Addressing the absence of an education policy
Education in the Kingdom continues to suffer because we do not have a strategy for providing a sufficient technical workforce to achieve industrial development for the country. Despite the fact that the unemployment rate has hit 12.8 percent (close to one million Saudis) according to the General Statistics Authority, we have around eight million expatriate workers in the country. The reason for the high number of expatriate workers can be attributed to the fact that the majority of the members of the public believe that technical and vocational education does not befit Saudis. That is why most Saudis choose higher education instead. There are indications that 63 percent of college students study majors, such as education, humanities, sociology and Islamic studies. There is no big demand...

Davos: Brazil is back
On Wednesday, I set out on my first 2018 international activity. I participated in the World Economic Forum in Davos in Switzerland. It enabled me to address a global audience comprising political leaders, businessmen and women, opinion makers, at various points during the Forum. Once again, I spoke about the reform program which has been transforming Brazil. We have turned the page of the economic crisis because we were able to say no to populism and acted responsibly. Moved by a long-term vision, our government has been building, through a permanent dialogue with the National Congress and the society, the foundations of an efficient State, which provides its citizens with quality services within a balanced budget. These also constitute the foundations for sustainable growth, indispensable...

A distinguished diplomat
An article in Saudi Gazette on 9 Dec. 2017 dealt with a number of veteran Saudi diplomats who helped build Saudi Arabia’s foreign relations. Having enjoyed the privilege of belonging to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and spending more than 40 years as part of the Kingdom’s diplomatic community, I know the eminent personalities mentioned in the report. I have had personal knowledge about some of them while I know others through their writing or from the information contained in the records of diplomatic missions.I would like to shed light on Sheikh Mohammed Al-Shubaili, one of the most humble, generous and popular of these distinguished diplomats. I don’t think that anyone who is a contemporary of these personalities would disagree with me in this regard. Though I did not have the...

A citizen without citizenship
A few days ago, I read of a real-time tragedy when a family was wrenched apart without much feeling for the consequences. A Michigan man of Mexican descent was deported last week from Detroit in the US to Mexico, a move that many of his supporters say was another example of immigrants being unfairly targeted under the Trump administration. After 30 years of living in the US and working as a reliable and trustworthy landscaper, the 39-year-old Jorge Garcia’s eyes were streaming with tears as his wife cried out uncontrollably while his 15-year-old daughter sobbed into her father’s shoulder as they hugged for one last time near the entrance to the airport security gate at Detroit Metro Airport. Two US immigration agents kept a close watch nearby to ensure he wouldn’t flee. Garcia plodded...

Indian Muslims need smart leaders
It is seven decades since India became free. The world has changed beyond recognition. So has India from what it used to be 70 winters ago. The priorities, concerns and attitudes of its people have undergone a watershed transformation. If anything has remained static in this forever-evolving landscape of mindboggling diversity, it is the Indian Muslim. He remains where he was in 1947. His concerns, issues and priorities remain what they were at the time of Independence. One day, he sees Shariah under attack. At other times, either his religious places are threatened or there is a clear and present danger to his religious rights and sentiments. When he gets some time to breathe, he has to worry about his identity and physical protection. Many of these issues and challenges are recurring in...

Where are the world police when we need them?!
When a nation, which is a founding member of the United Nations, is continuously attacked by another member via proxies, fifth columns and sleeping cells, what is the responsibility of the world community? My country has been targeted by neighboring Iran for decades. Since the establishment of the theocratic regime on the other side of the Arabian Gulf, we have been on the receiving end of all kinds of meddling in our internal affairs, support of local and foreign terrorists and the execution of terrorist attacks. When the Khomeini regime took over our eastern neighbor, Iran, it established a constitution based on exporting the so-called “Islamic” revolution to the rest of the world, starting with neighboring “Muslim” countries. The idea is to convert Sunnis to Jafari Shiites (who...

The power of soft culture!
With its great economic success and its dazzling political stability, China is aggressively moving toward promoting itself as a cultural and tourist destination. After years of attempts by the ruling Communist Party to dissociate China from its past and to destroy everything related to the “perdition” that preceded the Communist Revolution, the party now glorifies and highlights the “achievements” of the Chinese past and highlights its most important advantages. In 2018, China seeks to be the country with the largest number of archaeological and heritage sites recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). China, with 52 archaeological sites, is only surpassed by Italy with 53, but China has 15 new sites that are not registered, while...

Print media: Is it dying?
JOURNALISM, an undying passion of mine since I was young, is at a crossroads. Like any business sector, media has borne the brunt of the technological revolution and has evolved into a multi-faceted medium after being buffeted by the winds of change. What has taken place in the last two to three decades has not happened in nearly two centuries — when print was king despite the presence of other forms of media.Today, dissemination of news is not restricted to a few mediums, as the advent of social media has changed reading and the spreading information by introducing a basic element that rivals all other forms — instant speed. But this speed comes at the cost of trust, as the handy tech gadget — the mobile phone — has become a versatile instrument for content transfer, but a poor...

When it is cold, Canadians shiver, ignore politics
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s New Year message was inspiring and honest – he admitted that the country faces serious challenges. He said: “We marked the 150th anniversary of Confederation, and looked back on the remarkable achievements Canadians have made... We recommitted ourselves to our shared values, and we celebrated the diversity that makes us strong. Millions of people – of every background, origin, culture, and faith – have come together to make Canada the diverse, open, and prosperous country it is today.“The 150th anniversary of Confederation was also a chance to reflect on the moments Canada has not lived up to its ideals. Indigenous peoples, and many Canadians, have faced prejudice and oppression in our history. In the New Year and the years to come, we must...

The Bitcoin bubble may soon burst
There has been a lot of talk about the digital currency Bitcoin with calls to invest in it along with claims about the high return that investors have already received.Bitcoin, an electronic virtual currency, is not issued by the central bank of any country and has no reserve or financial authority to ensure its value as well as to regulate transactions so that customers can approach these authorities in the event of any malpractice.Dr. Abdullah Dahlan, an economic columnist, wrote recently in Okaz newspaper about this new currency. After analyzing the profits that could be earned and the elevated risk and volatility involved, he warned against falling into the trap of those who are promoting this currency system.Dr. Dahlan said that Bitcoin, which emerged in 2009, was designed by an...
