Conversations with a rabbi
Not long after we had boarded the panoramic coach of the intercity that was to take us from Zurich to Innsbruck, the call of nature came a-knocking. After making sure my son and my nephew were comfortably tucked in their seats, I hurried to respond to the task at hand.On my way back, I sauntered over to the dining car, where with a steamy cup of coffee in hand, I took in the breathtaking scenery and silently marveled at the Almighty’s natural bounties.Fifteen minutes later, as I was making my way back to our coach, I noticed my seat and several surrounding ones had been taken over by a group of rabbis. As I approached my seat, the rabbi occupying my seat was deeply involved in a sermon to a group of teenage rabbis, all dressed in their orthodox outfits, including black hats and...

Legalizing hashish in Lebanon: Who benefits?
The Lebanese Parliament is set to legalize hashish! Its Speaker Nabih Berri last Wednesday told US Ambassador to Lebanon Elizabeth Richard that Parliament is preparing to study and approve legislation to legalize the cultivation of cannabis for medical use, the state-run National News Agency reported. In a meeting with Richard, Berri said the move would be taken in a manner similar to “many European countries and some US states.”In an interview with Bloomberg earlier this month, Caretaker Economy and Trade Minister, Raed Khoury, said Lebanon could legalize the cultivation and export of hashish for medical treatment, adding, it could create a $1 billion industry. “The quality we have is one of the best in the world,” he boasted. This came after global consultancy firm McKinsey & Co....

The importance of economic stability!
When the British people in a referendum decided to leave the European Union, there was dialogue and debate about the commercial, economic and trade bloc that would replace the EU. The most likely new trading partners would seem to be English-speaking countries, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. All of these countries were former British colonies with similar values and objectives and the same depth of security and intelligence coordination, along with good trade relations. Britain could also seek to compensate for its exit from the EU by entering into trade agreements with Commonwealth countries, which were once ruled by Britain and with which the UK continues to have a political relationship. However, many of these countries are underdeveloped and...

The Trump-ification of NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was originally established for the purpose of having a unified military force to stand in the way of the Soviet Union. Today, the alliance remains relevant with the existence of non-Soviet threats, such as terrorism, human trafficking, and general danger from tyrannical regimes. The organization has not realized its full potential in recent history but US President Donald Trump might be the man to change that. There’s nothing wrong with President Trump’s approach of prioritizing mutual benefit and equality when it comes to brokering deals and negotiation. The United States of America is in fact the strongest nation on the planet, but that does not mean that it is obligated to restrict its trade potentials for the sake of compassion toward...

Saudi Arabia: Kingdom of Humanity
At the Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum held last February, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described Saudi Arabia as one of the most important countries in the world in the provision of humanitarian assistance, fulfilling the requirements of humanitarian operations and reducing poverty, hunger and infectious diseases. Saudi Arabia provides financial aid to many countries without discrimination. It has become one of the top ten countries in the world in providing assistance in the form of humanitarian and charitable grants and soft loans to boost development in developing countries. In 2014, Saudi Arabia became the world’s first humanitarian aid provider in terms of its gross national income, with official development assistance amounting to SR 54 billion ($14.5 billion)...

A suggestion from Ghana
I received many emails and phone calls following the last article I wrote about regular maintenance and cleaning of mosque restrooms. Most senders and callers criticized the condition of the restrooms of mosques located on highways and agreed that it was difficult for women and children to use these unclean restrooms with lingering odors and garbage thrown everywhere. The wife of the Ambassador of Ghana to the Kingdom sent me an email about unclean restrooms on the Riyadh-Makkah highway. She traveled on the highway with her husband and was shocked at the bad condition of the restrooms. She even suggested a solution to this problem, which I hope the officials in charge of mosques at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs take into consideration. She came up with this suggestion in order to...

Basic understanding of the region
During a recent trip to the USA, I was often amused by the lack of understanding some people had of this part of the world. And I cannot really blame them. Their schools do not delve deeply into issues beyond their borders, and their media is often provincial to say the least. But with the coming of the Internet, some had made the effort to reach beyond their borders in an attempt to understand themselves and what the world perceives them to be. To them I say bravo. Get rid of your domestic shackles and explore. The pursuit of knowledge about others is enlightening. And to the rest who prefer to remain in a dormant state for whatever reason and allow Fox Network News to feed them their news fodder, I will introduce a basic understanding of the Middle East in a language that hopefully they...

Summer is here: Where is local tourism?
It is “officially” summer in Saudi Arabia! Families are looking for a “cool” vacation in their hometown, or anywhere else. Warm to hot places, like Jeddah, Yanbu and Jizan, are competing with green, rainy and crisp Taif, Baha and Abha. Events, entertainment and shopping centers are as important for vacationers cool temperatures.Dubai, Bahrain and Cairo are living proof that hot weather can be beaten with good programs. Air-conditioning in mega malls, theaters, cinemas and theme parks is taking care of the heat and humidity issue. Tourists need more than green mountains and refreshing weather. Life is about variety; tourism is about action.Saudi Vision 2030 has realized all the above. Therefore, one of its top goals is to increase the number of domestic tourists and bring more from...

Ethiopia and Eritrea: A new chapter?
After nearly 20 years of stalemate, the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments have mutually agreed on a peace treaty. On July 9, the leaders of the neighboring African nations signed the “Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship” into effect, putting the decades-long contention behind them. But, what was the dragged-out conflict all about? How will the peace treaty truly serve the region? And how can the border dispute end once and for all?Prolonged conflictTo understand recent advancements in Ethiopia-Eritrea relations, one must understand the history behind their long-lasting dispute. In 1882, Italy began establishing settlements on Eritrean land, forming what was known as “Italian Eritrea” by 1890. At the same time, their neighbor Ethiopia agreed to give up some land to Italy, in...

Scandinavia: The secret of happiness!
There are people who are happy and there are people with a sad story of never-ending love. In the latest global poll rating the quality of life and happiness of the people in the world, Norwegians earned the title of the happiest people in the world. This was not a great surprise to anyone, as that title is likely to be traded back and forth among the people of Scandinavia: Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. These people have transformed their “happy culture” with its distinctive marks and features into a methodology for others to benefit from. The culture of happiness in Denmark is called “Hygge”. It is derived from the word “hug”, which means “bosom” in English. It is a culture that embraces the beautiful moments of life and the need to enjoy them to the maximum extent,...
