Jeddah Municipality falls short of expectations
A few months ago, I was grounded at home for a couple of weeks or so here in Jeddah, nursing an annoying head cold and a host of other allergies. And as I fumed with frustration, I knew what the causes of all my maladies were. Some time ago construction activity started on a plot just north of my dwelling. Large excavators and shovels removed earth to prepare for the foundation and piled the removed dirt and debris that was about three meters high and a football field wide adjacent to the land where I lived. And then the equipment disappeared. My efforts to locate them have been futile, as nobody showed up after that initial activity. Nor was there any sign posted by the developer or the construction outfit. As the wind blew, so did the top layer of this hill, and right into my family room...

Will Pakistan and India reach an agreement over Kashmir?
The dispute between Pakistan and India over Kashmir dates back to the time of the partition of the subcontinent between the two countries on the basis of the so-called “Two-Nation” theory. This theory stipulated that the predominantly Muslim majority regions would be part of the new state of Pakistan while the Hindu-majority regions would continue to remain part of India, but what happened in the case of Kashmir was quite a different story. The ruler of Kashmir was a Hindu while the majority of people were Muslims. Therefore, the Two-Nation theory was not implemented in Kashmir. Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of Kashmir, wanted his princely state to remain semi-independent and therefore sought the Indian government’s protection. But India did not fully agree to his request and put...

Open the doors of life
OkazCrown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman said in one of his meetings that the memories of many Saudis are primarily from outside the country. It was necessary, he said, for memories to be formed in the country. The truth is that many people have been traveling outside the country to enjoy their vacations. Many of us have considered the annual vacation as a time for tourism abroad and a time to enjoy the pleasures of life. Many Saudis travel to different capitals of the world to enjoy their annual vacation in a search for entertainment and shopping without harassment, etc. Now, however, you see Saudis here in the Kingdom having fun all week enjoying various kinds of entertainment. A friend of mine swears that he feels like he is outside of Saudi Arabia due to the wide range of entertainment now...

No more excuses for Brazilian miners
Opencast mines are awesome in the way that explosives, massive high-pressure water jets and huge machines are used to tear away whole mountains to extract iron, coal or other minerals. For every ton of ore produced, much larger quantities of unwanted earth and wastewater are moved off the site into huge cofferdams. It was one such dam in southeastern Brazil which collapsed this January sending a tsunami of mud surging down onto the mining town of Brumadinho. More than 300 people perished. This week the bosses of the giant Brazilian mining company Vale, which owns the mine, have been removed after evidence emerged that management were warned the structure had become unstable. Known as an “upstream” dam, it is actually built of the same waste material, the “tailings”, that it was...

Is the 15th son bloodthirsty?
The 15th son of Al-Qaeda former leader Osama Bin Laden has been dealt three painful blows in the past few days. The US State Department has offered one million dollars as reward for any information on Hamza Bin Laden’s whereabouts, the United Nations has named him a global dangerous terrorist, and the Saudi Arabian Official Gazette Umm Al-Qura announced last Friday that he has been stripped of his Saudi citizenship. Apparently, all three parties share the same viewpoint when it comes to Hamza’s role in the international terrorist organization, which he, as it seems, will lead, following in the footsteps of his father. The UN’s Daesh and Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee has added the name of Hamza Osama Bin Laden, born in Jeddah on May 9, 1989, to the list of individuals subject to its...

Beggars may pose a threat to society
Al-YaumIn a recent visit to the central market in Dammam, I saw some women walking among the men in the market begging. These women, who were not badly dressed and did not look as if they were in need of help, were begging in both the vegetable and fish sections of the market. The strange thing was that the Asian workers who were selling fish gave them money as a charity or provided them some of the fish that the Saudi customers did not buy. It was strange to see women dressed as Saudis receiving charity from average workers. What happened in the fish market was also repeated in the vegetable market, with a slight change which was that those women just begged from Saudi shoppers. It is not my right to demand the arrest of those women, and I’m not interested in targeting the livelihood of...

Yemen: Light at the end of the tunnel!
With all the games the Houthi are playing to dismantle the Sweden Agreement, hopes are dashed with every rebel violation and with motor attacks on civilians and government-controlled areas. Still, I am hopeful.Yes, it is never easy to win a war in Yemen. For a decade, Nasser’s Egypt supported a military coup against the 1,000-year-old Zaidi Kingdom. In 1961, when the Egyptians went in, they thought it was a “mission possible.” It took them eight years to realize their mistake. Up to 70,000 well-trained soldiers, with modern equipment, were unable to defeat mountainous tribes with no more than old rifles and knives. The invader, this time, is Iran. The Arab Coalition is backing the legitimate Yemeni government against a foreign-led rebellion. That was what Saudi Arabia did when it...

The international community is failing Bangladesh and the Rohingya
It is hard to blame the Bangladeshi government for losing patience with the international community. At the weekend it said that it would no longer take in Rohingya refugees fleeing ethnic cleansing from across the border in Myanmar’s Rakhine province.Bangladesh is currently giving generous and much needed shelter to almost three quarters of a million Muslim Rohingya. These people have been driven from their homes by racist Buddhist fanatics with the clear connivance of the Myanmar military and most egregiously, under the indulgent gaze of 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi. At the end of this month, she will celebrate three years as effective leader. In January 2018, Dhaka cut a deal with the Myanmar government for the return of 1,500 Rohingya each week with the idea all...

The lie about low-calorie food
Al-JazirahStarting this year restaurants and cafes will face a financial penalty if they do not make clear the number of calories of each item on their menus. The question is: What is the criterion that these restaurants and cafes use to count calories? Are the calories in all local meals and drinks being calculated correctly? In my opinion, this matter requires further explanation from the concerned authorities. The world is discovering day by day that diet supplements and low-calorie food are a scam and a marketing technique used by some companies. The latest scandal is that a medical college in New York has announced that a diet soda with zero sugar and calories increases the risk of stroke by 25 percent and heart disease by 30 percent. This is just one study on one product from an...
