The Kingdom’s OPEC victory
Saudi Arabia’s delegation, led by Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih, found success during Friday’s OPEC meeting in Vienna, Austria. The meeting resulted in the unanimous decision to increase global oil production, with an unofficial target of an added one million barrels per day. But why was this decision made? And who are the true winners of the deal?Reason for the decisionThe fact of the matter is that the market is demanding more oil as we enter the second half of 2018. A supply shortage in crude oil would be a very real and global issue without Friday’s decision to increase production. Some of the world’s largest nations, such as the United States, China and India previously urged oil producers to increase supply to avoid an oil deficit that could threaten global economic growth....

Street cleaners deserve fair wages, safe work environment
There is an old Arab story about cheating. Once a person purchased purportedly good quality dates from a trader but found later that the dates were of inferior quality. At the same time, he found that the trader also cheated him by giving him less dates than he paid for. The consumer then protested that he was a victim of double cheating.Similar is the case with our street cleaners. The winners are the contracting companies and establishments that offer to clean cities and sign contracts worth hundreds of millions of riyals. In the execution of these contracts, these firms come to an agreement with cleaning workers through labor recruitment offices. These contracts with workers are nothing but a mockery, as they do not guarantee any decent pay and perks for the workers. These workers are...

Why Saudis vacation abroad
Over the past two decades, the Kingdom has come a long way in developing its tourism industry. And spurred by Vision 2030, such developments seem to know no bounds. Plans for mega entertainment cities and places of interest and the development of our heritage sites for easy access to visitors make it a formidable choice when people are deciding where to spend their summer holidays. With the summer holidays for schoolchildren in full swing, hundreds of thousands of families are busily preparing for a holiday somewhere or the other. To understand the draw of overseas tourism in this country, one has to come to grips with what it is that drives most families to foreign destinations. Is it the summer heat, the exotic attractions, or just what?I caught up with a few individuals who have booked...

Saudi women in the driving seat
AT a time when good news is hard to find, we have been blessed here with lots of happy surprises. After waiting for what seems like eternity, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman gave Saudi women even more to celebrate about: The right to drive and the law protecting them from sexual harassment on the road, in office and at cyberspace. The last Sunday will go down in history as the day Saudi women were finally free to drive after ten moths of preparations. Ever since women driving schools were opened, thousands have had extensive training and received their driving licenses. Scores of female investigators have been trained to deal with accidents and traffic disputes involving females. In addition, special parking spaces in universities, schools and markets have been preserved for...

Jordan protests expose sinister plots
JORDAN recently witnessed widespread popular protests triggered by the previous government’s plan to raise taxes. The proposed hike was subsequently withdrawn by the new government, however, the move brought to the fore very important and pertinent issues facing the country. As a matter of fact the crisis was purely an internal Jordanian affair caused by worsening economic conditions such as weak economic growth, falling incomes and rising unemployment rate. There are a number of reasons which can be attributed to the overall deterioration in the country’s economy but the primary among them which was also pointed out by Jordanian King Abdallah himself when he said that the border closure with Syria adversely impacted the export of Jordanian products to Europe by land at competitive...

A blast from the past: Cherishing the memories of Eid celebrations abroad
EID is an occasion when people wear new dresses and exchange greetings by embracing each other as they rejoice. As we recently celebrated it, it is worthy to recall that the first festival that Muslims celebrated was Eid Al-Fitr and it was marked in the second year of the Migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When the Prophet came to Madinah, he found that people used to celebrate two days during pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyya). He said: “I came to you and you had two days during (Jahiliyya) for play and amusement. Indeed Allah has substituted them for you better days: the Day of Sacrifice (Day of Al-Adha) and the Day of Fitr.”Eid Al-Fitr marked the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and after distribution of Fitr Zakat to its beneficiaries. The Prophet (PBUH)...

Some words of caution
OUT for a short drive on Monday I noticed the following on the roads: Seven motorists busily engaged in a conversation with their phones stuck to their ears. Three vehicles with infants straddling their mothers who seated them precariously on the front seat besides the driver. Fourteen other vehicles had drivers who had obviously forgotten to put on their seat belts. During this driving span, I also noticed two passing patrol cars. Now the reason I bring this up is that in just a few short days, women will be joining these motorists on the road. The dawn of their driving will commence on June 24 as per a royal decree issued in September 2017. According to the traffic department a substantial number of driving licenses have been issued to qualified female motorists who are undoubtedly eager...

Iran in Yemen and Syria — interesting times!
WHENEVER I gave a presentation about the Middle East during my higher studies (1994-1999) in US schools, I was often asked: Why all these troubles have been roiling the Middle East for so long? My usual answer would be: Perhaps, Allah knew how troublesome this region would be, that’s why He sent all prophets there! That was then, when only three burning issues unsettled the region — Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Israel and Iran. Today, we are up against a plethora of conflicts. Apart from the seemingly unresolvable problems in Palestine, Iraq and Syria, Iran tops the world’s troublemakers with its involvement everywhere — from Yemen, Kurdistan, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Pakistan, to as far as Nigeria, Morocco and Mauritania.Turkey is following suit (after a long period of zero...

Syrian Diaspora: Power and success!
MIGRATION for Syrians is not new. There are large numbers of them living in many countries across the world covering all continents for quite some time. They have been working in the fields of trade and industry with notable success. But during the last eight years following the outbreak of the Syrian revolution against the tyrannical regime of Bashar Assad, hundreds of thousands of Syrians who fled their country as immigrants or refugees to escape the death at the hands of the worst system known to mankind in the contemporary world were received by many countries. What happened next was a significant change. Along with the stories of tragedies and humanitarian catastrophes that break one’s heart into tears, there are astonishing and inspiring success stories of the thousands of Syrians...

Rise of the hardliners in Europe migrant boat crisis
BRUSSELS — Italy’s refusal to admit the migrant-packed Aquarius ship met little protest from other EU countries apart from France, which analysts see as a sign of how hardliners are now shaping solutions to the migration crisis.French President Emmanuel Macron denounced Rome’s “irresponsibility” but failed to sway a European Union now bent on protecting its external borders after years of division over the worst such crisis since World War II.The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm in Brussels, limited itself to appeals for solidarity among the 28 member states and for humanity toward migrants adrift at sea.Rome’s refusal to admit the Aquarius marks a “radical” departure from European attitudes five years ago, said Yves Pascouau, a researcher at Nantes University...
