Review the process for recruiting domestic workers
Al-Madinah newspaperI call upon the Minister of Labor and Social Development, Ahmad Bin Suleiman Al-Rajhi, to review the issue of recruitment companies. These companies have grown wealthy at the expense of simple people who are forced to deal with them in order to recruit domestic help the legal way. Who would believe that a citizen would have to pay these recruitment companies SR9,600 in advance in order to sign a contract with a domestic worker?Recruitment companies are supposed to be the perfect solution that will motivate citizens to adhere to rules and regulations and to dissuade them from dealing with illegal housemaids. However, these companies have actually proved to be nothing but a burden added to the other economic burdens of Saudi families.I am confident that the minister, who...

Expect 2019 to test global stability
The resignation of US Defense Secretary James Mattis stands not only as a radical disassociation from the actions of the president he served, but as a foreboding for the future, a warning for 2019 - and beyond. And, for all the assurances that the world is getting better, such as Steven Pinker’s “Enlightenment Now,” there are huge geopolitical challenges to face and master to make that optimism real. The key passages of Mattis’ resignation letter include statements asserting that the United States cannot protect its interests or effectively serve its role as “the indispensable nation in the free world” without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to its allies. “We must use all tools of American power to provide for the common defense, including providing effective...

Expats should spend their money in the Kingdom
Al-RiyadAt the end of the third quarter of this year 8,847,478 workers, Saudis and non-Saudis, were registered with social insurance. Of the total number, non-Saudis represented 7,128,654 individuals (80.5 percent) and Saudis 1,718,824 (19.5 percent). Apart from this there were nearly two million male and female domestic workers. Also we have to add the number of people who were arrested in recent police campaigns against illegal residents. It is estimated that around two million violators were detained. We consider expats working in this country to be our partners in development and we need them to help build our country. Our main focus is on illegal residents and those who are violating and damaging the economy by conducting secret economic activities. The fees that were imposed on the...

Wa’ad El-Shamal: The capital of global phosphate
In January 2014, a number of government ministers gathered in a desert tent near Tarif Governorate, one of Saudi Arabia’s northern border governorates. The purpose of this meeting was to sign contracts in order to build an industrial complex around a phosphate mine, and a new rail link to a port on the Arabian Gulf, with total investment of more than SR36 billion. This followed the discovery that the northern border area contains seven percent of the world’s phosphate reserves, especially in the regions of Al-Jalamid and Um W’al between Ar’ar and Tarif. The project has given rise to an integrated mining city known as Wa’ad El-Shamal for Mining. In 2017, the first shipment of phosphate fertilizers, estimated at 26,000 tons, was exported via the North Railway to Ras Al-Khair port on...

The biggest losers in the fall of Dhaka
The state of Pakistan was founded after great struggle and huge sacrifices made by the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent. After Mughal rule was weakened and Britain conquered the subcontinent, Muslims and Hindus staged a revolt in 1857 under the leadership of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II, but Britain crushed the rebellion and held the Muslims responsible for it. Subsequently, the British deported many Muslims and approached Hindus, who in turn favorably responded to their wishes and came forward to learn their language. On the other hand, Muslims withdrew within themselves, stayed away from power and to a great extent from the new rulers and their language of English. This prompted some enlightened Muslims to wage a struggle for the uplift of the community on several...

Will Saudi Arabia achieve self-sufficiency in weapons production?
Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest importers of weapons, is shifting to manufacturing armaments with the goal of localizing over 50 percent of its military spending by 2030. Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman declared that the Ministry of Defense or other security and military bodies should make deals with foreign bodies only if they are linked to local industry. The military strength of Saudi Arabia continues to grow, as the Kingdom is ranked 26 out of 136 countries worldwide according to the annual Global Firepower (GFP) list for 2018. Saudi Arabia focuses on four main defense categories: aeronautics, land systems, defense electronics and weapons and missiles. That covers all aspects of homeland security from weapons to research and development in all modern aspects of...

The lack of conscience of the greedy
Al-MadinahLast week, Egyptian media carried news of the arrest of a well-known butcher in Al-Faiyum who was selling donkey meat to people. He was also supplying donkey meat to five-star hotels in Cairo claiming that it was goat meat. From Cairo we go to Morocco where police arrested a gang that was selling dog meat and the meat of dead animals. Then here in Saudi Arabia, newspapers recently published news of a supervisory committee seizing hundreds of tons of rotten meat and fish in different areas and provinces in the Kingdom, including Riyadh, Makkah, Jeddah and Al-Khobar. Of course, we are not counting the rotten products that the supervisory committee failed to find. However, although this meat is rotten, the conscience of those selling, marketing and distributing it is even more...

Jews with a conscience
Palestinians have been on the wrong end of a Zionist-fueled holocaust that has been designed to remove them from their land. Some 68 years ago, Palestinians were forcibly dispossessed of their lands often through violent means resulting in a catastrophic cycle that has led to the execution of a relentless and ongoing holocaust on the Palestinian people. In recent years, violence has been upped several notches with daylight executions in cold blood of innocent civilians by Israeli forces, especially in Gaza.It is not just the brutal aggression against the civilian population that is distressing. It is coupled with persistent humanitarian woes and humiliating measures aimed at breaking the spirit of resistance. Today, the American NGO, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), has raised another alarm...

Protect women in the workplace
Okaz newspaperI recently read in Makkah newspaper that the Minister of Labor and Social Development has approved a charter to combat harassment at work, especially at his ministry. The charter consists of 12 articles, including banning all male and female ministry employees from meeting together in private. In cases where male and female employees must meet for work-related reasons, the door of the meeting room must be kept open. The charter also mentioned that in any meeting a proper space must be maintained between employees of the opposite gender and they must never talk about personal matters that are not related to work.I would like to thank the minister for taking this step. I believe that this charter should not be limited to the staff of the ministry, but should be applied to all...

Treatment of guest workers!
An old Saudi man went around the Riyadh Metro worksites distributing bottles of cold water to workers. I found out that he did this every day, especially during the hot summer.A worker cleaned the streets under the scorching sun in Jeddah. He typically chose intersections, near traffic lights. A young man opened his window and gave him a bottle of water. A woman handed him a sandwich. We see more acts of charity during the holy seasons, such as Ramadan and Haj. Street workers receive the most attention and help. All of that help must be appreciated. These workers probably are in need of food and water. But what I believe they really need most is cash. A man in their profession gets an average of SR 350 a month, plus a little food, poor accommodation and less than adequate medical...
