At what price a PhD degree?
A video clip making the rounds on social media highlights the disparity in the ratio of PhDs among the members of the Shoura councils of GCC countries. It even notes the numbers of PhDs in the US Senate and House of Representative. Saudi Arabia has by far the largest proportion of PhDs among the lawmakers, with some 100 members of the Shoura Council holding PhDs according to the clip. If that is indeed true, then is it perhaps not overkill? And does it not encourage those who want to obtain such a degree to look for an easy option? A finding of the Ministry of Higher Education identified 110 offices selling forged degrees from non-Saudi universities. The agencies had been supplying these bogus degrees for several years, and the recent finding was just the tip of the iceberg. The degrees...

Canada: The blessings, and pitfalls, of democracy in action
Canada is a diverse country with its Aboriginal people (who themselves are divided into different tribes), French and British founding nations and immigrants from all over the world, who have flocked to this cold country in search of a better life and have done well. Today all Canadians are equal in the eyes of the law and almost all of them enjoy full human rights.Given the vastness of the land - it is the world’s second largest country in terms of area - and the diversity of its peoples, democracy here seems to work somewhat erratically. But it does work and that helps to make Canada a model country, where people differ on policies but also make compromises in order to maintain the country’s unity and stability. There was a time when Canadian immigration policy was based on race and...

New world order?
There seems to be a new world order being formed these days that is an alternative to that which arose after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The most important feature of this new order is Brexit, which was developed in decision-making centers of major British universities to prepare the British public to focus on the harm of staying in the European market.Brexit proponents highlight the fact that while America recovered from the global financial crisis relatively quickly, Europe continues to suffer from it due to bureaucratic complexities and conflicts of fiscal policy that have damaged Britain’s strong economy.Another issue emphasized by those who want Britain to leave Europe is the enormous damage caused by the migration of European labor to the British market, which has contributed to...

Quick with the prescriptions
An article that appeared recently in one of the local papers went to great lengths to highlight the growing number of patients seeking psychiatrist help and how business was booming for those prescribing the magic pills. The article implied that regional developments and uncertainties have led many to a life of anxiety and depression. What I felt the article failed to focus on were the remedial actions of those in the medical profession who are tasked with dealing with such mental anguish. In some hospitals, especially private ones, there seems to be a lack of qualified and local therapeutic help or psychiatric treatment based on a concentrated study of the patient’s medical and social background. In some hospitals, it is not uncommon to find patients waiting dolefully for their monthly...

Can protests in Lebanon destroy Hezbollah state?
THE protests which have engulfed all regions in Lebanon represent an unprecedented event in the country’s history not because they have never occurred before but because they have drawn fresh patriotic lines to end the Iranian designs of hegemony in Lebanon. The demonstrators who took to the streets without any political or sectarian color have broken the barrier of silence against sectarianism which has, for several decades, prevented Lebanon from achieving a perfect social harmony and national integration. All the slogans raised by angry protesters — all means all — did not spare any political or sectarian leader. Prior to the recent protests, any attempt to criticize or lampoon Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia, was considered a red line and which...

Say no to energy-boosting drinks
ALTHOUGH energy drinks have been around since the mid-eighties, the structure of their target audience has gradually shifted to the young. Through clever marketing and branding with youth activities, most of these body-boosting drink companies are making themselves part of a daily diet of many young Saudis and expatriates. They are found in the drinks sections of supermarkets and mini markets everywhere; most come with exotic names and in eye-catching containers. But are these drinks which are primarily targeted towards our youth harmful in the long run? Should parents and schools not sit up and take notice.Take the case of one such popular energy drink sold in our supermarkets and consumed on a daily basis by many of our young. It could be fatal. It was initially created to stimulate the...

The oil magician!
WHEN the history of oil and its impact on the world's economy is reviewed, important milestones need to be considered. While oil was first discovered in China in 600 BC, the history of oil shaping economy began in North America, specifically in Canada, Ontario, in 1858.But oil became a serious industry when oil was discovered in America, Pennsylvania in 1859, and that in commercial quantities. The US and European giants began exploring prospecting opportunities, giving birth to BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Standard Oil, Texaco, Mobil and Exxon. Gradually, oil has become the most important economic commodity that harnesses political action around the world. For a long time, the commodity was driven by the rules of market economies based on supply and demand. This situation continued until the...

The call to be proactive
A few years ago, a fire quickly raged through one of Jeddah’s schools killing two teachers. The regional governor, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, stated that he “received the news of the fire while I was inside the governorate in Makkah attending a meeting. I rushed immediately to Jeddah to see the incident for myself.”More recently, the main terminal of the Al Haramain train at Jeddah was consumed by another fire that rendered the station inoperable. Although the loss of lives was minimal in both situations, the fact is that even one lost life should be enough to wake up the relevant authorities over the need to be more proactive.Today there are thousands of schools in the various regions of this country, some in a very dilapidated state, that need a closer inspection in terms of fire...

Lebanon between two projects!
Followers of the popular movement in Lebanon know who the enemies of the country are. It is the same team that kidnapped the civilian state at gunpoint, the same team that pledged allegiance to a non-Lebanese imam and leader and declared its absolute loyalty to him.It is the same team that distributed pictures of non-Lebanese figures and flags that you see outside Rafik Hariri International Airport, as if this were a sign of the death of Hariri’s national nonsectarian project and the end of Lebanese independence as Iranian sectarian domination returns the country to a black and ignorant era. This is responsible for social fragmentation, violent economic recession, deterioration of the value of the national currency, rampant unemployment, uncontrolled inflation, lack of investment, arms...
