypt and Libya. The powers of hate were almost sure that their plans would succeed until the day came. No one ventured out. Not only did the call for revolution fail, it failed miserably. I remember the sense and level of pride we had in...

Great pilgrimage and wonderful organization!
BOTH participants and those who followed the blessed Haj season this year confirm that the preparations, equipment and capabilities mobilized for the pilgrimage were unprecedented at all levels, whether in terms of security forces, human resources, infrastructure and technical equipment and additional technical support. There has been a qualitative development in the implementation of means of support in all sectors of security, traffic, medical, safety, housing and emergency services. More than 55 thousand soldiers were recruited by Saudi Arabia in all military, civil, medical and voluntary sectors to work on the success of the pilgrimage season this year. There was constant work round the clock in different areas until the pilgrimage appeared to be in an honorable way of the...

Macron’s labor reforms face key test
PROTESTERS against President Emmanuel Macron’s proposed liberalization of French labor laws were on the streets of the country’s cities on Tuesday. The marchers, chanting slogans and brandishing placards, halted traffic as they moved slowly through the streets. A fringe of anarchists broke windows; police responded by firing tear gas. But this was no rerun of the mass marches of past years, let alone the semi-revolutionary eruptions of 1968.France’s second-largest union, the Conféderation Générale du Travail (CGT) was the only one of the three main workers’ organizations that took part. Another protest, this one organized by the far-left France Insoumise (France Unbowed) party is scheduled for Sept. 23. The Tuesday marching columns numbered, nationwide, in the few hundred...

Saudi efforts to combat terror financing
ON Aug. 20, Saudi Arabia took practical steps in the establishment of the US-Gulf Anti-terrorism Financing Center. This comes as part of the implementation of terms of the joint agreement signed during the 3rd US-Gulf summit held in Riyadh in May 2017.The Riyadh-based center will monitor, and share information, regarding both outgoing and incoming financial transactions to the Middle East and North Africa. This highlights the determination of Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf states to curb the sources of terrorism, which has become a global concern, and has impacted on the security and stability of the financial system and the economy.Saudi Arabia has a long history of combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism, through its efforts and cooperation with various relevant...

Wake up and smell the coffee
THERE are many expatriates here who have lived for decades in Saudi Arabia and have successfully forged for themselves and their families a prosperous future. Having said that, it has not taken away the concern they have for their country’s welfare and state of being. In the case of Pakistanis here, there have been some misgivings expressed by long-term residents concerned about their country’s welfare. One such individual is Mohammed H. Zakaria, CEO of Saudi Steel. He writes: I was sad and in a state of loss to listen to our defense minister statement who said that ‘it won’t be easy for the US to target or attack Pakistan’. It is really sad to see how stupid and immature our leadership and their mindset is, they are expecting and preparing for a combat with the Americans and...

The duty of scholars toward stranded Pakistanis
AT a community gathering held recently, I met a Pakistani Islamic scholar who came to the Kingdom to perform Haj. The scholar, who was the guest of honor at the function, talked about the activities that are being undertaken by him and the institution that he supervises in Pakistan. He said that these activities are not limited to delivering only religious classes but on the other hand, it is a combination of imparting both religious and material education. There are tens of thousands of students who are graduating every year from these schools. The scholar gave the attendees an opportunity to ask him questions. He gave brief answers to a number of questions that were asked to him. Most of the questions were pertaining to religious and educational issues and there were only a few questions...

Lies, politics and Iran-Qatar axis
IT is hard to understand someone if he doesn’t understand himself. It gets worse when that someone is a government with multiple heads and decision process speaking with many tongues and sending conflicting messages. Worse, their speech has no relations with their actions. So you may accept what is offered in private conversation, or even public forum, only to find the very same day that those offers are fake. Promises are made to be broken, agreements are signed to be violated, and commitment, no matter how many guarantors and witnesses, cannot be trusted for even 24 hours.Iran, Russia, and all those in between, are famous for such tactics. Al-Houthi in Yemen, for example, signed many agreements with the Yemeni government in two decades, but broke them all. They agree with you in a...

Israel and the battles of the screen!
IN open wars there are smart weapons and unconventional weapons, which are used to achieve victories of another kind. Perhaps one of the most important of these unconventional weapons is TV serials and dramas that are shown on different screens around the world.Today, Israel seeks to exploit this effectively. Israel is aware that the Hebrew market is very limited. The speakers of this language are not more than nine million people around the world, so they translate their works into languages like English, French, Spanish, German and non-traditional languages such as Hindi, Korean, Chinese and Portuguese.Israel is preparing to release a big film of its production in the name of “the angel.” From an Israeli point of view, it tells of the services provided by Ashraf Marwan “as a spy”...
