Hating hatred is not enough
Hatred based on race, religion or background is itself hateful. Less than a century ago, still within living memory, the Nazi government of Germany, one of the cradles of European culture, adopted official antisemitism which grew in scope until it ended with the horrors of the gas chambers and the extermination of some six million Jews. The Vichy government of a defeated high-culture France also connived in the Nazis’ abhorrent genocide. Now, thanks to the unscrupulous and amoral maneuverings of far-right politicians, Europe is gripped by a new phobia, which is directed against European Muslim citizens and over a million migrants from predominantly Muslim war-torn countries who have sought refuge there. A by-product of this fresh eruption of corrosive contempt which is Islamophobia is...

A corrosive soup of inaccuracy
Devoted users of social media sites regularly enthuse over their benefits. Less attention is paid to the downsides, perhaps the greatest of which is the severely limited attention span these media seem to encourage. Content is scribbled down with little forethought and even less revision before the Send button is hit. Hardly worse is that these often ill-informed and deeply inaccurate messages are read rapidly by others, who then immediately forward them to their “friends”.There are certainly organizations out there deliberately creating Fake News. However, their success depends on the gullibility and general ignorance of a great mass of users who will perpetuate and spread these falsehoods. There have been two mass shootings in the United States this week. As we have already written,...

Saudi women regain their rights
Thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince, the usurped rights of women have been restored. These are rights that no rational person can deny; rights to education, driving and travel that were taken away from Saudi women in the past. There are evil forces that target this country. They do not want this country to move forward. They do not want good or prosperity for the Kingdom. These evil forces were intent on destroying half of our society. The Saudi woman for them had the right to go out twice in her entire life: once to her husband’s home and the second time to her grave. These forces are cruel and unjust. They have morally killed the Saudi woman. Instead of burying her when she was just a child, they killed her every day, buried her in the dark, made her...

Yet more blood flows during Afghan peace talks
THE chilling reality appears to be that while the Taliban is in peace talks with the US in Qatar, it is making clear it is negotiating from a position of strength. Thus even as its delegates sat across the table from American representatives, a car bomb smashed into a Kabul police station, killing 14 and maiming some 150 more.Though the Taliban proudly claimed the attack was directed against the government security forces, the tragic reality, as in so much of this seemingly endless conflict, is that the majority of victims were civilians, ordinary people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.President Trump’s special representative for Afghanistan had just boasted that “excellent progress” had been made at weekend talks in Doha. He looked forward to the continued...

Kashmir is under attack
THE current Indian government has acted swiftly and against all international norms, beginning with the use of cluster bombs against the civilian population of Kashmir, and has followed it by an invasion of 10,000 more troops to bolster the existing ones there. To protect itself from censure and prevent ground realities from escaping the killing zones, it has cut off all internet and other means of communication in the region. It has also unilaterally abrogated decades-long agreements that were in place to ensure that the Kashmiris would one day have their say on self-determination.This vicious attack by the Modi government, which has increasingly been exposed for its radical and extremist Hindutva approach to make India a place for Hindus, is alarming, not just for the minorities who live...

Sri Lanka’s Muslims
THE numbers are currently relatively small but the significance of the crisis of Muslim refugees in Sri Lanka is considerable. In the wake of the April terrorist outrage in which 250 were butchered by a group of bigots linked to Daesh (the self-proclaimed IS) there was an immediate backlash against the country’s Muslim community, who make up around ten percent of the population.Despite government appeals for calm, hardliners from the country’s Buddhist majority launched attacks of Muslim-owned businesses and properties. Mobs pressured Buddhist landlords to throw Muslim tenants out of their homes and places of work. Muslim workers were also fired, in contravention of the country’s employment laws. So far more than a thousand Muslims have become internal refugees. Some of them were...

A dangerous blunder
INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi decision to strip Indian-occupied Kashmir of its special status is perilous. After Indian forces seized part of Jammu and Kashmir following the 1947 Partition, in 1949 India’s leader Jawaharlal Nehru saw through an amendment to the new country’s constitution. Article 370 allowed Jammu and Kashmir to have its own constitution, a separate flag and control of it own affairs save foreign policy, defense and communications. Nehru was more popularly known as ‘Pandit’ a reference to his family’s membership of the Kashmiri Pandit community.Since its formation in 1980, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP) has always opposed Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The platform on which Modi won his landslide victory this May, included a...

Erdogan: Illusion seller
It is only natural that Recep Tayyib Erdogan will reap the bitter harvest of his rash policies that have reduced his popularity to such an extent that his party (Justice and Development) lost the Istanbul mayoralty elections. It was the Istanbul city council that elevated Erdogan to the premiership and then to the presidency. This electoral loss has resulted in a division of his closest allies in the party especially the former president Abdullah Gul, the ex-prime minister Ahmed Dawood Oglu and the former deputy prime minister Ali Babacan.Erdogan and his Muslim Brotherhood media have launched a massive campaign against the Saudi leadership for the death of our colleague Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. As a result of these attacks, the number of Saudi tourists to Turkey this year has dropped...

Space 50 years from now!
The Western world in general and the United States in particular recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the landing of the first man on the Moon. Americans considered this 1969 event to be an important victory over the Soviet camp, which at the time was ahead of them in the space race. The Soviets launched the first spacecraft, put the first living creature, a dog, into space followed by the first man and then the first woman as well, all of which led to American confusion and astonishment. In 1961, when John Kennedy succeeded Dwight Eisenhower as president, he stated his vision for American space exploration in simple terms. He said that in a decade America would land the first person on the Moon, setting the target and the timeframe. Kennedy did not live to witness his dream come...

GEA and humanizing society
The General Entertainment Authority plays a vital and essential role in the community, restoring life and joy to people, contributing to improving the quality of life, and strengthening family ties all of which are necessary for society. There is no doubt that this will face resistance from some extremists who have been brainwashed.Humanism is a general intellectual trend that emerged in Italy in the European Renaissance. This trend changed all aspects of Western life. It stopped men from paying blind obedience to the clergy, freed them from their powers, and supported trust in man and his nature.Economic prosperity, progress, and development are linked to the humanization of society and its movement away from myths and illusions. Humanization has become a science in itself, and the science...
