Corruption sinks ferry
The Mosul ferry disaster on Iraq’s Tigris river, in which at least 120 perished and dozens more are still missing, is an awful tragedy for a city that in recent years has seen more than its fair share of catastrophes. The public fury over the sinking of the overloaded ferry before it reached a popular holiday island was very real. Some distraught survivors lost most members of their families when the overcrowded boat capsized. The death toll was undoubtedly greater because the vessel lacked life jackets and adequate lifeboats. The primary responsibility for this terrible tragedy undoubtedly rests with the ferry operators. They had been warned the Mosul Dam upstream had been opened to let out excess water. The level of the Tigris along with the extra speed of its current had, therefore,...

KHALID AL-SULIMAN
Marriage registrar under investigation
OkazOkaz daily recently reported that the Minister of Justice ordered the Department of Marriage Registrars not to complete the marriage procedures of an underage girl in Asir. The minister ordered an investigation in the case and summoned the marriage registrar who solemnized the marriage ceremonies in flagrant violation of the Child Protection Law.I would like to thank the minister for rescuing this girl because underage marriages should be stopped even if a girl expresses her consent to such a marriage. This is unacceptable as a girl who has not reached the age of adulthood is not capable of making the right decision when it comes to marriage. Usually, such marriages are doomed to fail and many have. Some marriages end up with both spouses going their separate ways.Strikingly, section...

Media and crisis: The New Zealand model!
Media lessons never end, especially, in the New Media age. It used to be a much simpler world. If you needed to inform the public on an important matter, you could produce a TV broadcast, send a press release or call for a press conference. People would get the message loud and clear. What about a crisis? Set up a press center to feed the media, around the clock. You could speak directly to your audience in gatherings - town halls, public events and organized meetings. The press would always be there to cover and relay the news to a wider audience. That seems like ages ago, when channels of communication with the public were numbered, predictable and managed. You dealt with them through traditional channels - editors, journalists and management. They knew you, you knew them, and everyone had...

Trump triumphant
To the utter dismay of the US liberal establishment, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s much-anticipated investigation has failed to find any evidence that Moscow conspired to help him win the 2016 election. However, Trump-haters are drawing as much consolation as they can from Mueller’s further finding that he could not be sure if the president had sought to obstruct justice. All this became evident in a four-page summary of the Special Counsel’s report that Attorney General William Barr delivered to Congress. Trump’s enemies are now demanding that Barr should release the entire report, without any redactions. The administration will almost certainly argue that the contents are protected by executive privilege. There is, however, a strong case for putting the entire document in the...

Expat accountants and pharmacists
Al-RiyadhIT is difficult to track down professions where the Saudization ratio is below the target for reasons that I am not aware of, or have not yet been made public by the authorities. For example, there are 120,000 expatriates who work in the Kingdom as accountants. Therefore, the accountant’s profession can be classed as a category having a lot of vacant positions available for Saudi job seekers. The important question here is: Are there any Saudis with accounting majors who cannot find jobs? I did not find any statistics regarding this matter, especially for the private sector. We need to have complete data on Saudi accountancy graduates. How many of them are there? Where do they work? Are they all employed? If they were not employed, which means there is unemployment in the field,...

Death live on social media
OkazThe terrible massacre in New Zealand resulted in the death of 50 people and many others injured, all of whom were Muslims who were inside a mosque waiting for Friday prayer. Since the crime took place, media reports have commented on it and on how it happened. This is a terrible crime that is painful to us as Muslims, as it specifically targeted believers in Islam. It shows that humanity is in danger. Killing a peaceful person, no matter what his color or creed is a crime against humanity. It is dangerous when a person who has a natural tendency to violence finds himself in an environment that feeds on extremism and hatred toward others. The criminal who committed this massacre is a product of a right-wing ideology that preaches hatred toward anyone of a different race or religion. This...

Terror reaches New Zealand!
Terror has struck New Zealand, one of the quietest and most peaceful parts of the world. The victims were Muslims praying in mosques, and the accused is a right-wing extremist. This is not the first act of terror targeting Muslims, nor is it the first carried out by right-wing extremists. The time has come for the world to seriously confront the threat of right-wing extremism and not to consider it to be merely an “attack by individuals and anomalous groups.”The extremism that we are witnessing today has roots in the past. It was associated with a primarily Christian-Protestant religious movement that produced extremist groups such as the Klan and the Third Reich, which produced Adolf Hitler and Nazism. After the disappearance of Nazism, armed militias appeared in the West calling for...

New Zealand shows America the way
It is only a little over a week since 50 worshippers were gunned down by a lone assailant in two mosques in Christchurch, but much has changed in New Zealand. Friday’s Muslim call to prayer was broadcast across the nation and a two-minute moment of silence was observed. Non-Muslim women were encouraged to wear hijabs to work, school or play on Friday in a show of support for New Zealand’s Muslims. Worshippers have returned to the Al-Noor Mosque, the dead have all been identified and have started to be buried, and some 3,000 people walked through Christchurch in a “march for love” intended to honor the victims. However, just six days after the mosque attacks, the most consequential development was the announcement by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of a complete ban on...

E-commerce and retail trade
Al-MadinaLAST July, the Council of Ministers approved the formation of the Kingdom’s first e-commerce council. The council will recommend policies and legislation related to e-commerce, motivate it and eliminate hurdles before it.This step came as part of the objectives of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which calls for creating an attractive and conducive environment for investors. It is expected that the volume of e-commerce in the country will double to reach SR60 billion in the next five years, especially with the increasing number of Internet users in the Kingdom, which is around 85 percent.E-commerce is now a huge economic activity in the Kingdom. The use of e-stores and other online shopping platforms and applications is spreading in the country. It allows shoppers to see what they...

Golan reversal
President Donald Trump has once again overturned decades of US policy, this time by saying it was time to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967. The first time was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. It is further evidence that the Trump administration is willing to ignore international law, including Security Council resolutions, in order to satisfy Israeli demands. The Golan becoming Israeli territory because Trump says so has no legal justification. As was said after the Jerusalem announcement in December 2017, the US administration recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital did not mean that Jerusalem suddenly became the capital of Israel. So, too, recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory amounts...
