US quits UNESCO in support of Israel
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is one of the most important and most useful international organizations for humanity. It was established in conjunction with the establishment of the United Nations. It is an extension of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (ICCP), which was an advisory organization of the League of Nations, established after the First World War. The United Nations replaced the League of Nations after the end of the Second World War and it inherited several agencies and organizations founded by the League.UNESCO replaced ICCP, while the International Bureau of Education (IBE), the global center of excellence in curriculum and related matters, remained a part of UNESCO maintaining its legal status. UNESCO...

Our media vs. theirs!
SILENCE is a language, and some silence is an answer. But we are at a stage that requires a lot of talk and less humbleness. Our opponents, ladies and gentlemen, are filling world theaters with deafening chatter. The audiences await our response and clarification. It is true that some situations require letting deeds do the talking. But this does not excuse us from speaking up when truth is being kidnapped and deception takes its place. Masses need both a heartfelt speech, and a language of sense and sensibility, as well as, data and facts.Delaying a response allows your opponent to put you on the defensive. And by the time you do respond, more charges are leveled at you. If you choose silence as a tactic and “no comment” strategy, it might be taken as an admission of guilt rather than...

Can BJP's Ayodhya gambit work again?
THE more things change for the BJP and its Parivar, the more they remain the same. When in doubt or facing slightest rough weather, it reverts to the reassuring comfort of its tried and tested Hindutva agenda. What else would you expect when the economy is in doldrums and elections are due in a number of states this year and next, not to mention the 2019 General Election, which is less than a year and half away?A couple of weeks back in these columns, I had suggested that the tide of public opinion is turning against the BJP. Popular anger over the deepening economic mess amid disappearing jobs and rural distress has been so overwhelming that the ruling party has been finding it difficult to face the people even in Modi’s home state of Gujarat that goes to polls by year end.The origins of...

Lion for sale
MY first reaction on seeing this tweet was incredulity. While browsing Twitter, I came across an account that was advertising the sale of a lion cub. The person wrote in his account that the lion cub was few months old and those interested in buying this cub could call a phone number. The number was displayed on the last line of the Tweet. What astounded me was not only the man was publicly advertising the sale of the lion cub, but was openly displaying the phone number without fear of being caught. It only goes to show that there is high demand for lion cubs and its ilk and one can brazenly do business in them. This is a dangerous trend, and I have to say here that this phenomenon of having wild animals as pets is spreading in our society. The connoisseurs, who raise wild animals inside...

Saudi Arabia in colors!
I MET by sheer coincidence in one of the lounges at a Saudi airport, a few days ago, a businessman whom I had not met for a long time, and sitting with us were a well-known preacher and a young man. During our discussions, we talked about the fast and joyful decisions and developments Saudi Arabia has been witnessing recently. Out talks also reflected the expressions of wonder and surprise of what had happened and is happening and the tremendous reactions to it.As the talks progressed, someone asked, do you not fear change? I said to him, is it a change or a reform of a path? Saudi Arabia has molded itself into a society restricted to black and white shades without acknowledging that living societies have different degrees of rich colors depending on their ability to accept and build on...

Industry: A lifeboat for our children and grandchildren
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one of the leading countries in the world today, is seeing sweeping developments that will bring benefits to the country and its people who will always show allegiance to their homeland and their King.Allah the Almighty has bestowed natural resources upon us, especially oil. Not so long ago, the Kingdom had few economic resources. Our fathers and grandfathers tell us stories about the hardship of the economic conditions in the past and how these conditions have improved today. They lived a tough and primitive life, but today we are blessed with many good things, thanks to Allah the Almighty and the wisdom of the Kings of this country. The oil boom allowed the Kingdom to take big strides into the future. However, we are sometimes anxious about the future, as oil...

Weakness in controlling joint stock companies
Okaz newspaper recently published a report about the misappropriations discovered at Banque Saudi Fransi that led to a fall in the bank’s share price. According to the newspaper report, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) is investigating the violation of rules that led to the huge misappropriations and major irregularities that occurred in the bank. The newspaper published comments from legal experts on the issue. They stated that the irregularities and misappropriations at Banque Saudi Fransi were financial crimes, which confirm the weakness and inefficiency of auditing bodies associated with listed companies. They pointed out that some quality control bodies are unable to carry out their legal and supervisory duties. This demonstrates the weakness of the legal and financial...

China’s ‘Big Brother’ tech gives surveillance new reach
As tens of thousands of Chinese walked into a festival in the eastern port city of Qingdao in August, a software program scanned their pictures. Those identified as being on a police list of wanted persons were pinpointed in less than a second. By the end of the three-week event, authorities had made 25 arrests, including one of someone on the run for a decade. According to police, the program had correctly matched faces in 98 percent of cases. The exercise is one of the latest examples of how Beijing is tapping the newest technology to redefine the limits and scale of mass surveillance. As China’s President Xi Jinping and those around him cement their power with purges and a ruthless anti-corruption drive, they are relying on these breakthroughs to stymie dissent. This push for loyalty...

Observations of an expat
Expatriates have often been maligned unfairly in the press as money-hungry people who just come here to fill their pockets and then flee the country once they have had their pockets filled with no regard or concern for the welfare of their host country or its citizens. Over the years, some in the press have used expatriates as their punching bag for any problems that arise and have devoted newspaper columns to the ills of their presence in this country.I can categorically state that nothing could be further from the truth. Almost all expatriates I have known over the years have lived a full life and have genuinely involved themselves in the progress of this country while displaying high regard and affection for this land they call home. Many are pained by shortfalls they see within society...

UN dubious role in Muslim world!
ALTHOUGH Muslim and Arab countries represent the largest bloc in its General Assembly with 57 members, and Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States are the biggest donors and supporters of its humanitarian programs, the United Nations plays a suspicious role in Arab and Islamic issues.More recently, this role has been evident in Syria, Yemen, Myanmar and earlier in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chechnya, Turkestan, Palestine, and everywhere Muslim communities suffered injustice and tyranny. However, the UN has not provided any deterrence or helpful stand to defend Muslims and Arabs. In fact, it often seemed to stand with the oppressors, as with Serbia and Israel.Since the UN overtook the Yemeni file, and after the resignation of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the situation in Yemen has gone from...
