Put an end to the vilification of Islam
As the year 2017 slides into 2018, one thing that is obvious to me is the decline in outrageous fatwas (religious edicts) that used to spring up constantly in times gone by. Going back in history, callous individuals used religion as a tool to promote their brand of morality. To sway the poor and uneducated, they would often appear in the guise of holy men and preachers of knowledge and peddle their personal beliefs in the form of holy edicts. We in this country have not been strangers to such phenomena. In fact, in the past three or four decades, edicts or fatwas, as they are called, took on extreme and sinister guises. These fatwas are supposedly derived from interpretations of the hadith, the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Clerics were quick to issue edicts based on...

Palestinians no longer trust US, the unfair mediator
It is a well-known fact that US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is contrary to international laws and the resolutions of the United Nations and all international conventions. It is not appropriate for the president of the nation that claims to be the leader of the free world to practice the law of the jungle and violate international conventions. This flagrant violation of international law has triggered massive outrage all over the Muslim world, and the Muslim masses from Jakarta to Morocco have taken to the streets to express their condemnation of this unjust act. By this act, Trump gives something that is not owned by him to someone else who is not at all entitled to have it.Almost all members of the United Nations Security...

Free Iran ... at last!
IF I were an Iranian leader, I wouldn’t sleep these days. All my well-kept schemes are exposed. My worst crimes are unearthed. My allies and agents are condemned. My secret closet is searched and every bone of my victims is found. The court of law is in order. Every shred of evidence is presented. My lawyers are overwhelmed and powerless. It is a matter of days before the jury and judge to decide my fate. Most likely, I would be found guilty as charged and hanged. All the above is public knowledge, now, but what no one is telling me, is what is my punishment. Would it be harsh or too harsh. How is the execution going to be — quick or painfully slow? One thing is too clear to be ignored—All the signs point to the present, not the future. If I could just peek through the keyhole into...

The road to Jerusalem
THE US decision to ‘recognize’ Jerusalem as Israel’s capital comes exactly a century (Nov. 2, 1917) after Arthur Balfour, the British foreign secretary and later the prime minister, announced the creation of a Jewish homeland on the Palestinian land. A century separates the American and British perfidy but the underlying sentiment remains the same, giving away something that is not theirs to give away in the first place. The sheer unjustness and brazenness of this whole business is breathtaking! And you thought colonialism is long dead and buried!Who are the Americans and the British to give away the Palestinian homeland, homes, holy cities and the very national identity to people born in Europe, Russia and America? As if the long repression and dispossession of Palestinians in their...

The road to Jerusalem

Jerusalem, forever the capital of Palestine
HERE is a story of a man who was living peacefully in his own home in a peaceful neighborhood with peaceful neighbors, when all of the sudden an unexpected thief moves into the house with the help of powerful people from the next neighborhood, who next forces the owner to allow the person to live in this house. This ‘forced tenant’, with the help of his powerful allies, first slowly encroaches a lot of space in the house and then declares that that this house is his and claims ownership of it. Along with the claim they have by now forced the real owner of the house to a small room next to the balcony, and on many occasions the ‘forced tenant’ has tried to push the real owner to the balcony in the hope that he would fall off, leaving the way clear for the ‘forced tenant’ to...

Who paved the way for Trump!
KEEPING his election promise, President Donald Trump announced the US recognition of Jerusalem, as the capital of Israel and his country will eventually move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.Ever since the US Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995, all presidential candidates promised the same during their election campaign irrespective for their win or loss. The only difference is that Donald Trump kept his word unlike his predecessors. But what interests me is how do the Arabs “support” this decision? What mistakes and sins they committed to make this decision happen? There is no clearer case in the world today than the Palestinian issue, but the Palestinian cause has been hijacked by opportunistic political groups with the help of some Palestinian leaders. Examples...

Opportunities, challenges for Canadian Muslims
Muslims believe, as do most Canadians, that Canada is a welcoming, law-based country that cherishes freedom, democracy and the diversity of its people. But these are troubled times, even for Canada and Canadian Muslims. This year started with the killing of six worshippers and the wounding of 19 in a Quebec mosque. The perpetrator was a white supremacist who hated immigrants. Canadians rallied behind Muslims and affirmed that they valued Muslims as fellow citizens. But in October the Quebec legislative assembly passed Bill 62 that bars services to women wearing face coverings. Observers believe the targets are niqabi-clad women though only a tiny minority wears niqab.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said the federal government might challenge the law’s legality. Provincial premiers have...

Effrontery of some Palestinians in offending the Kingdom
The House of Palestine needs real reform to put an end to the infighting and disunity within and the misconduct both within and without. There are raging accusations and sloganeering that may lead to further division and not to unity. Some Palestinians forget the fact that the position of Saudi Arabia on the Palestine issue has not witnessed any change ever since the period of the Kingdom’s founder King Abdul Aziz. The kings who succeeded him also held fast to this position, considering Palestine to be the core issue of Arabs.Indeed, there may not be any Arab government other than the Kingdom whose prime concern is the issue of Palestine and the situation of the Palestinian people. Saudi Arabia is holding fast to this firm policy with regard to Palestine and this is attributed to many...

In Brexit Britain, economic gravity will take its toll
Britain looks set to get what it craves in its negotiations with the European Union. The British government has contrived a way around the impasse over avoiding controls at the Irish land border and bowed to paying more or less what the EU was demanding as a divorce settlement. Now European leaders meeting at the summit of Dec. 14-15 are expected to authorize talks over the UK’s main priority: future trade arrangements. But just as the first phase of the negotiations has revealed Britain’s weak hand over the terms of its departure from the EU, so the next phase will reveal its weak hand in forging a favorable new economic relationship with the union.Blame economic gravity for that. The larger and closer that economies are the more they trade with each other. The smaller and farther away...

Friends of Humanity
The title of this article is the name of a nonprofit charity society founded by Ahmed Karim Jangda and a group of philanthropists in Illinois in the United States. The purpose of this society is to render voluntary services to the stranded Pakistanis or the so-called Biharis who have been stranded since the secession of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. They migrated from the Indian state of Bihar to East Pakistan at the time of the partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan in 1947.When Bengalis called for secession from Pakistan, these Biharis stood with the Pakistani army so as to maintain the unity of Pakistan, and this prompted Bengalis to consider them to be their enemies. They were treated as such and were driven out of their homes. Subsequently, they were forced...
