Better to play it safe than be sorry
Have you ever been so mad at somebody that you were overcome with an overwhelming urge to strike back, and strike hard? In most instances and with most people, reason takes over and the hunger for revenge gradually dissipates. But there are other people who will just not let it blow away. Consumed with a passion for retaliation, they wait for an opportune time and then hit back where it usually hurts! This phenomenon is not limited to a certain race or nation. There are no defined geographical boundaries for this set of human emotions. It happens everywhere. And it was a particular incident of this nature, told to me by the aggressor, that inspired this article.Jennifer, a New Yorker married to a Saudi engineer and a highly independent lady, related an incident that took place shortly after...

Finding balance between Islam and the West
“The current dynamic agitating Europe is Islam,” argues Ambassador Akbar Ahmed in his much-awaited new book, Journey Into Europe: Islam, Immigration and Identity.“The long-drawn-out wars between Catholics and Protestants, the struggle against the Ottomans, the large-scale migrations to America, the world wars, and the confrontation between the West and the Soviet Union are no longer center-stage. On philosophic, political, and cultural levels, Islam is central to the discussion about Europe,” notes Ahmed in the opening pages of perhaps the most important book of his illustrious career, dedicated to studying Islam and its engagement with the modern world.“Islam affects a wide range of people, from young Muslims unsure of what to make of their faith and its place in Europe to the...

Why is Qatar stirring trouble?
I ASKED my followers on Twitter: Why is Qatar playing the troublemaker in our region? Most respondents thought it was a psychological issue. I agree. Qatari leaders are too much aware of their small size. The total number of Qataris is around 300,000, including thousand of nationalized foreigners. They live in a tiny desert Peninsula of 11,581 km2 (4,471 sq mi). Still, the city-state has the world’s third-largest natural-gas reserves. With so much riches, but so limited capacity, one might vie for a higher positioning in regional and world politics. We have witnessed similar cases. Former president of Uganda, Idi Amin, managed to occupy headlines for many years with his childish, but dangerous behavior. Other reckless personalities include Mobutu Sese Seko, Zaire, Muammar Qaddafi, Libya,...

When expat workers become a burden!
LAST Tuesday was a day to remember for many owners of small and medium establishments when they were suddenly hit with, what was described as, a shocking ‘collective bill’ issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Development. Owners of these establishments described these bills as the last nail in the coffin of their business. The amount imposed is on the number of expat workers working in these establishments. Companies in which expats outnumber Saudis will have to pay SR400 every month for each expat worker, or pay SR300 for each expat worker when the numbers of expats employed by them equal the number of nationals in the firm. The issue was a subject of a long debate on social media and between economic experts and opinion writers, as they thrashed out the issue threadbare. It was...

Greetings to the city of Muharraq!
I REGULARLY receive dozens of invitations to attend conferences, seminars, forums, meetings and exhibitions on a wide range of political, economic, social, intellectual and cultural issues. However, many of such events turn into “duplicated copies”, having same faces and same themes, and some of them are repeated “periodically” in which merely the location of the city or the host country is changed, but the subject and its treatment remain boring and monotonous. This is evident in the periodic events celebrated by choosing a city as the capital of Islamic culture. But what encouraged me to accept the invitation is that it is in Bahrain, which has adopted a clear and explicit approach for a long time, in which culture is respected as an interface that reflects the country’s rich...

Downfall of countries
Although the International Monetary Fund is run by the United Nations, it has been accused of being one of the instruments the United States uses to control the world economically. In his book “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man,” John Perkins confirmed this fact. Perkins was tasked with shaping economic plans for Third World countries through mega projects that these countries could not afford. The plan was to make the country resort to global finance institutions to get a loan and end up being unable to pay it off. The United States uses this advantage to control Third World countries politically and economically. When the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) announced an oil embargo on the United States, oil prices were significantly increased while the budget...

Canadian Muslims contemplate their position in society
It was an unforgettable experience – several neighbors stood at the oldest mosque in Ottawa to welcome worshippers as they came for Friday prayers. This was a year ago when a disturbed youth had burst into a mosque in Quebec and opened fire, killing six people and wounding 19. On the anniversary of the attack, functions were arranged throughout Canada in solidarity with Muslims. It was the first time in Canada that innocent people were attacked in a house of worship. The incident shook Muslims, and other Canadians, and reminded them that racists, bigots and unstable people remain a threat.Canadian authorities at all levels condemned the attack and described Muslims, in the words of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as “an esteemed part of all our communities.”Quebec police charged...

When will Kashmiris be given the right to self-determination?
The Pakistan Repatriation Council (PRC) recently organized a symposium in Jeddah to mark the occasion of India’s occupation of Kashmir, a predominantly Muslim province that should have joined Pakistan in accordance with the agreements under which the subcontinent was divided.Speaking on the occasion, a number of prominent figures underscored the importance of Kashmir as a part of Pakistan for which the nation fought several wars with India. They also emphasized that the people of Kashmir must be given the right to self-determination guaranteed by several international resolutions. The speakers requested the Pakistani government to demand the implementation of United Nations resolutions to conduct the referendum which was supposed to take place 70 years ago. They also urged Islamabad to...

Holocaust envelops Palestinians
It has been more than 50 years since the unlawful Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. These are Palestinian lands the Israelis control through repression, institutionalized discrimination, murder and systematic abuse of the Palestinian population’s rights.Human rights organizations have periodically highlighted major violations of international human rights laws and humanitarian laws that illustrate the occupation: unlawful killings; forced displacement; abusive detention; the closure of the Gaza Strip and other unjustified restrictions on movement; and the development of settlements, along with the accompanying discriminatory policies that disadvantage Palestinians.Israel always explains away its abusive practices in the name of security. “Whether it’s a child...

Embracing the Other the German way
ALL European cities somehow look identical to me. Berlin is no exception. The German capital is a heady blend of the old and new with tradition and modernity living in harmony with each other. The lengths to which the Europeans go to take care of their cities is instructive and fascinating. For them, they are not merely urban habitats but their nation’s heritage. The past is cherished and protected with a passion that is quite alien to us. Unlike South Asia and the Middle East, where history is taken for granted and often neglected, no landmarks and monuments are allowed to go to seed in Europe. Every tiny slice of history is preserved for the posterity with great care. While European cities like Berlin and London proudly live and breathe the past, great Indian cities like Old Delhi...
