When losing a brother
Last week was a sad one for me because of the demise of my brother Abdullah after battling with illness for several years. For me, he was more than a brother; he was a good friend and a real mentor. Abdullah and our other brother Saeed, who is older than him, played the role of a father after the demise of our father. The rest of my brothers and me were children when our father died.My brother Saeed, supported by Abdullah, shouldered the responsibility of the custodianship of their young siblings. Both of them stood by our late mother in taking care of the family. During those difficult times, the family did not have any sources of fixed income. Hence, the family had to rely on the meager revenues received from the small farm that we inherited from our parents. This financial condition...

The semi-skilled conundrum
There was a time when one-third of our total population was comprised of expatriate workers, the bulk of whom fell into the semi-skilled category. They filled a niche that was not attractive to many Saudis seeking employment. And while the numbers have reduced in recent years, they are still in the millions. Just who are they? You see them often when driving. Silently they toil on the sides of streets and roads often in the heat of the day picking up litter that motorists so generously provide by flinging it out of their racing vehicles.Or you can see them perched precariously on high rises under construction, taking risks we would not dare to contemplate. There are moments when you encounter an army of them busily preparing a road for resurfacing. Or you run into them in restaurants as...

The lack of safety measures on mountain roads
OkazDuring the recent heavy rains, road accidents have been featured on social media. The collapse of concrete dams, tunnels that have partly collapsed and rocks falling on roads in the mountains have been subjects of discussions. Roads are dangerous during and after the rain.Once the construction work on roads is completed, it is the responsibility of the concerned authorities to provide proper road maintenance so that accidents do not take place. Most mountain roads need continuous maintenance. Failure to maintain these roads and to eliminate danger before it happens is a great negligence of responsibility. Those responsible for such negligence must be held accountable. There is no excuse for the lack of safety measures in areas where rocks are falling on the road. There are many mountain...

Time to review residency regulations
The new Minister of Labor and Social Development, Ahmed Bin Sulaiman Al-Rajhi, told a gathering of concerned business people that soon they would hear good news about the labor system. The rumor machine gave us extra details. Worker fees would not be increased above SR 400 a month as per regulations introduced in 2017. An expat would no longer pay fees for every member of his family that would increase every year until 2020. Instead, only male children above the age of 18 would have to either change their status to worker or stay under their parent’s sponsorship. They would pay SR 400 monthly fees, either way. This requirement would not include female children. The expat community breathed a sigh of relief with this news. So did the business community and real estate owners.Unfortunately,...

Ending the Qatar crisis
Okaz newspaper The four countries boycotting Qatar have stressed the need for the Gulf country to comply with their demands and conditions. However, the Qatari regime has done nothing but the opposite, providing further proof that the boycott of Qatar was a wise decision.Qatar has conducted a secret war against the four boycotting countries in the international arena in an attempt to defame their reputation and mobilize international human rights organizations and media against them. Qatari media outlets, led by Al-Jazeera, have continued a vicious campaign against the four countries and their interests.Meanwhile, the four boycotting countries have done nothing except to close the door from one side to prevent the Qatari harm from reaching them, without attempting to target the interests...

Britain after Brexit: Plan B!
The repercussions of the results of the British referendum to exit from the European Union, known as “Brexit”, are ongoing and have not stopped. This was very clear when British Prime Minister Theresa May announced recently that she and her administration have reached a final agreement on the EU exit plan. Only hours after the prime minister’s announcement, the pound quickly collapsed, a significant number of ministers resigned, and concerns hit the real estate sector, one of the most important pillars of the British economy. With the inevitable departure from the European Union, Britain is now looking to revitalize the Commonwealth system, which consists of its former colonies and extends across the globe from Malaysia and India to Kenya and Nigeria through Australia, Canada and many...

The importance of happiness in the workplace
Okaz newspaperIn some private sector businesses, employees are asked to give up their dignity and self-respect in order to deal with the anger and bad temper of the company’s clients. This has a negative impact on the psychological state of employees and on the level of their productivity. Many employees in such a situation soon learn to hate work and would prefer to stay home, except for the fact that they need the job. Such employees do not find any enjoyment in their work. However, many businesses do not care about the psychological aspects of their employees, despite its importance in the success of the business. If the level of productivity of an employee drops because of psychological pressure, then the company will replace that employee with another one, who in future will most...

In Azov Sea, Putin plays a deadly Ukraine game
ReutersWhen Vladimir Putin opened a new bridge linking Crimea to the rest of Russia across the Azov Sea in May, Russian officials said it was intended to integrate the disputed peninsula - seized by Moscow from Ukraine in 2014 - into Russia’s transport infrastructure. By limiting ships transiting the Kerch Strait beneath the giant central span of the bridge, however, it also gave the Kremlin the ability to control maritime access to an area of water roughly the size of Switzerland. On Sunday, Moscow turned the key in that door by using a cargo ship to block entry to the Azov Sea. As warplanes and combat helicopters flew overhead, Russian border patrol boats seized three Ukrainian naval ships after opening fire on them and wounding several sailors. On Monday, Russia’s FSB security...

Know the pill you’re about to pop
Recently a study by one of the Kingdom’s leading universities highlighted the growing number of patients seeking psychiatrist help, and how business was booming for those prescribing the magic pills. The report cautioned that the findings were somewhat tentative, as no previous in-depth study had been undertaken to determine the proportion of people suffering from some kind of mental disorder. The report also suggested that regional developments and uncertainties may have led many to a life of anxiety and depression. On reading the report, I felt that it failed to address the remedial actions that should be taken by those in the medical profession who must deal with such mental anguish. While there are psychiatrists, there seems to be little in the way of local therapeutic help, or...
